AUTO TIPSOF THE MONTH
1. Change the oil and fi lter every 3,000 miles or three months, or per the owner’s manual. Periodic oil and fi lter changes keep your engine clean on the inside.
2. Check the tire pressure at least monthly, including the spare.
3. Schedule a tune-up annually to optimize your car’s performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions.
4. Have the alignment checked at least annually. Potholes and other road conditions, as well as normal wear, can take their toll on your car’s steering and suspension.
5. Inspect the windshield wipers and lights on the car. Lights and wipers play a major role in safe driving, and they are normal wear items that need periodic replacement.
“These preventive maintenance steps will help ensure the reliability and safety of your car, and they’ll also help improve gas mileage

Hey there, I’m Nia and I’m here to do what I do best, observe, talk and advise. Recently I have been thinking about Carnival. Now, usually most human beings consider the season of Christmas to be the greatest time of the year. However in Trinidad and Tobago, as with everything else in our country’s life, we do things a bit differently. Of course, Christmas is widely adored by our nation, as I discussed in my last article, but it is undeniable that no other season receives as much attention in Trinidad and Tobago as Carnival.
Carnival is usually said to begin sometime around February and occasionally very early in the month of March. At least that’s what people fool themselves into thinking. However I know, and now I am telling you that Carnival begins at approximately twelve o’ clock on Boxing Day morning. Just tune into your local radio stations and you’ll see. The excitement of Carnival begins at the hour the anticipation of Christmas fades away. At the end of Christmas day, people begin their preparations for the New Year and for the greatest time of the year in T and T.
Now, before Carnival can really take swing, there’s one thing that many people do at the beginning of each New Year that for some, aids in the preparation for Carnival. Do you know what New Year’s resolutions are? I’m sure you do. We all have them, whether we want to admit it or not. It’s those little promises we make to ourselves at the beginning of each New Year. Usually they comprise of promises like “I’m going to stop biting my nails this year,” (That’s my resolution), or “This year I’m really going to change for the better.” These resolutions can go on and on. However somewhere along the line we break the promises we make to ourselves. All of them…except maybe one.
Weight loss is a resolution that is commonly made and that is usually kept. For the most part it’s simply because people want to look slimmer, or be healthier for the New Year. Many trinbagonians though have a specifi c goal in mind and this goal is with regards to Carnival. It’s no secret that some Carnival costumes are like cute little outfi ts, and for those who enjoy playing in the mas bands there is a desire to look the absolute best in these costumes, and so they make a little more effort for the season.
My Dad says that whether people play mas or not, we should all make an effort to be healthy. Health is apparently his New Year’s resolution as well. So, recently, he and I went to the gym for the fi rst time in our lives and we received some simple tips that are great for people, like ourselves who are now starting off. So, for those of you who would like to loose a bit of weight, whether for Carnival or simply just to be healthy, here are a few tips that may help you in your process.
Number 1: We should all ensure that we engage in activities that we actually enjoy. Exercise does not have to be boring. In fact, one would be greater motivated to keep fi t if, they are genuinely having fun while doing so. Try fi nding a sport that excites you, such as football, basketball or swimming. If per chance, you do not particularly like sports then you can fi nd an activity that would be of interest to you but that also helps you to loose a few pounds. For example, maybe you would like to try bike riding, aerobics, taking a quick jog or even walking. Whatever the activity is, just be sure that you do it consistently and for a reasonable length of time. I would recommend that you try to exercise three times a week for at least half an hour. Finding an activity that you enjoy also helps you not to be so focused on fi nishing fast, because you are having fun.
Number 2:Commitment, Commitment, Commitment. Did I repeat it too many times? That is because this is where people generally begin to falter a bit. For those of you who have exercise as your New Year resolution, and also for those who are exercising with the season of Carnival in mind, this one is for you. We usually start off ready and raring to go. This is a general human tendency. Anything new gets our undivided attention and then it slowly begins to fade away. So, when it comes to exercise we keep up the stamina until about the end of March and then…something happens.
To avoid loosing the momentum, create a schedule, just for exercise and stick to it. Treat this schedule just as you would treat school or work. Think of it as an inevitable part of your life. Would you ever skip school or work because you feel a little tired? As much as we all want to, most times we don’t because we know how important it is. Treat exercise with this level of commitment. Treat it as an unavoidable part of your life. Something you can never really stop doing because it is important for your health.
Number 3:Mix and match. Doing the same activity every time you exercise can get rather boring unless you really enjoy doing it. Therefore commit different days to different activities. What causes some people to stop exercising after a while is because they think it is too monotonous and so sub-consciously their commitment fades
away. To avoid this, by all means please mix and match it up. One day you can do running, another day, you can swim or play a sport of some kind. Mix up the activity so that your interest stays.
Number 4: Always warm up and cool down. This is extremely important. Even though you may be excited to get started, please do not dash out of your house at 100 miles per hour. Why? Because you’ll crash by the time you reach the end of your street, especially if you are now getting started or restarting with exercising. Begin each session by warming up your muscles. Be sure to stretch your abdominals, your thighs, calves and arms. Also stretch the muscles in your neck by rotating it, fi rst clockwise and then anti-clockwise. After you have stretched then you can begin to exercise. If you are doing activities such as swimming or running, it is best to start off slowly and then begin to gain momentum from there. After you have exercised for at least half an hour, then you can tone down by stretching again.
Number 5: Exercise is a great energizer. When we return home at the end of a long day, exercise is the last thing on our minds. We’re tired, hungry and we just want to lay down on the bed and sleep. Do you know that the best time to exercise is at that moment? You will be pleasantly surprised at how energized you feel after a quick jog in your neighborhood or a walk around the park. Exercise is also a great stress reliever and has also been known to improve your focus during the day.
So for this year, if weight loss is your New Year resolution whether for the season of Carnival or just the desire to be healthy please ensure that you commit to it. Commitment is the most important because with commitment you receive results. Ensure that you are doing an activity that you enjoy, exercise even when you feel tired and warm up and cool down so that your muscles are relaxed before and after your session. With these simple tips exercising should be easy and by the end of the year we should all be healthier.

