    MASONRY (MSRY)This is a list of the Masonry (MSRY) courses available at KPU.MSRY 1001 CR-1.5Masonry History and CommunicationStudents will describe the evolution of the bricklaying trade andwill identify major historical architecture. They will know the roleof the apprentice, business and labour organizations, and willrecognize the responsibilities of employers and employees.Students will also learn to identify employability and leadershipskills required in the bricklaying industry.

    MSRY 1005 CR-2.5First Aid and Safety in the Masonry TradeStudents will demonstrate the operation of forklift equipmentand concrete fasteners and powder-actuated tools. They willbe familiar with Workers' Compensation and WHMIS standardsand procedures. Students will be able to describe recommendedworking and safety practices in the masonry trade and willcomplete a certificate in first aid.Prerequisites: MSRY 1001

    MSRY 1010 CR-3Materials in the Masonry TradeStudents will describe and demonstrate the storage, mixing andapplication of the five types of mortar with respect to type of brickand block. They will identify the characteristics of mortar, brickand block. Students will demonstrate the construction of masonryunits, and will describe the development of mortar.Prerequisites: MSRY 1005

    MSRY 1015 CR-2Mortar, Grout, Layout and Construction in Brick MasonryStudents will demonstrate the appropriate use of mortar andgrout in the layout and construction of projects. They will use theappropriate blocks, stone, and bricks in layout and projects, andwill identify employability and leadership skills required in thebricklaying industry.Prerequisites: MSRY 1010Co-requisites: MSRY 1120 MSRY 1120

    MSRY 1020 CR-3Hand ToolsStudents will demonstrate competent use and handling of handtools in the brick masonry trade, including, levels, jointers,slickers, hand saws, mash hammers and chisels, pointing trowels,line pins and masonry line. They will also demonstrate safeprocedures in the handling of hand tools.Prerequisites: MSRY 1015

    MSRY 1025 CR-3Power Tools and Related EquipmentStudents will demonstrate use and handling of power toolsincluding masonry saws, cement mixers, power handsaws,grinders, power jointers, vibrators, compactors, and palette jacks.They will also demonstrate safe and effective procedures in theerection and dismantling of scaffolding.Prerequisites: MSRY 1020

    MSRY 1030 CR-1Basic Blueprint Reading, Estimating and LayoutStudents will demonstrate the ability to interpret building codesand symbols used in the brick masonry trade. They will alsodemonstrate their understanding of terminology and constructiondrawings to a level where they can proceed with the layout tocomplete a project.
