Conclusions• In this study, we evaluate the performance of the fast L1 minimization based
SRC methods for the motor imagery based BCI application.
• For this purpose, recent efficient L1 minimization tools such as homotopy and FISTA are applied into SRC scheme.
• We use two-class motor imagery datasets obtained from our motor imagery experiment and public motor imagery dataset.
• We have shown that the classification accuracy of fast L1 based SRC methods, SRC_homotopy and SRC_FISTA, clearly outperform SVM method.
• Also, the computational time of fast L1 based SRC methods is comparable to SVM.

Motivation & Goal • In the EEG based BCI field, the most widely used classifier is linear
classification method such as, LDA (linear discriminant analysis) and SVM(support vector machine).
• Only few study applied HMM based classification method for BCI application.
• In this study, I aim to apply HMM classification method for motor imagery based BCI systems.
• I will use CSP(common spatial pattern) and band power as feature extraction tool for classification.
• Finally, I will compare the classification performance of HMM with that of conventional LDA and SVM method using experimental motor imagery dataset.

HMM modeling• For each class, we modeled 2 state ergodic HMM with three gaussian mixtures
• I use the matlab HMM toolbox to model HMM
• Initial parameters are set to random values.
• Using EM algorithm, parameters are re-estimated:
• Using the forward algorithm (evaluation problem), likelihood value is calculated to determine which models are similar to test signal.

Conclusions• In this study, we apply the HMM classification for motor imagery based BCI
system.
• HMM clearly outperform LDA and shows similar accuracy with SVM
• We can improve HMM performance by optimizing the parameters
• For the running time, HMM is more slow than LDA and SVM
• For precise performance evaluation we need to apply more dataset.

Summary of 2013
Analyzed performance limits of joint support set reconstruction in the presence of noises.
• An upper bound on a failure probability is presented.
• Two sufficient conditions on M.
• A relation between M and S is established.
• A lower bound on the square of the smallest non-zero magnitude is established.

Achievement in 2013 | Summary of 2013 | Research Plan for 2014
The results are incomplete owing to below reasons.
Duarte13 • There is no noise.
• When we consider the presence of noise, their proposed algorithm does not work. So that their analysis is not correct.
Rao13 • A relation between M and S are obscure whenever sparse vectors are distinct.
• Evaluating their upper bound is NP-Hard
Nehorai10• There is no difference between its sufficient condition and that for support set
reconstruction.
• Evaluating their upper bound is NP-Hard as well.

Achievement in 2013 | Summary of 2013 | Research Plan for 2014
On the other hand, our results are summarized as follows:
Evaluating our upper bound is not NP-Hard, (e.g., it is easily evaluated)• Thus, it can be used as a performance criterion.
Based on one of our sufficient conditions, we realize that there is an inversion relation between M and S.• Note that this relation is valid even sparse vectors are distinct.
When S is sufficiently large, M > K is sufficient.• Note that Duarte13 also present it as their sufficient condition without the presence of
noises.
• Thus, we assert that increasing S reduces effects of noises.

Achievement in 2013 | Summary of 2013 | Research Plan for 2014
A lower bound on the square of the smallest non-zero magnitude is established.• Increasing the noise variance leads to increasing the lower bound
• Decreasing M leads to increasing the lower bound.

Dohono’s relation depends on the matrix dimension and cannot be used for finite size matrices
This motivated us to proposes a new (minimum) eigenvalue-based criterion
Our criterion is useful for finding the existence of a Gaussian matrix with a specific RIC,

• Expansion of laser beam, with beam expander which passes through the mirror.
• After the mirror, we can see the expansion on the SLM.
• SLM reflects back the light to the beam splitter.
• Light focuses on to the turbid medium through condenser and then to objective lens.
• We captured the response with the help of a high speed camera.

Basic idea: Suppose that each link fails with sparse probability. We can monitor all link statuses in a network with small measurements. We use multiplicative property of finite fields. We propose a recovery algorithm, and analyze monitoring performance.
Network Status Monitoring based Multiplicative Finite Fields
1 1 5 6y x x x
2 2 6 7y x x x
3 3 7 8y x x x
4 4 5 8y x x x
If any of links in a path fails, the measurement value is 0 due to multiplicative finite fields.

Summary of 2013
In the first semester, I took a course for the channel coding theory. From the course, I simulated the 4-ary LDPC codes, turbo codes and polar codes.
- I tried to apply some up-sampling DFT methods to the channel coding but it was failed.
For the stopping set analysis, some recursions to count certain graphs were developed. However, that is not exact and needs to be more studied.
- Jonson already proposed the method to get the approximate ensemble averages.
- We need to find another directions for the stopping sets.

I have completed MTIT project reports. I often got in trouble for the writing the reports since the MTIT report should written by Korean and the MTIT researches have been done by only Zafar.
- During the last year, some research of the new MTIT plan have not been done yet. I and Zafar have focused on completing the last paper.
- It is hard to proceed the project with writing reports by only one foreigner. We needs one Korean researcher to work together with Zafar.

Research Plan for 2014 Finding my research topic among them.1.Bayesian Compressed Sensing
- While conventional CS methods give only the estimated values of a x vector, Bayesian CS method gives Posterior Density Function itself over the x vector.
- Therefore, we could know the trust of each element of the x vector.
- It helps to calculate additionally needed length of measure vectors for guaranteeing estimate performance.
2.Random access technology
-In the random MAC environment where multi-users simultaneously transmit data to one receiver with specific probability, it can be interpreted that detecting which user transmits the data is the same as detecting the sparsity in CS.
