FEN - All Italian Gathering
In This Issue:
After enjoying the great weather we had the day before, many of us had hoped Easter Sunday would be
sunny and warm as well. It was not to be. The rain not only fell, it seemed to stay centered in Issaquah
over the Fiat Enthusiasts NW (FEN) annual All Italian Gathering at the Triple X Drive Inn.
Despite the weather, there were still nice cars showing, and a number of happy car people. About 10
Alfa Romeos easily outnumbered the three Ferraris. In fact, with only a single car in each of the catego-

Alfa seemed rather plentiful. (The Lada

came on the car!) Fiat had the most cars
with 8 of the X1/9s, a few 124 spiders,
and old 500, plus half a dozen of the new
500s including our member, Tracy King-
stone.
The rain kept the crowds away and
shortened the overall event timing. As
they closed up the voting and put away
flags and signs… the locals kept talking
and enjoying the cars even with light rain
falling. The end vote winners were
Gordy Hyde and his JrZagato with Best

Tracy Kingstone also won for best Fiat

President’s Column by Merril Gordon
It’s President’s Column writing time again. The
interview I had planned fell through so I’ll have
to do that one next month. Now what? Remem-
ber when all of you were back in school and
needing to write something down but not having
any good ideas to expound upon? Hmmmm….I
need an idea.
Now how did I let myself get talked into this situation of becoming Presi-
dent anyway? There’s this monthly column to write, responsibility for en-
suring all the club positions are filled, providing input to the direction of
the club, and having a few opportunities to speak in front of crowds. An
internet search of my name now produces a result with a connection to
our club. I think I liked the anonymity of a no result that used to happen
before. Well, it ultimately boiled down to this; my excessively overinflated
ego getting an opportunity to stand in front of a captive audience. Ok, not
quite, the real reason was that all these years I’ve been enjoying club
drives, days on race tracks, national conventions, lunches along scenic
drives, wine tours, car shows, Christmas dinners, and hanging around
people with similar interests. All those events are organized by someone
in our club. So I figured it was my turn to pay real dues, i.e. volunteering
time, to keep all these activities moving along.
How am I doing? Well, my public speaking is a little shaky, but I’ve got
our club editor and secretary to cover for me on that score if I over look or
stumble on something. I haven’t twisted arms hard enough to get other
volunteers to sign up to lead driving tours or fill the empty positions of
Corsa Director, Driver Instructor Coordinator, or someone to tow the corsa
trailer to club track events. So I need to work on getting those positions
filled with people willing to step up and lend a hand. If you’d like to help
the club out with these tasks, I’d love to have you on board. Beyond that,
our current NWARC staff is doing pretty well. Special mentions? Kudos to
Thomas Jermann for his continued work threading our club’s non-profit
status through the IRS labyrinth of requirements. Also to Kathleen Bouti-
ette for coordinating all the details of putting on our track days. She pulls
her weight and then some.
Other than that? Well, I’ve got this column to complete. Still need an
idea to write for an article . . . .
All the best to our Alfa owners and new track rats who enjoy the smell of
scrubbed rubber and brake dust in the morning.

