New Sermon Series about Prayer
Communication is the life blood of any relationship. A life of faith is about having an enduring, growing, loving relationship with the God of the universe. Jesus is the key that helps us see that that kind of relationship is possible with God and guides us in how to open ourselves to it. Prayer is how we communicate with God, with Christ, with the Holy Spirit. There are many ways to pray. A new ser-mon series on Prayer begins on Mother’s Day where we will explore some of the different ways to pray. We will begin with prayers that help us move inward. Then we’ll consider forms of prayer that move us Godward and final-ly reflect on prayers that move us outward. The topics will be:
May 14 – Moving Inward- Simple Prayer
May 21 – Moving Inward – Prayers for those in Pain
May 28 – Moving Godward – Praying Adoration
June 4 – Moving Godward – Unceasing Prayer
June 11 – Moving Outward – Praying the Ordinary
June 18 – Moving Outward – Intercessory Prayer.
Richard Foster’s book, Prayer: Finding the Heart’s True Home will be a resource for the series. Please join us and invite a friend to come along!
Lenten gifts to Orontes Project
We were blessed to share Lenten services with De-sert Mission UMC and Cross in the Desert UMC this year. The three pastors decided to dedicate the offering at each special service (Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday), to support the work of the new outreach to millennials, the Orontes Project. A total of $2,068 was col-lected over Lent to support this important work. Thank you for your generosity!
Introducing Our New Associate Pastor By Rev. Nancy Cushman
Starting July 1, 2017, we will be welcoming Stuart Salvatierra as our new Associate Pastor. NSUMC will be Pastor Stuart’s first ap-pointment to a United Methodist Church. He is from Tucson, Arizona, growing up at St Francis United Methodist Church. He is single with lots of family and friends in Tucson. His grand-mother is a member of our sister church, Desert Mission UMC, where Pastor Nancy’s husband is her pastor. Pastor Stu has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies, Soci-ology and Anthropology from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. This month he is completing his Masters of Divinity from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He is in the candidacy process to be ordained.
Pastor Stu has a passion for children and youth. He has served as a Youth Director and Youth and Christian Education Minister, most recently serving at St Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church. He has also served as the head school-aged/summer camp teacher in Concordia Place, Chicago. It is important to him that the church be an authentic place for people to grow and a community that does not shy away from where the Holy Spirit is working in the world.
Pastor Stu is a bibliophile—he loves reading and col-lecting all kinds of books. He is a self-proclaimed nerd enjoying Star Wars and Star Trek. He will be leading his St Philip’s youth on a pilgrimage in Scotland in the last weeks of June and then joining us at NSUMC on July 1st. We are excited to welcome Pastor Stu and to partner with him in ministry. Please join us as we welcome him at the worship services on July 2nd.

Easter Celebration
A HUGE thank you to our Music Ministry, Worship Committee, A/V team, ushers, greeters, bulletin folders, staff and all the other people who made our Good Friday and Easter services so special. We had many visi-tors and occasional attenders who heard the Good News of Jesus Christ in creative, dynamic and meaningful ways. We could not offer dynamic wor-ship without the hard work and devotion of so many of you. Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you for the lovely altar flowers on April 23rd honoring my birthday day. It was such a nice surprise to have them dedicated to me. I took them home and enjoyed them all week. You are so thoughtful and loving – I am blessed. Thank you again.
Pastor Nancy
Did you know?
The lovely slide presentations that guide you through worship every week are created by Sherry Moore. She has been faithfully using her crea-tive eye to visually communicate the worship’s message for the last five years. She works with the pastors to illustrate sermon themes and sermon series topics. She also creates the announcement slides and has recently added putting the video bulletin board together. The video bulletin board is next to the church office and runs in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays. She shares not only announcements and pictures of our NSUMC family but of special events as well. We thank her for this faithful work that enhances our worship.

If you feel called to this type of ministry (and your me commitment is to-tally up to you) please contact Leah Bergstrom so that enough Care Team Manuals are available. Those who can not a end a day me mee ng are invited to come on Tuesday, May 24th at 6:30 pm. If you are interested, but nei-ther of these mes work for you, some other me can be arranged. Please be in prayer for the Care Team as we want to make certain that all persons feel included in the care and love of this congrega-on.
Here in the office, we celebrated our 1 year an-niversary as a team in April. It’s hard to believe it has been a whole year! We have enjoyed it and learned a lot….about NSUMC…..about each oth-er…..and most of all…..about the loving and caring community we have here and how hard everyone works to keep things happening and successful! You are an amazing congrega on and we are blessed to work with you!
As we look forward to welcoming Pastor Stuart, who will begin on July 1st, sadly, and gratefully, we will say goodbye to working along side Pastor Leah Bergstrom, who has so willingly and capably filled in since Pastor David was reassigned. We will miss you in this role, Pastor Leah, but happily find com-fort in the fact that you will s ll be in our midst as our member, Leah Bergstrom, and we will see you o en. Con nued thanks for your kindness and caring and for all that you do.

