Brief Overview of Hydro Power Market in Pakistan- An Alternative Solution
Pakistan one of the under developing country, in spite of existing Gods gifted natural resources has the huge deficits of energy, and passing through the crisis, one to be blamed is not enough, however proper utilization of these resources can lead us to prosperous Pakistan, and Government of Pakistan should and must take an initiative in this era to develop the energy market.If we survey the energy industry of Pakistan, rarely we can found countable manufacturers in the market, who are manufacturing and offering products and services in the energy market, however being Pakistani nation, we always rely on imports of energy markets products instead of locally manufacturing. As Pakistan is facing electricity crisis, and many rental powers have been stopped working at initial stages, however in this era of globalization and in the recent crisis an alternative products should be introduce in the market; however there are three main alternative solutions for electricity crisis, through the help of natural resources we can overcome the energy deficits in the country, in this the main three alternative solutions are Hydro Power, Wind Energy and Solar Energy
Pakistan being underdeveloped country having population of almost 19 million approximately, facing the energy crisis in this era of globalization, as the population is increasing day by day, and with this increase the basic needs like electricity is increasing day by day, in order to meet the requirements few entrepreneurs have established a well reputed place in the energy market.
For our project based and being in the market we take the market of Hydro power and the manufacturers in the market. The manufacturers in Pakistan are enjoying monopoly and enjoying well and good reputation in the market. However the manufacturing capacity varies entity to entity.MARKET SCENARIO:-The market scenario of energy sector in Pakistan is very interesting, where Government is investing its huge sum of budget on imports, that is much more risky, still relying on imports and our mostly finances are handled by foreign reputed companies, this is just because of incapability of man power, skill labor and investors, just because of this reason we rely on imports and ready made products and hence our local skills development cannot be enhanced, and we give minimum preference to our local manufactured products as compared to foreign.MARKET POTENTIAL:- The energy market in Pakistan shows huge potential, just because of incapability of man power and investors in this sector, development era became condensed. Potential market exists in the following three main sectors in the energy market:- Hydro Power Market
Solar Energy Market
Wind Energy Market
For our project and being in the market, we take the hydro power market in Pakistan, where some well established reputed firms are offering manufacturing products and services to meet the energy deficits and to play their role to overcome the electricity crisis in the region, however a backward support from the Government is required in order to boost the energy market.HYDROPOWER An IntroductionHydropower is the best alternative in order to meet the electricity crisis and to overcome the energy deficits. Hydro power simply uses rushing water from a certain height that converts the mechanical energy into electrical, minimum head and discharge gives a good output for household and other utilizations, one time investing is required in the implementation of the hydro project, which can be locally easily manufactured.MARKET LEADERS & MANUFACTURERS IN HYDROPOWER:-Hydropower, which is very cheap source of electricity, Government of Pakistan should and must take an initiative to develop this sector; however there are solely four manufacturers in this market and serving the local communities by providing them sustainable and cheap products and services since 1987. However the market share became competitive and varies since the market inception.
INDUSTRY ANALYSIS :- (HYDROPOWER)In the energy market there are four manufacturers, reputed well and serving the sector since its first introduction in Pakistan. Among the four engineering companies the number one established firm established was Chitral Engineering Works Taxila, established as sole proprietorship in 1987, the first man, who was un educated took the first initiative to introduce hydro power in Pakistan. The second manufacturer in this sector was S.K Hydro Lahore, who took the second initiative after the first one. The third one was Mukhtiar Engineering Works Mardan Peshawar and the fourth one is the Hydrolink Engineering & Equipment Company (Pvt) Limited based at Small Industrial Estate Taxila. Lets have a short introduction to each of the mentioned firms/companies one by one in order to make the analysis more comprehensive:-
Chitral Engineering Works
Established in 1987, by a uneducated person under sole proprietorship, this was the first initiative taken by a person who was technically nil at the initial stages, became market leader after hard struggle, and introduced first micro hydel units in Pakistan. Since its establishment he has designed, manufactured and installed more than 1000 units in different part of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and contributed almost 10,000 to 15,000 mega watt to the nation of Pakistan. However this person was enjoying full monopoly in the market before the entrance of new firms in the sector. The manufacturing capacity of this firm was up to 500KW, he is technically very strong with a efficient and skillful term.STRATEGIES OF CHITRAL ENGINEERING WORKS:-At initial stages Chitral engg works was enjoying full monopoly in the market, and was using low cost strategy for the awareness of the products and increasing the market share till 2000 round about 13 years. In 2000, suddenly Chitral Engineering Works increased the prices with differentiation strategy by providing a good quality products and services, and was also serving as market leader till the entrance of other competitors in the market. This was the only one manufacturer in Pakistan till 2000.
