The Neogen Cold Weather Biosecurity Brochure
As the temperature drops, don’t let your biosecurity program drop with it! A breach in biosecurity can lead to widespread outbreaks, costing producers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Risk of diseases, such as PED and PRRS, increase in cold weather, so protecting your herd from whatever the winter may bring is essential for a profitable year.
Reach for Neogen’s proven line of cleaners, disinfectants, water treatment, rodent and insect control products this winter to help protect your bottom line from the harshness of old man winter.

Neogen Corporate Profile
Founded in 1982, Neogen Corporation (NASDAQ: NEOG) now operates out of multiple U.S. and international locations, and has a worldwide presence. Neogen develops, manufactures and markets a diverse line of products dedicated to food and animal safety.
Animal Safety Division
Neogen’s Animal Safety Division is primarily engaged in the development, manufacture and marketing of genomic services, veterinary instruments, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, diagnostic products, and a full suite of biosecurity products — such as rodenticides, cleaners, disinfectants and insecticides.
The company’s comprehensive line of proven rodenticides effectively address rodent problems of any size — from eliminating an occasional house mouse to serving as a critical component of an overall biosecurity plan for major food industry, agricultural, and veterinary operations.
Food Safety Division
Neogen’s Food Safety Division consists primarily of diagnostic test kits and complementary products (e.g., dehydrated culture media) sold to food producers and processors to detect dangerous and/or unintended substances in human food and animal feed, such as foodborne pathogens, spoilage organisms, natural toxins, food allergens, meat speciation, drug residues, pesticide residues and general sanitation concerns. The company’s diagnostic test kits are generally less expensive, easier to use and provide greater accuracy and speed than conventional diagnostic methods.
Cleaners and DisinfectantsCleaning is just one step in a two step program to create a safe and clean environment for livestock to rid areas of high soil loads, hard water and areas having porous surfaces. In addition to cleaning, dry cleaning helps remove any gross organic material, allowing the detergent to reach the toughest areas. Proper dry cleaning and utilizing one of the following detergents prior to disinfection will provide the disinfectant a clean surface to eliminate disease causing pathogens from your operation.
Barnstorm®
Barnstorm® is a heavy duty concentrated acidic cleaner and descaler. Its high-foaming detergency is designed to remove both organic and inorganic soils from surfaces prior to disinfection.
Farm-Foam EVOFarm-Foam EVO is a phosphate free, foaming, alkaline cleaner used for the removal of organic soils, especially fats and grease. Farm-Foam EVO is ideal for the removal of fecal material and soil in swine and poultry premises, hatcheries, and other confinement facilities. Farm-Foam EVO removes dirt, grime, protein, and oils, as well as minerals and adherent films.
Quik Clean + PineQuik Clean + Pine (QC+P) is a highly balanced, biodegradable, all-purpose neutral cleaner and degreaser, especially formulated for use on sensitive materials including farrowing crates, livestock trucks and trailers.
Swine-O-Dyne®
Swine-O-Dyne® is an iodine-based sow shampoo developed especially for use prior to farrowing. With the proven germicidal ability of iodine, Swine-O-Dyne helps to break the cycle of cross-contamination between sows and newborn piglets, limiting their exposure to harmful pathogens. No rinse required. However, if company protocol indicates rinse is required, wait 5-10 minutes before rinsing.