News For Alfisti…
April Fools article in last month’s issue… How many of you were upset at the article about Sergio Marchionne’s press conference and the
news about the use of the Chrysler C-Evo platform from a Dodge Caliber for the base of an Alfa SUV? Though it sounded scary and like it just
might really happen, there were two or three subtle clues that it was not really the tragic future for us. Be highly suspect of any author named Al
Faromeo, and of things scheduled for release on April 1st. The painfully believable article was written by Dave Emerson and Fred Russell, mash-
ing a few actual press releases together and taking some editorial license. The PhotoShop work was nicely done by Taylor Russell. I hope you
had a great April Fools Day.
Alfa Delays Reentry Into US Market Until 2013. Really! Alfa Romeo is reported delaying its return to the
US until 2013 because Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne is unhappy with the proposed vehicle designs bound
for the our shores. Marchionne cited manufacturing and styling issues that need fixing before the 2013 Alfa Ro-
meo Giulia is ready to be released both in the States and abroad. The delay pushes the Giulia back from a late
2012 release to sometime in mid 2013. Marchionne is also unhappy with efforts from Chrysler designers to retool
the Giulia as a replacement for the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger, models which Fiat-Chrysler is hoping to de-
but in 2013. Since the two new Chryslers and the Giulia will share a platform, (No! That really is true!) a delay for
one means a delay for the others. They do still have an SUV on the drawing boards aiming for a 2012 European
release.
Can you tow the club trailer to Bremerton for the Lapping day on May 27th? We need your help or suggestions!
Contact Merril at: [email protected]
Build Alfa Romeos in Canada? Canada has floated an offer to Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne to consider building Alfa Romeos North of the US
border. Canada has a strong history of building cars with each of the Big Three US car companies having had plants in Ontario for many years.
Tax incentives and easy access to US borders may make it a reality. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Alfa sales are up in April… Fiat sold a total of 32,113 cars in Italy in April, down almost 15% from last April, but they claim Alfa Romeo sales
actually increased. That is good news that despite the economy, they have a product
people want. Will Americans want them when they finally reach our pavement? During
the same period, Toyota only sold 6070 cars in Italy, and they have that cool sudden ac-
celeration issue. (I wish my car had sudden acceleration.)
The IRS has completed the review of our application and approved NWARC's tax ex-
empt status. We are now officially a 501 (c) (7) tax exempt organization! This con-
firms what our state status has been but includes a few new rules and guidelines. Con-
grats!
The Museo Alfa Romeo will be entering 3 cars in the 2011 version of the Mille Miglia
Historica, on May 12-14. Alfa was a serious powerhouse during the 1927–1957 races…
now they are always represented well by private and museum entries. The first museum
car will be a 6c1500 Super Sport, entrusted to the Moceri-Labate crew and identical to
the model which Campari and Ramponi won the race in 1928. The second vehicle to be
entered is a 6c1750 Gran Sport from 1930, driven by Salvinelli-De Marco, a model which
became legendary through the Mille Miglia: it was in a similar 1750 that Nuvolari and
Guidotti won in 1930. Finally, a 1900 Super Sprint from 1956 completes the official ve-
hicles group: two journalists will drive this coupé with a body of a Touring car, typical of
the 1900s, the "sports saloon which wins the races", prestigious gran turismo in the
1950s, and top of the Alfa Romeo range at the time.
Café Veloce - Collector Car Insurance
At the April club meeting, a hearty group of Alfisti enjoyed Italian fare and libations at
Café Veloce in Kirkland. After socializing and the requisite business meeting, we were
treated to an informative talk about Collector Car Insurance presented by our resident
expert, Starke Shelby, principle of Northwest Insurance Center.
After the meeting some of us got the opportunity to preview the feature of our May
meeting; Tracy Kingstone brought her FIAT 500 Prima Edizione (#285 of 500), which
she had purchased the week before.
At the business portion of the meeting we were informed that we have gained nearly 50
new members, many of whom are interested in the track events which our chapter sponsors so expertly and prolifically. Merril Gordon, in mak-
ing this announcement, encouraged people to volunteer to assist the cadre who presently make these track events safe and successful. Merril
also put forth the suggestion that members step up to lead some one-day local drives during the next four months or so when we traditionally
expect summer weather.
My first introduction to Starke Shelby was shortly after I joined AROC in the mid-1990’s when I owned my 1987 Spider. He was most helpful in
finding an opportunity for me to insure that car with an “agreed value” through a collector policy, even though the Spider did not meet the exist-
ing guideline of being 25 years old. This allowed me to save approximately $500 annually compared to the price quoted by my standard automo-
bile insurance company. When I returned to Alfa ownership in 2004, I immediately insured both my 1974 Spider and the Zagato through
Starke’s recommendations – and at a total cost of around $300 annually.
Starke’s presentation brought many of us up-to-date on the world of collector car policies. He very carefully explained the differences of “book
value”, “stated value”, and “agreed value” – the three very different ways that insurance companies will traditionally use to determine how much
to pay in the unfortunate event that a claim is made. Most people are familiar with “Book value”, typically NADA Blue Book value. “Stated value”
is utilized with some policies where basically, the customer declares what the car is worth. The major shortfall of "stated value" is that the com-
pany holds the option of paying either book value or declared value, whichever is less at their discretion. This works OK only some of the time.
Now that the economic down turn is in full swing, even the more reputable company's are not paying what they should, and this includes all the
major companies that advertise on T.V. “Agreed value” however, is established by the insured and negotiated with the company prior to policy
acceptance. Once 'agreed ' to by both parties to the insurance contract, the company must legally pay the "Agreed Value" in the event of a total
loss . An owner pays a set fee per $1000 of value plus liability. A second collector vehicle can be insured at a reduced rate because liability cov-
erage is only paid once for the policy.
Of course, there are always conditions, right? Starke told us of the basic conditions – there must be at least one daily driver for each insured
driver in the household, the vehicle(s) must be stored in a secured garage, and there are typically annual mileage restrictions. If these condi-
tions are met, a person simply completes an application, provides two color photographs of the vehicle(s) and a copy of the insurance paperwork
for the daily driver(s), and of course, the requisite check to pay the premium. Regarding the mileage restriction, Starke said the baseline is typi-
cally 3,000 miles per year with a 20% premium reduction for a 1,000 mile limit or an added 20% premium for a 5,000 mile annual limit.
Owners of newer Alfas should be aware that cars which are less than 25 years old CAN be insured with collector’s policies. Starke’s company
can also provide information on coverage for “pit and paddock” insurance for people who want to have their racecars insured while at the track,
though not ON the track.
Besides providing all-inclusive insurance for your daily driver, Starke and his associates represent four agents that specialize in collector policies
– Hagerty, Grundy, Heacock, and J.C. Taylor. I can tell you from personal experience that Starke will tailor your individual needs to the best
values in collector car insurance. Written by Gordy Hyde. To Contact Starke Shelby… 206 230 0203!