S.K HYDRO LAHORE
The firm was established in 2000 under the partnership act of Pakistan, this was the second initiative taken by three partners, in order to compete Chitral Engineering Works to offer a good quality low cost products and services in the energy market, the firm is based at Lahore, at initial stages this firm faced major problems regarding technology of manufacturing and creating awareness about its products and services in energy market. However with low technical assistance the firm succeeded to compete Chitral Engineering Works.
STRATEGIES OF S,K HYDRO LAHORE:-
S.K Hydro follows low cost strategy due to its low technical assistance, the market share is low as compared to Chitral Engg Works, due to its low quality products and services, with the arrival of this firm in the market, the market share of Chitral Engineering Works effected to some extant. The capacity of manufacturing of this firm is up to 300 KW. As Lahore is the main market is highly accessible to all kind of raw materials, and S.K hydro has the opportunity to access the market, and use just in time approach as he does not bear any kind of transportation freight charges for raw material, and no huge sum of investment is required for him, that is why he is offering low cost products, however after sale services are nil as compared to Chitral Engg Works.
MUKTIAR ENGINEERING WORKS MARDAN
Established in 2001, this firm consists of seven real brothers, who runs the firm and enjoys a well reputation in the energy market since its establishment.
STRATEGIES ADAPTED:-
MEW enjoys and follows low cost strategy and offers low quality of products having high volume of production and sales in the market, the market shares are increasing with a low pace. Its capacity of manufacturing is round about 200KW, this firm use low cost strategy due to its cheap and skilled workforce, and because for purchasing stock of raw materials on discount which does not effect his manufacturing cost due to ups and downs in the fluctuated market and also due to large volume of production as compare to other competitors, this firms follows imitation of competitors which keep them at low cost, no proper innovation or research process they carry.

To green Pakistan
Hydro Power; a nations distinctive competency;Hydropower is a renewable energy source that provides an important share to electricity generation. It is attractive since it presents a cost effective and clean renewable energy source.
Achieving sustainable energy supply and ensuring the efficient use of energy is one of the central challenges of the 21st century. As economics and populations grow, so does energy consumption. In order to limit climate change and to meet the growing demand for energy at the same time, it is required to switch to better, cleaner energy sources without undermining economic and social development.
At present, the installed electricity generation of Pakistan is over 20,000 MW. However, due to a variety of reasons, the actual generation frequently dips down by 25 to 30% causing extensive power outages. In spite of the persistent problem, the demand for electricity is projected to continue rising in the foreseeable future by over 1,000 MW every year. Thus, the assumed gap between energy generation and demand will even widen.
Hydropower potential in Pakistan is estimated at 41,722 MW. This is indeed a huge potential. Yet, this environmentally benign hydropower has not been used fully so far. At present, one of the most cost effective ways to supply energy for industry and urban areas is an improvement in energy efficiency. These advantages in savings from improved energy efficiency and electricity generation from hydro power plants are attractive in terms of direct economic benefits. But moreover, they are also beneficial in terms of reduced environmental impacts, reduced emissions of carbon dioxide gas as well as in terms of reduced import bills and the overall economy of Pakistan.
Thus, the effective and efficient use of renewable energies in Pakistan depends on the recognition of some major facts:
The importance of providing affordable electricity generated from renewable energy resources for helping the low-income strata and for maintaining competitiveness in industrial products.
The minimization of carbon emission in order to reduce climatic change that threatens the livelihoods of millions on Earth.
The significance of reducing the emission of poisonous gases and other harmful chemicals that make people sick, reduce their productivity, reduce crop yield, damage the environment, and thus reduce the overall economic growth of the country.
Hydro Power is an attractive option for fast growing population having Gods gifted natural resources and is indeed a nations distinctive competency. God has gifted us wide natural resources; have to just utilize those resources for eco-friendly energy production.
The only alternate and an attractive option for a country like Pakistan to meet the electricity crisis in this era of globalization is the investment in hydro power sector and to develop a fair and unbarred power policy, so that the manufacturing sector of energy market can be enhanced. Our estimated survey for hydropower potential sites has shown that in Pakistan by the help of mini, micro and medium hydel projects, we can overcome the energy deficits up to 80%, however more & more potential is expected in the Northern Areas and AJK.
Hydro Power Operation:The operation of hydel project is very simple, it only uses the rushing water from a certain height through M.s pipe and hits the blades of the runner (turbine) and convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy with the help of alternator and is free of any pollution and eco-friendly. However the output varies with water and head, and the design for turbine selection varies respectively.