Why Clean Before Disinfecting?Cleaning alone reduces microbial levels by 90%. When coupled with disinfecting, microbial reduction can reach 99.999%! Removing organic and scale load prior to disinfection provides the disinfectant with a surface to effectively eliminate pathogens.
DisinfectantsBiosecurity doesn’t cost, it pays! Your ability to prevent the onset of infectious disease goes a long way towards enhancing health and performance while reducing the cost of treating sick pigs. And disinfecting is a big part of that equation.
By definition, biosecurity means; “securing life.” For the pork producer, it can be defined as a comprehensive program designed to create a protective barrier around the production facility that will physically block the introduction of disease. This can be achieved through procedures like (but not limited to); cleaning and disinfecting buildings, vehicles, and supplies, limiting visitors, requiring shower-in shower-out protocols, providing fresh coveralls, and placing boot baths at all building entrances.
To ensure your operation stays secure, reach for one of the following disinfectants this winter to help keep your herd safe and healthy.
Synergize® is a multi-purpose disinfectant-cleaner formulated for use in swine operations. It is also formulated for use on the following equipment in these facilities: waterers, feeders, hauling vehicles and equipment, farrowing crates, nurseries, blocks, creep areas, loading chutes, livestock transportation trucks and trailers, and boot baths.
The disinfection of trailers, tires, and boot baths is an integral part of strict biosecurity protocols, and the impact of freezing temperatures on these applications cannot be overstated. In order to keep Synergize from freezing and allowing it the contact time necessary to be effective, you can add either windshield washer fluid (WWF) or propylene glycol (PG) to your disinfecting solution.*
For small scale disinfecting (tires, undercarriages, loading chutes, loading docks, small equipment, etc.), filling a pump-up or backpack sprayer (2-5 gallon capacity) with WWF concentrate (typically 40% methanol based) plus recommended levels of Synergize Disinfectant (1:256) is the surest way to prevent freezing.
For large scale disinfecting (trailers, transport vehicles) adding 10-20% PG to your disinfecting solution will prevent freezing down to -15°F. The use of a reservoir tank is required for this application. Using an empty 55-gallon drum as our tank, follow these recommended procedures:
1. Fill empty drum with fifty (50) gallons of water2. Add 50 ozs of Synergize Disinfectant3. Add prescribed amount of PG (10-20%) depending on level of freeze
protection desired (down to -15˚F)4. Mix thoroughly
Pump solution directly from drum onto trailer (an electric pump works well for this application).

Rodent ControlRats and mice are estimated to cause $30 billion per year in damages to barns and electrical equipment. They are also vectors of disease such as PRRS, PED, and ileitis, and can consume valuable feed and water on the farm. Due to the extreme summer weather this year, we may see increased pressure from rodents moving in to your facilities this fall and winter. Neogen offers an extensive line of rodent control actives and equipment to keep more money in your pocket. Through a 4-step rotation program, as demonstrated below, you can control rats and mice in and around your operation year round.

CyKill™
Bromethalin, the active ingredient in CyKill, was developed to combat a worldwide perceived problem of rodent resistance to warfarin-like anticoagulant rodenticides. CyKill is not an anticoagulant but a highly potent neurotoxin rodenticide that provides a lethal dose to rodents in a single feeding. Bromethalin attacks the central nervous system; rodents usually consume a lethal dose within a single night’s feeding, with first dead rodents appearing within 2 days.
Now available in a rodenticide bait, Cykill combines superior palatability with the proven active ingredient Bromethaline to control Norway rats, roof rats, and field mice in areas where competing food or feed sources are present.

Ramik®
The perfect diphacinone rodenticide for multiple bait placements and presentations, Ramik is ready to use, easy for wire hanging, pegging to walls, or securing in bait station boxes. They are also the perfect size for small openings where rodents live and travel.
Havoc®
Brodicfacoum, the active ingredient in Havoc, is the strongest anticoagulant rodenticide available. Havoc products combine brodifacoum with a special mixture of highly attractive bait ingredients along with patented food processing techniques. The result is a superior, single-feed rodenticide with a unique bait delivery system.
Now available in a rodenticide bait, Havoc provides an excellent base for superior palatability. The meal bait product offers superior rodent acceptance as it contains food-grade ingredients, seeds and grains, which provide rodents a variety of textures and flavors.
Prozap® Tracking PowderProzap Tracking Powder is an acute, single-dose rodenticide containing 10% Zinc Phosphide. The active ingredient is ingested when grooming, liberating toxic phosphine gas on contact with dilute acids present in the stomach, killing the rodent in a matter of hours. Since rodents groom themselves more frequently than a cat, the amount of grooming throughout the day makes Prozap Zinc Phosphide Tracking Powder the perfect tool for rodent control; especially when rodents have extensive food supplies or will not accept other baits.
