Case Study [A]Case Study [A]
Data Warehousing/Business Intelligence Project Summary
ChallengeWhen a widely known international engine manufacturing company (EMC) discovered they had multiple sources of the same customer data in different application systems and databases—with no single key identifier for any given customer—they knew it would be next to impossible to track one customer across applications. EMC turned to RYAN Consulting Group, a recognized Business Intelligence Solutions provider, for help.
SolutionRYAN’s team of professionals worked to deliver a cross-business unit strategy and functional design for an enterprise data warehouse that uniquely identifies customers across different business information systems. This Master Data Management (MDM) will have the ability to encompass both a Customer Data Integration (CDI) application and a Product Information Management (PIM) application, enabling EMC to track both their customers and their products as a single entity, regardless of the source of the data.
OutcomesIn giving EMC the ability to track customer data across different business units, RYAN has helped create an environment that improves sales and expense tracking, establishes common pricing and discount policies, obtains a full-circle view of their customers, and identifies EMC’s true valued customers.
RYAN used existing applications and technology wherever possible, including building the data warehouse as a supplemental system. Avoiding replacing entire systems proved to be both time saving and cost effective. In the long run, EMC will be able to operate as both a B2B business and a true B2C business.
The success of RYAN’s team working directly with EMC employees is a contributing factor to why RYAN is now the preferred BI Solutions provider to EMC.

ETL/Business Intelligence ReportingProject Summary
ChallengeA state government agency had worked with two different consulting firms over two years to help them track payments made to employees and retirees but still had nothing to show for the consulting fees they had paid. The agency’s newly appointed CIO was aware of the progress RYAN Consulting Group had made for other organizations and brought them in to help. RYAN’s outstanding reputation in delivering expert results quickly proved rewarding for the agency.
SolutionGiven the agency’s previous experience with consulting firms, RYAN introduced just one BI reporting specialist with expertise in data extraction, translation, and loading (ETL). An initial database assessment revealed that the database was less than ideal in its structure, but its contents could not be changed at the time. Knowing the agency’s top executives needed information right away, RYAN’s BI reporting specialist created an ETL application that cleaned the existing data and created the necessary datasets for producing Impromtu reports.
In less than five months, RYAN was providing approximately 40 different reports for the executive levels of the agency (CEO, CFO, Director, and Board Members) to use in making major business decisions, from tracking employee performance to prioritizing and assigning tasks.
OutcomesRYAN continues to produce and deliver results. Based on the accuracy of the reports, overall performance and quality have improved at the agency, and leadership can easily spot where problems and potential problems are. Now that one major issue has been successfully tackled, RYAN continues to help create a stable database and reporting environment for the agency.

Web-Based Application DevelopmentProject Summary
ChallengeDefense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) needed to develop and host a web-based training application for employees that would provide users with information about career progression levels and related training possibilities for all Department of Defense Financial Management fields. The application had to be secure, accessible by 42,000 financial management employees, and support multiple HR systems on multiple platforms. DFAS turned to RYAN to provide the solution.
SolutionWorking within the existing FIP/Networking environment, RYAN’s team of professionals designed, developed, and implemented data marts. This foundation allowed DFAS to provide a fully interactive web application that assists both employees in determining appropriate career training paths and supervisors in guiding their employees and making use of departmental resources.
OutcomesIn designing a data mart to incorporate all the data from heterogeneous systems into one central repository, RYAN helped the Department of Defense save approximately $2 million.
RYAN also developed dashboards—utilizing multidimensional data cubes as sources—to allow DFAS to visualize and analyze information about key performance indicators.
Because of RYAN’s speed and accuracy in completing the project on time and under budget, the Regional Service Center Program Manager won the prestigious ACCENTURE and MIT Digital Government Award. “None of this would have or could have been accomplished without you,” she wrote in a letter to RYAN employees, recognizing RYAN for their significant contributions to the project.