GTZ, AEDB, PPAF & AKRSP, the Main Players behind the Development;The efforts of German Technical Zone, AEDB, PPAF and AKRSP are appreciable in the energy market, GTZ is encouraging the local manufacturers through training and exposure visits to international manufacturers, this ultimately enhance the skills in the local manufacturers, and these kind of training and exposures visit to different international manufacturers will be helpful for the manufacturing sector development in the Pakistani market.
The recent efforts of GTZ and AKRSP indicates the interest of these organizations, AKRSP with the support of GTZ conducted many trainings in the energy field, but the recent training from Indonesia, where the local manufacturers got the T-15 license after three week training from ENTEC Indonesia, however in the future GTZ with the coordination of AKRSP shall be enhancing the training programs and ultimately results will be the manufacturing capacity enhancement for T-15 model cross flow turbine and others.
Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), funding the local NGOs, which are putting their efforts to provide electricity to backward communities, AKRSP one the leading local NGO, behind the ASHDEN Award, has so far installed more than 500 micro, mini and medium hydel units in Chitral, Gilgit, Baltistan and other areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan, however AKSRP being a non-profit organization looking forward to install more and more hydel units in the backward areas with the support of GTZ and PPAF, where no other alternative is available to fulfill the basic need of electricity.
However we are very thankful to GTZ and AKRSP for their support and in the long run we are expecting the same support, so that we can mutually enhance the energy sector by the help of hydel projects, and we are committed to joint hand with AKRSP and will fully support and will provide sustainable products and variety of services for the implementation of hydel projects from Micro to Mega.
Hydrolink Developing Stage;
The idea to enter in the energy market with a professional team, who had vast experience in the implementation of hydel units, was the lack of confident and technical manufacturers in the market. The hydel engineers with the advice of the GM AKRSP decided to start manufacturing of hydro turbines with services, and to put their efforts in the sector enhancement.
The lack of confident, technical manufacturers in the market provided an opportunity to the engineers to enter into the market with an experience of installing more than 300 micro hydel units, the engineers with a broad vision entered into the market to serve the local NGOs and Governmental organizations in a better way as compared to other manufacturers. The manufacturing capacity of for the hydro turbines in the Pakistani market is up to 300kw, the main aim to enter into the market was to develop and enhance this manufacturing capacity up to megawatts, along with GTZ and AKRSP support, Hydrolink team is also putting their efforts for the enhancement of the manufacturing capacity.
Hydro Turbine Manufacturing in Pakistan;
Hydrolink with a team of professional engineers with their vast experience entered into the market in 2008, and is serving the local and foreign NGOs through survey, designing, manufacturing and installing of micro, mini and medium hydro turbines including crossflow, Kaplan and Pelton wheels up to 500 Kw, however the team is now looking forward to enhance the manufacturing capacity from 500 Kw to 1 Mw, a backward support from GTZ and AKRSP will be helpful in this regard and we expect, so far they are doing..
LICENSING:-Linkages with International Manufacturers;
Hydrolink manufacturing is not limited with the local manufacturing and technology, the recent achievement of T-15 Crossflow turbine license from ENTEC Indonesia, for manufacturing of crossflow turbines up to 120Kw, through the support of AKRSP and GTZ, and in the future it is expected to increase the capacity up to 500 Kw.
Hydrolink recent another achievement is the Joint venturing agreement being signed between Hydrolink and SHZ Company China, where it was concluded that SHZ Company will give full technical support to Hydrolink and will transfer the manufacturing technology for the manufacturing of turbines up to 1 MW including Crossflow, Pelton, Kaplan and Francis, however the process will be taken as step by step and this initiatives will be helpful for energy sector development of Pakistan, as so far we are relying on imports of those units, it increases the cost of the unit and with other risks involved, however the local manufacturing of larger units will play a vital role in the economic development and will also develop the skills of our local workforce.

____________________________________________________________Conclusion
HEECO is a big name in alternative renewable energy sector. Its position is better than other competitors which are working in Pakistan. HEECO has a good sales force, good business strategies and strong distribution system. This thing makes the company different from other companies. I spend seven weeks with this company but I see in this company there is no politics no unionism and no any conflicts between management and employee. All the people who are working with HEECO are hardworking and motivating and have vast experience in this sector. But I did not understand why they are focusing only hydel sector while they have good set up in other manufacturing and also have the capability of producing solar energy system and wind energy system. FMC is basically Pakistani company and it has also good reputation in Afghanistan. I think if the company can properly enter in Afghanistan it will be market leader. Also with its setup Pakistans economic condition will improve.
The government of Pakistan should also support the sector to meet its needs and demand of energy and to lead Pakistan toward prosperityINTERENSHIP REPORT HYDROLINK
