What is bullying?A person is bullied when he or
she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on thepart of one or more other
persons, and he or she hasdifficulty defending himself or herself.
Types of bullying?• verbal bullying • social exclusion or isolation • physical bullying • bullying through lies and false rumors • having money or other things taken or
damaged
Types of bullying?• threats or being forced to do
things • racial bullying • sexual bullying • cyber bullying (via cell phone or
the Internet)
How is bullying different from other student interactions?
• The negative behaviors are intentionally targeted at a specific individual and do not occur by accident.
• The bullying behaviors are repetitive in nature and are not a onetime event.
• There is an imbalance of power between the students involved in the incident.
How is an imbalanceof power?
• A single student vs. multiple students
• An older student vs. a younger student
• Larger/taller student vs. smaller student
• Higher rank vs. lower rank
• Disability vs. no disability

How do I start talking about bullying with my class?
1. Define bullying
2. Define the 3 roles in a bullying incident
3. Role play different types of bullying
4. Read picture books that illustrate the concepts discussed in this presentation
5. Have a weekly class meeting to discuss class and bullying issues