Once again, we had over a dozen NWARC members
present to compete for the coveted wood plaque tro-
phy, or a possible chance at a boxing nun puppet. The
added challenge this year was to see if John Barchasch could win for a stunning 4th year in a row. We had a
few people on their first time… Mark Colbert brought his Giulietta Sprint Veloce and a friend to navigate, Harry
Reed brought his son-in-law as a navigator, while Gordy Hyde brought the “ringer”, Cindy Rio to keep him on
course, and Kim and Rocco Buty joined in their Spider.
The event started with 308 cars heading out from the Skagit Valley Mall, with the first gimmick “question”, No
Hot Rocks Here… Answer: Cold Stone Creamery, followed by 38 more fun answers to goofy questions and an-
swers. The route took us all through the flat lands near the crowds and tulips, through LaConner, then south
across Deception Pass onto Whidbey Island. With the great weather and out-
standing scenery on these roads, suddenly winning wasn’t hardly even a goal.
Some stopped for lunch along the way in great little towns like Coupeville, or Oak
Harbor, or along the north side of Penn Cove. We finally found our way to the
Swinomish Casino for the finish after 100 miles and 4 hours time.
Though John Barchasch and his wife did another great job, win would not be
theirs… instead Harry Reed took the victory with only one missed answer. Gordy
and Cindy came in close behind with only 2 missed answers. It was one of the
best Rallyes thanks to great weather, cars, and an excellent group of people.

Alex at Book4Cars (see add below) has a copy of one of the
rarest post war Alfa books, “Il Portello.” Published in 1986, it is
an Italian language history of the Portello factory. It’s 2.5
inches thick. My guess is it was someone’s doctorate thesis. It
took me twenty years to find a copy. Alex is selling one for
around $150 if anyone is interested.

Real Racers - The Book
There are a few great books out there, and some better than others. Real Rac-
ers is a fantastic collection of stories supported by the fantastic photos from the
Klemantaski Collection. The book
covers the Formula 1 races of the
50s and 60s. The stories within
this book may send chills down
your spine when you think of the
lack of technology and the car con-
trol all came from the feet, hands,
and seat of the pants while the
competition was high. The fact that
as many lived to tell the tales is
amazing. The photos are stunning.
This book should belong to anyone
who loves the thrill of our track
days, any kind of racing, or the
passion of Formula 1 racing.

