“NEW BEGINNINGS IN CHRIST” Rev. John P. Gross
In the Gross family the most obvious new beginning is that of Joel and Lily after they exchanged wedding vows on August 10
th. They now have a new life
together, and each step of their journey they will walk in faith with Christ. Think back to when you were first married: we didn't know what the next day would bring, but we were content in our love for one another and that our Savior knew each day of our life before us.
Lily and Joel's lives aren't the only ones affected by their life change into hus-band and wife; Pamela and I are affect-ed as well. We have more room in the parsonage, less clean up, and less money out the door. We will miss them, but I'd be lying if I didn't say there are now things in our lives we will enjoy more of in the future. So it’s a new be-ginning for us as well.
Rally Day is Sunday, September 8th,
and our theme this year is: "New Be-ginnings In Christ." This is the time of year we restart programs that were temporarily off-line during the summer. Choir has been practicing since early August, and they will sing in church the first time on Rally Day. (Practices are Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. If you'd like to sing in the choir feel, free to join in.)
Our class for adults on Luther's Small Catechism will resume on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. on September 24
th. We’ll start with his discussion of
the Lord's Prayer.
A new Bible class for adults on Sunday mornings will begin on September 8
th
with a study of the book of Galatians. That study is also all about new begin-nings in Christ.
Also on the eighth, we will dedicate to the glory of God Zion's new Christ Can-dle in our chancel area in loving memory of John R. Miller. That candle will play an important part in our wor-ship throughout the liturgical year. You will hear more about this in the near future.
Finally, let's end that fun day with a congregational picnic on the church grounds right after late worship. There will be tri-tip, the apple pie baking con-test and fun in general.
St. Paul wrote in Gal. 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no long-er live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
As brothers and sisters in Christ, each day God gives us a new beginning in our life with Him. Your church is here to help you experience that reality in your life through its studies and fellowship activities, so get on board for your own new beginning in Christ.

LUTHERAN MISSION
We go to church to hear Christ preached (Luke 10:16; Romans 10:14-17), through the proclaimed word and His words are “spirit and life” (John 6:63). Therefore, the Divine Service is the power plant for mission. God’s own people then are scattered out into the community that does not know Jesus’ pardoning word. Hearts and tongues drenched by His blood are joyous in proclamation and self-giving (Romans 12:1 ff.); that’s just the way it is. The baptized do what is theirs by faith; bear witness, show mercy and have life together.
Rev. Randall L. Golter, executive
director of the LCMS Office of
International Mission. Quote from

Board President Janet de la Motte
We started off August with the Golf Scramble. What great fun. Dwayne Head did an excellent job in putting this together. We are pleased to announce that the SHIRLEY HEAD TEAM won FIRST PLACE. Those swinging clubs with Shirley were Derek Valine, Mitch Valine, and Stephen de la Motte. Congratulations Team Shirley. Many of us then met over at the Spyglass Restaurant for good food and fellowship coordinated by Mari-lyn Rybar. We’ll want to do this again, as we all laughed about our playing skills or lack thereof. Join us next time.
Next came the wedding of Joel and Lily. That was a most beautiful wedding and so much attention to detail. I don’t think that I’ve seen the church look more beautiful for a wedding. Everyone loved it; even Vito had a good time. Pastor Gross and Pam were kicking up their heels with the family, and Liz Hewitt was fun to watch.
So quickly September is here and the Fellowship Committee is pre-paring for our Rally Day Kickoff!
It’s on September 8th after the 10:30 service. They’ll have some-thing for everyone. Don’t forget to sign-up and bring your family and friends. We’ll also have our fa-mous Apple Pie Contest. Last year’s FIRST PLACE WINNER was KARLA HAEUSER and her daughter ALISON. That was a beautiful pie, but who knows who will win the coveted award this year?
That same Sunday we will be wel-coming several new families into membership. What a joyous time for Zion as we grow our church family. On September 17th at 6:30, we invite the new members to tour the church grounds. Later they will meet up with other church mem-bers who will inform them as to what is available at Zion. We en-courage everyone to become in-volved as we all give of our time and talents to the Lord. The Evan-gelism Committee is coordinating this. Thank you.
Please note that Charlie Gibbs and the Board of Property Management are getting bids for double-paned
windows to install along the north side of the office and classrooms. This will cut down dramatically on the noise and keep the rooms warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. You will also see a new walkway out of classroom #1. This has been coordinated by Nick Watry. These will be needed im-provements to the church property.
Soon to be announced in Septem-ber is a paper shredding event at Zion. It will be held on a Saturday and is sponsored by Thrivent. So accumulate all those old docu-ments that you do not need any-more and look for the date to get those shredded.
September is again a busy month as we begin our fall activities. With that said, I again must quote our former pastor, Donald Poganski:
What is a church and who is going to spread the word of Christ?
The answer is found in the word itself: CH UR CH

Adult choir rehearsals are now in full swing, and
we are aiming for Rally Sunday as our first sched-
uled performance after returning from the sum-
mer break. In tandem with the adult choir, we
are attempting to revive the youth choir here at
Zion, better known in the past as “All God’s Chil-
dren Sing.” For this I will be collaborating with a
new church member, Vicki Ewart, who has multi-
ple years’ experience directing a junior choir at
her former congregation and who will serve pri-
marily as choir director for “All God’s Children
Sing” while I will handle all accompanist duties.
Both the youth and adult choirs currently prac-
tice on Wednesdays, the former at 4pm in CR1
and the latter at 5:30pm in the sanctuary. In
both cases, no audition is required to join, as we
subscribe to the adage “the more the merrier.”
This point in particular was brought home to me
at our first meeting of the adult choir, where we
had several new faces show up and I unexpect-
edly found myself short about five copies of mu-
sic! But such is the fate of a growing congrega-
tion like Zion. Upon encountering this, what can
only be described as a good problem to have
when dealing with a volunteer group, I was in-
stantly reminded of the Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus tells us “But seek ye first the kingdom of
God, and his righteousness; and all these things
shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
Sincerely,
Gregory Riley, M.Mus.
How wonderful it is to be a part of our Lord’s
church here on this “planet earth” (sorry I’m a
Duck Dynasty fan). Honestly, one of the greatest
privileges is encouraging others to never stop
learning and reading God’s word everyday – so
many blessings happen when this is our daily
routine.
It’s the hope of our Parish Ed committee that
more bible classes can be added this Fall for all
age groups and that our children’s Sunday
school time together will continue to be a fun
and Gospel rich time for our children. With some
of our little ones wanting to join the older chil-
dren during this lesson time, a need for another
teacher is becoming apparent. We have our
pre kindergarten room ready to go along with
lessons, songs and crafts so please contact me if
this might interest you.
Exciting news regarding Zion’s desire to continue
being active with our local Tree of Life pregnan-
cy center. We currently have three members,
Carrie Donaldson, Shirley Head and myself in-
volved in a counselor training program led by
Pamela Johnson along with 3 other ladies from
churches in this area. Carol Hemwall has also
been a part of this organization for several years.
Along with support from our LWML, I look forward
to all the Lord might have in store in working with
this Gospel centered organization. Contact any
one of us if you’re interested in this outreach ef-
fort.
We are all looking forward to our Rally Day Sep-
tember 8 – so invite your family and friends to this
great event.
All for His glory,
Chris Haase

A pictorial directory is a great tool in our congregation to help each of us know each other better. Our present directory is pretty outdated. So many new faces! Finally, we can again be on a first-name basis with our brothers and sisters. Your family copy of the 2013-2014 Member Directory will be in your member mailbox on Sunday, September 15.
