I hope all of you are enjoying your first month of summer. When your kids have some down time, please encourage them to put their devices down, maybe for a whole day or week is even better and play outside or read and old-fashioned book. Fresh air and reading will keep their minds sharp and ready for the next school year. Summer is also a great time to thank Mr. Rostorfer and the summer maintenance crew as well as Ms. Tussing, Coach Metz, Mrs. Kohler and the principals for wrapping up the past school year and preparing us for the coming year. August 18th (Back to School Night) will be here before we know it. If you have not read my letter to the community regarding the start of school, please take a few moments and do so. A copy is included in this newsletter. Thank you!

To the Graduating Class of 2020: The administration and staff would like to offer congratulations to this year’s sen-iors. This year’s class earned $547,540 in scholarship awards. More importantly, these seniors provided leadership and guid-ance for the under-classman. The day-to-day atmosphere and climate in the building was outstanding and this was due in large part to our seniors.
Good Luck in your futures! We hope that your memories of Jackson Center are as fond as our memories are of you.
The 124th Annual Commencement was held on May 24, 2020 in which 36 students graduated. Pastor Michael Mitchell of Maplewood United Methodist Church delivered the invocation and benediction. Mr. Randy Johnson and Mrs. Cari Beth Noah played a recording of the processional and recessional and took care of all other audio needs for the outdoor ceremony. Mrs. Susannah Harris coordinated the multi-media presentation which can be viewed on the Jackson Center District YouTube channel. Salutatorians Kylie Hartle, Garrett Heitkamp, Garrett Prenger, Rachel Sailor and Valedictorians Christopher Elchert, Elizabeth Hickey & Lexi Schmiesing addressed the students. Presenting awards and diplomas to the graduates were Mr. Jeff Reese, High School Principal, and Mr. Bill Reichert, Superintendent. Kylie Hartle class president, lead the Class of 2020 in the moving of the tassel. The ceremony concluded with a parade through town where hundreds were able to show their support for the graduates.

6/1/20 Dear Jackson Center Students, Parents and Community Members, I hope that all of you are having a great start of your summer! Certainly the end of the school year was very different and difficult in many ways. We understand that there is some degree of uncertainty and anxiety as we start to think about the beginning of 2020-21 school year. Even though there is no way we can answer all of your questions at this moment, I do want you to know that as we begin to prepare for next year, we are trying to establish some starting points with our legislators and educational leaders.
● We want to return to school in as much of a “normal” manner as possible. We will try to follow recommendations administered by the CDC, ODH and Ohio Department of Education, but they have to be realistic, age appropriate and enforceable or they will not work. We need to continue to ask for as much local control as possible.
● We will be asking everyone in our community to move from a mindset of “if” we have a COVID-19 case to “when“ we will have a COVID-19 case. Like most viruses, it will be almost impossible for us to completely stop the spread. In fact, as antibody tests become more available, I believe that we will find that we already had cases in our school last winter. How we react to a case or several cases going forward will be a focus in our preparation.
● Since circumstances surrounding the virus change almost daily, we will convene a committee as late in the summer as possible so that we can fully digest the recommendations provided by our government agencies and discuss JC specific responses. That group will consist of parents, staff members and health officials. We will do our best not to “jump the gun” while at the same time respecting your need to plan.
● Now that we know more about the virus than we did in March, many of you are very ready to get back to normal. We understand that. On the other hand, there are some of you that have very valid concerns regarding your personal health and the health of your children and loved ones. We will not be perfect, but we want to honor both.
● Finally, no matter what is decided, we will respect your choice as parents. I tell everyone who asks me to plan for the worst and hope for the best. We will do our best to provide the best educational experience possible in the most normal circumstances as possible, but if you are not ready to take that step and seek an alternative for a time, we will understand.
Thank you for reading, I will be getting back to you periodically as the summer progresses and I hope you all have a chance to enjoy the warm weather with your family and friends. Bill Reichert Superintendent
