This May, Lower Hutt comes alive again with the curiousity, enthusiasm and innovation of young people ready to take up the science and technology challenge. The Hutt STEMM Festival, running throughout May, celebrates science, technology, engineering, mathematics and manufacturing. It will deliver a diverse range of activities appealing to pre-schoolers right through to experts in their field.
The fourth annual festival is held in recognition of Lower Hutt’s medium, high-tech and manufacturing industries and provides a platform for the Hutt’s science and technology sector to meet, share ideas and showcase their products and
services. This sector contributes more than $380 million to our region’s economy and employs more than 3,500 people.
Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace believes celebrating STEMM is central to the economic future of the city. “It’s always great to see our young people engaged with science and technology during the festival. We’re excited about potential new developments in these areas coming soon.”
Highlights of this year’s festival include:
• Activities for students and teachers: including the Hutt Science STEMM Student Challenge, Principals’ Day, Seaview Business Tours and fun library activities such as “Rocket Day”
• An industry workshop on Applications of New Technology in the Urban Environment – to connect local STEMM businesses so they can collaborate on new technologies
• Regional judging of the NZ Space Challenge – a unique new national
competition that will build the country’s potential for a space-based industry
• Women in Tech networking breakfasts, where speakers include Executive Director of TechWomen, Edwina Mistry; and the Director-General of the GCSB, Andrew Hampton
Festival programmes will be available soon at Council libraries and pools city-wide, online at huttstemm.nz, and delivered to local schools at the start of term two.

In mid - 2018, Hutt City Council will unveil the new Lower Hutt Events Centre and refurbished Town Hall, key milestones in our city rejuvenation project. The Civic Precinct is at the heart of our city and we’re aiming to create an area that’s
people-friendly, artistically rich and boosts the local economy.
The refurbished heritage Town Hall and new Events Centre will offer the best of both worlds. The Town Hall will seat up to 800 people for shows and performances. The Events Centre will cater for up to 900 people (550 seated for dinners) and provide
a modern, flexible space for events, including multi-day exhibitions and conferences.
The new Events Centre will add to a suite of facilities and venues across the city, with new community hubs and new and upgraded sport and recreation facilities also catering to a range of budgets and community needs.
As one of the key projects in Council’s Economic Development Strategy, it is estimated that over the next 20 years, the new development will inject $55-$75 million into the local economy and create up to 90 associated jobs per year.

Hutt City Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council and the NZ Transport Agency are combining their skills and working together on a project which will bring big benefits to the local and regional Hutt Valley community – you may have heard of it, it’s called RiverLink. RiverLink will deliver better flood protection, better lifestyle and improved transport links for the people of central Lower Hutt.

Koraunui Stokes Valley Community Hub is running a photography competition.Take a photo of yourself or a friend doing something spectacular in Stokes Valley. It could be something as simple as walking the dog, having a bbq with your friends, visiting the hub, pool or basketball court or even a beautiful sunset – it’s up to you!
The competition is running from Monday 16 April to Monday 14 May, so don’t forget to pack your camera or smartphone – everyone who submits a photo is in with a chance.

Lower Hutt-based insurance brokers aibGROUP insurance are sponsors of the foyer at the new Fraser Park sports centre, which is due to open at the end of the year.“A lot of our staff are from the Hutt and involved in sport and we think the Sportsville concept, bringing clubs together in one facility is a good idea. It just makes sense, will add value to the community and attract sports people to the area,” says Michael Blackmore, founder and joint managing director of the 15 year old company.
Michael has lived in the Hutt Valley since he was 13 and with colleagues from the insurance industry, amalgamated businesses to start a new company, CFS Risk Services Limited 2003. The aibGROUP is now the largest local insurance brokering firm in the Hutt Valley.
Michael and joint managing director, Matt Roberts are both Hutt boys who have played sport in the valley. “As a local company with 27 staff, we want to make a difference in the community.”
“Matt played rugby for Hutt Valley Marist which was based at Fraser Park and I also played a lot of cricket over the years (for Hutt District) and had many competitive matches against Taita at Fraser Park.”
Due to open by the end of 2018, the recreational centre at Fraser Park will become a regionally significant precinct for sport, recreation and community activities, benefitting the local community and bringing social and economic benefits to Lower Hutt.
