THE GROVE PLANTING PROJECT: A NEW PARTNERSHIP
Following Jesus’ call, United Methodists have been committed to reaching people with God’s love in Cottage
Grove for 166 years. A special emphasis on Cottage Grove began in 1989 with the appointment of Pastor Jim
Baker. Pastor Jim and other key leaders planted a United Methodist church that has faithfully served the area
for 30 years.
The Grove — one church in two locations — has clear values that are lived out at both the Woodbury and
Cottage Grove campuses. We have learned how to build community partnerships and connect with our
neighbors. We are willing to innovate and take risks to reach new people.
The Grove has a beautiful campus in Cottage Grove that has been lovingly built and maintained for ministry. It is
strategically located near Hwy 61 and Jamaica next to Armstrong Elementary School and across the street from a
major commercial development.
In March 2017, after 30 days of prayer, our congregation approved a strategic MCCI proposal. This included a
prescription to put a special emphasis on revitalizing the Cottage Grove campus. The Grove and the Minnesota
Annual Conference have a unique opportunity to revitalize our efforts to reach new people in the Cottage Grove
area through a partnership model.
The Minnesota Annual Conference has raised $250,000 to support a church planter for Cottage Grove, with a
special emphasis on families with young children. The annual conference also provides supervision, coaching
and ongoing training to its church planters. After a careful assessment process, Bishop Bruce Ough appointed
Pastor Jeremy Peters to this work. Jeremy has a compelling vision to reach new people with God’s love in
Cottage Grove. He is strategic, experienced and motivated. Most importantly, he passionately loves God and
God’s people and shares the values of The Grove.
The Core Team voted to move forward and partner with the Minnesota Annual Conference to undertake the
church planting project in Cottage Grove. We believe this partnership is an answer to prayer. This partnership
brings the right pastor, with the right vision, with the right resources, to the right location, at the right time to
build on the ministry that began in 1989.
Throughout the month of January, there will be opportunities to learn more about the Cottage Grove Planting
Project and ways that you can engage in this work. (See adjacent page.)
Starting a new faith community is not easy, and is a risky endeavor, but we know that is the nature of faith. The
Grove has a rich legacy of taking risks to answer Jesus’ call to reach new people with God’s love.

the street to address a title issue for a neighbor.

BOOK STUDY
Six Wednesdays beginning
January 8 9:30 am or 6:30 pm Woodbury Campus
Cost: $15 Books available in the office
When Henri Nouwen — a respected and
loved pastor, theologian and writer—was
asked by a secular Jewish friend to explain
his faith in simple language, he responded
with his greatest legacy, the book Life of the Beloved, which shows that God loves
all people, believers and nonbelievers,
unconditionally. This book also explores
how one can live a spiritual life in a
secular culture.
An excerpt from Life of the Beloved: “Are you, like me, hoping that some
person, thing, or event will come along to
give you that final feeling of inner well-
being you desire? Don't you often hope:
'May this book, idea, course, trip, job,
country or relationship fulfill my deepest
desire.' But as long as you are waiting for
that mysterious moment you will go on
running helter-skelter, always anxious and
restless, always lustful and angry, never
fully satisfied. You know that this is the
compulsiveness that keeps us going and
busy, but at the same time makes us
wonder whether we are getting anywhere
in the long run. This is the way to spiritual
exhaustion and burn-out. This is the way
to spiritual death.”