Wesleyan Quadrilateral High School Milestone
The High School Milestone for 2017 was learning about the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. The students discussed the four elements of discerning if a concept is biblically accu-rate. This Milestone Celebra on was celebrated on Sun-day, April 30th during the 10:00am worship service.
Wesleyan
Quadrilateral The phrase which has rela vely recently come
into use to describe the principal factors that John Wes-ley believed illuminate the core of the Chris an faith for the believer. Wesley did not formulate the succinct statement now commonly referred to as the Wesley Quadrilateral. Building on the Anglican theological tradi-on, Wesley added a fourth emphasis, experience. The
resul ng four components or "sides" of the quadrilateral are (1) Scripture, (2) tradi on, (3) reason, and (4) experi-ence. For United Methodists, Scripture is considered the primary source and standard for Chris an doctrine. Tra-di on is experience and the witness of development and growth of the faith through the past centuries and in many na ons and cultures. Experience is the individual's understanding and appropria ng of the faith in the light of his or her own life. Through reason the individual Chris an brings to bear on the Chris an faith discerning and cogent thought. These four elements taken together bring the individual Chris an to a mature and fulfilling understanding of the Chris an faith and the required response of worship and service.
2nd Grade “Bible Sunday”
Our church has a wonderful tradi on of giving Bibles to our second grade students. This year we will have this celebra on on Sunday, May 21st, 2017 during the 10am

Please confirm your child’s a endance by contac ng one of your child’s Sunday School teachers when you visit them in your child’s Sunday School classroom on any Sunday!
We would like to thank you, the parent, for the dedi-
ca on of bringing your children to church. Thank you for encouraging them to learn about God’s grace. It’s through your faith and guidance that your child has an interest and love of learning about Jesus. We would also like to thank the United Methodist Women of NSUMC who donate the funds to make these Bibles a reality for our students!!!
We look forward to celebra ng this special moment with our 2nd grade students and their families.

DSW CONFERENCE MISSION PROJECT. Each year the De-sert Southwest Conference selects an all church mission project. You may remember the socks, beans and rice, and, last year, the gi cards for foster children. This year’s pro-ject is suppor ng our urban ministries in stocking a strong supply of items not allowable for purchase through SNAP. Dona ons needed: toilet paper, paper towels, soap, deo-dorant, toothpaste, shampoo, condi oner, diapers, adult diapers. Flushable wipes, Ajax or Comet, Windex, dish soap, hand soap, hand or body cream. Items will be distributed to TMM, UMOM, Justa Center, Wesley Golden Gate, and the Welcome to America project.
Please bring your items to the Mission Table in the Fellow-ship Hall.
TRINITY OPPORTUNITY ALLIANCE. We are excited to an-nounce that we have hired two new staff!
David Decker, MBA, was selected as the Director of Ad-ministra on. He worked for Wells Fargo for 12 years, serv-ing in posi ons responsible for strategic planning project management, and customer insights and analysis. David also served as the Senior Director of Consumer Insights and Innova on for Aetna. He has his MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management and will complete his PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from Arizona State University in 2019.
Madge Haynes, ACSW, LCSW, was selected as the Director of Programs. She has worked in the child welfare field for her en re career. This includes serving as Senior Director/Deputy Director for Casey Family Programs in California and Phoenix. Madge was also the Execu ve Director of Arizona Partnership for Children. She has her Master of Social Work, Child Welfare Specializa on from Arizona State Uni-versity.
Janice Grandy, a founder and first Program Director, will remain on the Board of Directors. She has done a fabulous job launching this important ministry. When you see her, give her a BIG THANK YOU!
UMOM WATKINS DINNERS. We count on you to provide support for this work. We cannot do it without your dona ons of hamburgers and frozen vegetables. We have a new freezer in the kitchen. It is located on the south wall next to the door. We also need to purchase food every month – buns, cookies, milk, etc. so financial support is also needed. If you would like to serve a meal or donate food,
contact Marilyn Gray at [email protected] or Rich Jensen at [email protected].
BOOKS FOR VETS. We are s ll collec ng books and magazines for the VA. As noted above, we are also collec ng books for the jail libraries. Commi ee members will sort those appropriate for each so keep the books coming!
PRISON MINISTRY. Over the past year, we have learned about the challenges individuals who are incarcerated face both during the me they are in prison and when they are released. We have also learned about the work that Red Mountain UMC is doing to support the women who are in the Perryville facility. Clearly, there are many needs and opportuni es for our congrega on to help these individuals get their lives back on track. A er considerable discussion the Mission Commi ee under the leadership of Laura Brownfield decided that we would partner with Red Mountain’s program that helps women get their GED – high school equivalency. The prep classes are offered at the prison but there is a one- me cost of $100 for the exam. This is beyond the reach of many of the women. The Mission Commi ee is commi ng $600 from its budget. We are also accep ng dona ons from the congrega on to match these funds. If you are interested in learning more contact Laura Brownfield at [email protected] or John Helbert at [email protected].