2011 Half Fast Lap of Washington
This year, our Alfa Romeo club is in for a treat on the Half Fast Lap of Washington. Our tour will
start by heading to Yakima, Toppenish, Zillah, and Walla Walla on the first day… which will end
with an evening at a local brewery. This is also Crush week so we will stop at a winery or two as
well. The second day will travel through the great roads, towns and history that is the Palouse
area, then end up near Soap Lake. The third day will wander a little more of the dry scablands
area before returning to the wetter side of the mountains. There is no excuse for our Eastern
Washington members to not join us for this great drive. We’re coming to you so don’t miss out…

our first annual Viva Italia gath-

be just as good, and perhaps
better. It’s almost a guaranty

plan to bring a camera, a lawn

The event is open to all Italian
makes… like Mike Leonetti who
brought both an Alfa and a Fer-

Winery / Ascentia Wines folks
have some great plans for us.
While our cars look great in the
sun, they will have the grill
open and will have sandwiches at discounted prices. They will also have wine tastings, dis-
counted wines, and perhaps a couple giveaways.
We will also be collecting food for Hope-Link, which helps support the Redmond Food Bank… so
try to remember to bring a donation of money or non-perishable food. Thanks!

PR Lapping Day WrapUp
No one can accuse the weather gods of being over kind to us on April 14th for our Pacific
Raceways Lapping Day. Though there were all the great faces there to help register, in-
spect, setup, teach, drive, and flag… the tone was set by the heavy rain clouds sitting
above all day. The Driver’s Meeting gave the rules, guidance, and weather warnings. We
started the day with wet tracks and light rain.
Some cars found their race tires a little too slick for the wet surface and waited out the
rain. By the third session, the track surface ws starting to dry and speeds were picking up
on both the straights and turns. The only challenge was that just as it started to dry, the
rain would come back for a few minutes.
By lunch time, the track was again starting to dry out. We all enjoyed great box lunches
and looked at the variety of cars. There were a number of Alfas including 2 GTAs that be-
long to Mark Colbert. The other car in large numbers was the Mazda Miata. They are a
constant reminder of what the Aresa factory should have busied itself building and what
Alfa should have sold around the world. Great job Mazda since they are enjoyed today by
the same type of passionate drivers who enjoy Alfa Romeos.
As the lunch break ended, the rain started back
up as we began our first afternoon session. The first car out was a silver Mazda RX8 with and in-
structor and followed by about 7 or 8 more cars. The warm up lap didn’t go well. While entering
Turn 5, the Mazda found the tire barrier and did some damage to the car, but the good news is no-
body was hurt. After the red flags, tow trucks, and bent metal was removed, a quick safety focused
drivers meeting, then the session was restarted. That did have a “dampening” effect on the drivers
the rest of the day.
Though that ended the fun day for the silver Mazda, and a couple others who didn’t want to push
their luck
on the wet
surface,
many peo-
ple stayed
and enjoyed some fun lap times. Fred Wright was
running his GTV on the track which was sounding and
looking good, when he got the chance to run with Tom
Nuxoll in one of Mark’s GTAs… that is fun to watch.
They looked good, but Tom takes no prisoners. The
GTAs extra power and lighter weight made quick work
of the GTV even though both are driven by talented
guys! Thanks for the show.
Thanks to all the people who attended, helped, drove,
and enjoyed the Lapping Day. We’ll fix the rain in
time for the next outing. Fred R

NWARC Corsa Meeting May 4th
There will be a Corsa Committee get-down-to-business meeting
on May 4th at 7PM. This is open to all members, though its not
always the most fun. This is our chance to talk about how we’ll
run, staff, and manage the lapping days, and schools through the
season. It will include working out logistics of supplies, volun-
teers, and more, plus make sure we are in compliance with rules
and guidelines.
