Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday Dr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.wasbornJanuary15th,1929inAtlanta,Georgia.Kingbecameapivotalfigureinthecivilrightsmovementofthelate1950sand1960s.Hewasarrested30timesforhisparticipationincivilrightsactivities.Hespearheadedmanypeacefuldemonstrations.ThemostmemorablerallywasheldAugust28,1963inWashington,D.C.,whenhedeliveredthefamous“IHaveaDream”speech.Thefollowingyear,KingwasselectedasTimemagazine’sManoftheYearandreceivedtheNobelPeacePrize.HewasassassinatedApril4th,1968,inMemphis,Tennessee.Effortsbeganjustdaysafterhisdeathtodeclarehisbirthdayaholiday,butitwasnotuntilJanuary20th,1986thatthedaywasobservednationwide.

“Weep no more my lady” Thistimeofyearoftenbringsremindersofourmortalityandgriefandloss.Aftertheholidayslifeatthelongtermcarecenterfrequentlygetsintoarutormonotonythatishardonboththeresidentsandthefamily.ButwiththeholidayseasonsoverandtheNewYearuponusletusevaluatehowmuchourfamilymembershavebroughttous.Thoughtheirmindsandbodiesarenotwhattheyoncewere,yettheyaretheoneswhooftenworkedandlaughedandwentonvacationsandpickedusupafterschool.Theytaughtusmuch,notjustbywhattheysaidanddidbutalsobywhotheywere.Theyhelpedusdealwithourfearsandhelpeduslearntogetalongwithoursiblingsorfriendsorenemies.Theycriedwithusoveraskinnedkneeorbadgradeorlostlove.Thesearethememoriesourresidentswouldwantustohaveandremember. Dementiaisadreadedworkthatmanyofusfaceonadailybasis.Ithascomeintoourhomesandoftenrobbedusoftheoneswelove.Ithastakenawaythecalmorlaughoftheonesweseekthesefrommost.Ithasremovedourfamilymemberfrombeingabletolearnnewthingsorevenrememberhowtodosimplethingslikecutuptheirfoodorevenbringthespoonorforktotheirmouthandchew.Thisdreaddiseasehasbroughtmanypeoplebacktobeinglikeatoddler.Manyofyouhaveseenthesechangesfirsthandandgrieveoverthelossyouandyourfamilyfeel.Wealsogrieveforyouandinmedicinehavetriedtoremovethefearandencourage“qualityoflife”.Buteachofyoumustdefinethatforyourselffromyourmemoriesofyourlovedofyourlovedoneandwhattheywouldwantforthemselvesandfortheirfamily,whichincludesyou. Asthetimemovesoninthishorrificillnessofdementia,otherphysicalchangestakeplace.Yousee,thebrainistheepi-centerofdirectionforalltheotherfunctionsofdailylife.ITsendsthemessagesthatmostofthetimewedon’tevenrealizeisoccurring.Thebrainstartsfailingtoletthebodyknowitishungryorthirstyorevenhowtocheworswallow.Itstopslettingthenormalprotectionsofthebreathingstopthosefewsecondswhileswallowingsalivaorfoodsothelungsareripeforpneumonia.Thebrainstopssendingmessagestothebladderorbowelsandincontinenceoccurs.Itslowsdowntheterminologyhasdevelopedcalled“brainfailure”.Whichdescribesthislossofcontrolfunctionsofhebraininthelaststagesofdementia.Itisoftenaverysadstatewerecomfortmeasuresaretheultimategoalofcare. Wedon’tmeantosaddenanyonebythisarticle,butasallofusmustfacelosssometimeoranother,wejustwanttoencourageeveryonetoremembertheresidentyouloveforallthegoodthingsofthepastandnottheend.RememberwhotheywereandremindthestaffatNHCHealthCarewhoneverknewthemofthosefondmemories.Itwillhelpallofusaswehavetheprivilegeofcaringfortheresidents.Godblesseachoneofyouandwelookforwardtolearningmoreaboutyouandyourfamily.
