Culture Iceberg
• The upper part is relatively easy to observe(10%).
• It is the hidden part of culture that causes us the most problems when we try to work with someone from another culture (90% lies below the surface).
• Values and beliefs are the core of our decision-making process. We act based upon our values. Different cultures have different value priorities.
![Page 10: Introducing Taiwan (I) 11/21 Traditional Festivals](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032704/56649d6c5503460f94a4c4c6/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

• You are on a ship with your spouse, your mother and your child.
• The ship begins to sink. • You are the only one who can swim. • You can save only one of the three.• Who do you save? • You have only 5 seconds to
response.
Consider the following situation…
![Page 12: Introducing Taiwan (I) 11/21 Traditional Festivals](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032704/56649d6c5503460f94a4c4c6/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Who Do You Save?
For the western
• Save the child (60%)
• Reason: My child is the future. My child hasn’t lived life yet. My mother is old and has led her life.
• Few percentage: spouse
• Almost no one choose mother.
![Page 14: Introducing Taiwan (I) 11/21 Traditional Festivals](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032704/56649d6c5503460f94a4c4c6/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
2006 PAX/ Angela Shin-yih Chen
Who Do You Save?
• For the Asians:– Tradition value (age above 40)
• save the mother
– Reason: • My mother is the one who took care of me. I owe
her everything.• I can get another spouse or child, I can’t get
another mother.
– Younger generation:– Response more like the western.
![Page 15: Introducing Taiwan (I) 11/21 Traditional Festivals](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032704/56649d6c5503460f94a4c4c6/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

Who Do You Save?
• This is a terrible dilemma.
• Almost everyone, regardless of cultural differences, would like to save all three.
• The critical issue is how do you choose, if you can only choose one. This is where cultural differences come in.
• Core values can change over time.
![Page 16: Introducing Taiwan (I) 11/21 Traditional Festivals](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032704/56649d6c5503460f94a4c4c6/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Culture Generalization
• It is obvious that everyone from the same culture doesn’t think or act in the same way.
• This is because culture is just one of the many influences that make up any individual.
![Page 20: Introducing Taiwan (I) 11/21 Traditional Festivals](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032704/56649d6c5503460f94a4c4c6/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)

Culture Generalization
Each of us is influenced by at least 3 major factors:
1. biological influences : genetic factors
2. individual factors : personality traits or life experience
3. group membership : vary
Person=F(biological influences, individual factors, group membership)

Culture Generalization
• Above example illustrates why people from the same culture can be very different, yet at the same time show a number of important similarities.
• Cultural generalizations are starting points for understanding others.
• We can generalize about culture, and have to when working with people from other countries.
• Yet, we need to be very careful not to assume that everyone will fit the generalization.