“I want to be the
President”
What do you think about when you hear,
Black History? Do you think about the trials
and tribulations that happened to some of
our well loved ancestors? Or do you think
about the past successes that seemed to
be a once in a lifetime experience. Perhaps
you think about the great warriors of our
past who fought for freedom and equality
in a world where the colour of one’s skin,
determined the respect with which one was
treated. Whatever your thoughts are on
Black history, I am guessing you thought
it was all… history. However as you may
well be aware we are currently living in the
making of history. On the 20th January 2009,
the United States of America inaugurated its
very fi rst African American President. He is
now known as President Barack Obama.
This did not occur by chance. His selection
has been a long journey that began, not
20 months ago, or even 20 years ago. The
journey began when blacks in the Western
World decided that they too, had dreams.
“So Rosa sat down so that Martin could march,
Martin marched so that Obama could run and
Obama ran so that our children can fl y.” This
is a recent quote, currently circulated, that
sums up the history of African Americans.
However, President Barack Obama has not
only paved a way for African Americans but for anyone, anywhere in
the world, who dream of the seemingly impossible.
His dream then became a vision and he took this vision and made
it into a reality. Barack Obama is an inspiration in many ways, and
the power of his dream is the greatest of them all. Obama’s dream
of becoming the President began at quite a tender age. His journey
actually began in Elementary School when he wrote an essay
expressing his desire to become the President of the United States
of America. Although his teenage years weren’t exactly his best,
with drug and alcohol use, he overcame that milestone to become
the person that he always believed he could be. That goes to show
that anyone can turn their life around and become something truly
amazing.
On February 10th 2007 Obama announced his candidacy for the
President of the United States in front of the Old State Capitol in
Springfi eld, Illinois. This was actually quite symbolic because
Abraham Lincoln had delivered his “House Divided” speech in the
very same place in 1858.
Many people are of the notion that his skin colour does not matter
and that it should not be made an issue. However the reality is…this
is history. It is the very fi rst time that an African American has gone
so far. Two hundred years ago blacks were sitting in boxes at the
bottom of ships in chains and shackles getting ready to be enslaved.
It is important to look back at the history and feel a sense of pride. To
look back at the journey and see how far the entire world has come.
From being enslaved two hundred years ago to now becoming the
ruler of the perceived superpower of the earth is an incredible walk
indeed and it deserves to be applauded as Black History.

