0.1 This Indian Standard Part XVI/Sec 2 ) was adopted by th e IndianStandards Institution on 27 November 1981, after th e draft finalized byth e Terminology Relat ing to River Valley Projects Sectional Committeehad been approved by th e Civil Engineering Division Council.
0.2 A number of Indian Standards have been publ ished covering variousaspects of river valley projects and a large number of similar standardsar e in the process of formulation. T he se s ta nd ar ds include technicalterms, precise definitions of which ar e required to avoid ambiguity intheir interpretation. To achieve this e nd , t he Indian Standards Institutionis b ri ng in g o ut this glossary of terms relating to_ river val ley projects IS : 4410), which is being published in parts. Part: XVI covers th eimportant field of gates and valves. It ha s got tw o sections, this sectiondealing with valves and th e other section with gates already published ).
0. 3 In the formulation of this standard, due wei gh tage h as b een given tointernational co-ordination amo ng t he s tan da rd s an d practices prevailingin different countries in addition to relating it to th e practices in th e fieldin India. This has been met by der iv ing ass is tance from th e following

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard Part XVI/Sec 2 covers th e definitions of th e termsrelating to valves.
2. VALVES
2.1 A ir Valve - A valve that releases air from a p ipeline automaticallywithout loss of water, or introduces ai r into a line automatically if th einternal pressure becomes less than th e atmospheric pressure.
2. 2 A ir I nl et Valve - An air valve that introduces ai r into a p ipelineautomat ically when th e internal pressure falls short of the atmosphericpressure by an amount to sui t th e requirements of a particular system.
2.3 A ir Ou t l e t Valve - An ai r valve that releases air from a p ipelineautomatically without loss of water.
2.4 A ir Relief Valve - An ai r v al ve p ro vi de d on high locations ofpipeline for letting ou t ai r automatically and preventing the pipeline frombecoming a ir b ou nd with a resul tant increase in pressure.
