Describe and explain the type of aircraft using :-
a) Spur and Pinion Gear
This aircraft are using the spur and pinion gear.
Spur gears are the most common type of gears. They have
straight teeth, and are mounted on parallel shafts.
Sometimes, many spur gears are used at once to create very
large gear reductions.
Two meshing gears transmitting rotational motion. Note that
the smaller gear is rotating faster. Although the larger gear
is rotating less quickly, its torque is proportionally greater.

One subtlety of this particular arrangement is that the linear
speed at the rim is the same on both gears.
b) Spur Planetary
This Cessna 152 are using the planetary gear system.
In a planetary reduction gear system the propeller shaft is
attached to a housing that contains several small gears
called planetary gear. The lanetary gear rotate between a
sun gear and a ring gear. The crankshaft drives either the
sun or ring gear depending on the individual installation.
Epicyclic gearing or planetary gear is used here for
increasing output speed. The planet gear carrier (green) is

driven by an input torque. The sun gear, in the center, but
almost hidden, has a prominent yellow shaft which provides
the output torque, while the ring gear (pink) is fixed. Note
the red marks both before and after the green input drive is
rotated 45° clockwise.c) Bevel Gear
This Fairey Rotodyne prototype are using the bevel gear.
Bevel gears are gears where the axes of the two shafts intersect and
the tooth-bearing faces of the gears themselves are conically shaped.
Bevel gears are most often mounted on shafts that are 90 degrees
apart, but can be designed to work at other angles as well.
The pitch surface of bevel gears is a cone.

The most familiar kinds of bevel gears have pitch angles of less than90 degrees and therefore are cone-shaped. This type of bevel gear iscalled external because the gear teeth point outward. The pitchsurfaces of meshed external bevel gears are coaxial with the gearshafts; the apexes of the two surfaces are at the point of intersection
of the shaft axes. Bevel gears that have pitch angles of greater thanninety degrees have teeth that point inward and are called internalbevel gears.
Explain the type of aircraft using :-
a) Tapered Shaft
This Cessna 206 is the low powered engine aircraft that use the
tapered shaft.
Tapered propeller shaft were used on most of the early
and low powered engines. On a tapered propeller shaft, the
shaft diameter tapers toward the end of the shaft. To
prevent the propeller hub from rotating on a tapered shaft,
one or more key slots are milled into the shaft. In addition,
the end of the shaft is threaded to receive a propeller
retaining nut.

A tapered propeller shaft changes in diameter along its
length and uses a metal key to keep a propeller from
rotating.
b) Splined propeller shaft.
This B-50 is the high powered radial engine that use the splined
shaft.
Most high powered radial engines aircraft are use splinedpropeller shafts. A spline is a rectangular groove that is
machined into the propeller shaft. Most splined shafts
have a master spline that is approximately twice the size
of any other spline. This master spline assures that a

propeller is attached to a propeller shaft a specific way so
that the vibration is kept to the minimum.
All splined propeller shafts are identified by an SAE
number. For example, SAE 50 identifies a splined shafts
that meets SAE design specifications for a 50 size shaft.
The SAE numbr does not refer to the number of splines.
c) Flanged Propeller Shaft
This H23 Agusta A-109HO is opposed aircraft engines that use flanged propeller shaft.
The flanged propeller shaft mostly use in opposed
aircraft engines. The crankshaft is forged with a flat flange
on its end. A propeller is bolted directly to the flange. To
provide additional support for the propeller, most flange

propeller shafts incorporate a short shaft forward of the
flange and a series of studs around the flange
circumference.
Before you remove a propeller from a flanged shaft,
temporarily mark the propeller hub and flange. This
makes it easier to position the propeller when you retach
it.