PUBLIC SPEAKING CORNER
DO CONTROL YOUR NERVES No one likes standing up and speaking in public initially (apart from a very few extroverted characters) so it is natural to be nervous. However people such as lecturers develop techniques to conquer nerves so that they can stand up in front of a classroom everyday and deliver clear, confi dent lectures.
HOW DO THEY DO THAT?
Confi dence comes from knowing your material thoroughly; if you are sure that your speech is relevant and aimed at the right level (i.e. not too complex or too simplistic) then you will feel better about delivering it. Similarly familiarise yourself with the room in which you will speak, so you know where the podium will be, how many will be in the audience and so on.
Also it’s important to realise that some nervousness is natural and benefi cial to you: the
adrenaline pumping round your body will help
you deliver a better speech, although this should
only kick in a few minutes before you are due to
speak, not several hours or even days before!
Some people fi nd that deep breathing techniques
work to calm them down; others avoid caffeine for the few hours before the ‘performance’.

Valentines Day
I hate Valentines Day,People writing corny love letters,
Trying for a day to be a little better,Saying “I love you” to any old who,
Kisses and hugs parading through and through,An airy feeling of a superfi cial love,
Lasting only simply because,We say, just for a day,
we want that silly little thing called love
And so the pressure is on, to fi nd the one,For a non everlasting, fantastical feeling,Poetry and music, we know how to do it,
Roses and Dinner, Candles and fi re,Butterfl ies fl uttering on our insides,
Waiting for their release back to real life,
Now I suppose in defense of the roseValentines Day can be a pleasure,A way for us to always remember,
! e human need to forever capture…A love that keeps hearts growing closer,And so even if the love dies with time,! e need for love will always be alive,Because embedded in our very nature,

How do you tell the difference between a real bargain and an impulse buy? It has something to do with the feeling you get in the pit of your stomach as you hand over the cash. Do you feel a little thrill of achievement, or the dull thud of guilt? Do you proudly show off your new acquisition to your partner - and tell him/her what it cost - without even being prompted for this vital detail? Or do you sneak your “bargain” in through the back door and surreptitiously hide it in a bottom drawer until you can work out a way to justify buying it?
You can avoid these unpleasant feelings of guilt and regret, by asking yourself two simple questions. By the time you’ve answered them, you will know for sure whether you’re about to bag a bargain, or waste your money.
How much does that bargain •
REALLY cost?
Will you really wear it or use •
it?
HOW MUCH DOES THAT BARGAIN REALLY COST?
OK, so you might’ve found the most beautiful pair of shoes you’ve ever seen. Maybe they’re even half price. But take a good long look at that price tag - half price or not, can you really afford them - even at their sale cost? If walking out of the store with those shoes is going to set you back two weeks fi nancially, there’s no way those shoes could be called a bargain.
A hidden cost of “bargain” clothes lies in special cleaning instructions.
Take a second to calm down as you hold that expensive silk shirt in your hands. Shift your focus from the delicious color and exquisite texture for just a minute and think about the
practicalities of owning this shirt.
Where’s the fabric care label? Does it say “dry clean only”? Do you have the time to hand
wash, drip dry, and carefully iron this delicate fabric? Do you have the time -and money - to get it dry-cleaned regularly? If buying this shirt is going to make you time-poor, you’ve bought a burden, not a bargain.
WILL YOU REALLY WEAR IT OR USE IT?Think about how this potential bargain will fi t with the rest of your wardrobe or apartment. Sure, that lamp may be $100 cheaper than it was before the sale started, but they only have the burnt orange ones left. You want it for a room that’s a buttery yellow. It’s just not going to fi t, whatever it costs.
The same principle applies to the perfect dress- in the wrong size. Sure, you may squeeze into it after the diet, but if not, it will hang at the back of the wardrobe, an unwearable waste of money. Better to get something in your size that makes you feel great, NOW.
It can be hard to make yourself answer these questions when you’re fl ushed with the excitement of the victorious bargain hunter. But get into the habit of questioning your spending like this, and you will always be sure you bought a bargain, and not a burden.
