Doing your Bronze DofE
“The DofE is all about going the extra mile – gaining new skills, pushing yourself physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time, you’ll gather friendships, experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.
It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, as long as you’re 14 to 24, you can choose the activities that motivate you and go on your own personal journey. We know from other participants that the DofE helps you stand out from the crowd when you apply for college, university or jobs.” (www.dofe.org)
This information booklet explains what is involved in doing a Bronze
DofE Award with Hyndland DofE Centre. You will find information on our
outdoor education provider, Outlook Adventures Scotland Ltd; on costs
and payments; dates of DofE events; pages to help you plan your DofE
experience and your enrolment form and agreement.
Once enrolled, you will also receive a Welcome Pack which gives you
good advice on completing your award sections and on assessors’
reports.
You will also receive a DofE Reward Card which will give you reductions in
several outdoor activity stores.
When you begin in-school training you will receive a training booklet
that you will bring with you to every training session.
The DofE website www.dofe.org is another excellent resource for
finding out about the DofE awards, with downloads and suggestions for
activities.
There is a Kit List on www.dofe.org but we will advise you further on that.
ALL OF THESE RESOURCES ARE HELPFUL REFERENCES FOR YOU WHILE
DOING YOUR BRONZE DofE AWARD. PLEASE LOOK AFTER THEM.
DofE Expedition Induction Day
The Starting Point for your DofE training
Working in partnership with Outlook Adventures Scotland, the DofE Expedition
Induction Day is essential for any S3 pupil considering doing the Bronze award. It is more than just a taster. It is the starting point for your DofE expedition training.
You will learn expedition skills in the outdoors that in-school training can only imitate:
Using map, compass and land features to navigate a route in the outdoors.
Learning the 5Ds of navigation in the outdoors. Camp-craft: putting up a tent, assembling and using a Tranjia stove.
Participation on the Induction Day does not commit you to doing the Bronze DofE
Award, but it will help you and your parents make a better informed decision on whether you want to enrol and continue with the award.

In-school Training and Equipment There is no charge for in-school training or loan of equipment. However if a team damages or loses school expedition equipment through neglect or carelessness, the whole team will be asked to contribute to replacement
costs. The school can provide tents, cooking stoves, maps and compasses and some other equipment.
Expedition Training, Supervision and Assessment
Hyndland DofE Centre works in partnership with Outlook Adventures Scotland Ltd to organise DofE expeditions.
Outlook Adventures Scotland Ltd (OAS) activities are approved by
the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority and the DofE
Approved Activity Provider Licence.
OAS work closely with Hyndland DofE Centre to ensure that
Bronze DofE expeditions meet requirements for the award level
and provide an appropriately demanding experience for
participants.
OAS will arrange expedition locations; transport; logistics and First Aid cover.
OAS will supervise Bronze teams on two expeditions and will assess
Qualifying expeditions.
In the rare event that a team does not demonstrate sufficient expedition skills on their first expedition, they will undertake a second practice expedition. A qualifying expedition would then have to be arranged and paid for. Training at Bronze level is intensive. You will gain confidence in route planning, navigation, camp-craft, team work, how to look after yourself and your team mates, problem solving and the willingness to face the challenges of the great outdoors. The training you receive at Bronze Level will give you the skills and confidence to move on to your Silver and Gold Awards if you choose to do so.
In-school Training
Training with Hyndland’s DofE Leaders
It is essential that you attend in-school Bronze DofE Training
sessions.
The DofE expedition section relies on good team work. Good team work requires
good attendance, with every member contributing fully. It is also more fun and
more meaningful with everyone playing their part.
A register will be taken at DofE Training sessions and parents/carers will be
informed of any participant who misses training sessions if they have
been in school on that day.
Training Sessions will be held once a week on Wednesdays after school, from
3.15pm – 4.45pm. This will begin around the end of January. The date will be
finalised near that time.
Practice Expeditions take place during IDL week. There will also be a pre Qualifier outdoor training day at Pollok Park during IDL week.
Training always takes place on Wednesdays, which means that you may not be
able to participate in other Wednesday after-school clubs from late January to
mid-May. Speak to Ms Watt or Miss Lake to discuss unavoidable conflicts of time.
Activities covered in training sessions will be announced on Show My Homework.
Five steps to Completing the Expedition Section
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award EXPEDITION GUIDE
Preparation Participants plan an expedition. This includes team members, its aim, how they will travel and the
environment they intend to travel through.
Training Participants undergo training in expedition skills and their chosen mode of travel.
Practice expedition Participants must undertake sufficient practice expeditions to enable them to travel safely and
complete their qualifying expedition.
Qualifying expedition, debrief and presentation Once prepared, participants undertake their expedition, which will be observed by their Expedition
Assessor. On completion they will be debriefed by their Assessor and then prepare and give a
presentation, in any medium, of their expedition which covers their aims, experiences and outcomes.
Assessment The Expediton Assessor should provide their report for eDofE following the qualifying expedition and
reports should be provided by a person who saw their presentation.
Timescales for qualifying expeditions
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award EXPEDITION GUIDE
Level Duration Minimum hours of planned activity each day
Bronze 2 days and 1 nights At least 6 hours during the daytime (at least 3 of
which must be spent journeying)
Time associated with overnight accommodation and catering is additional to the minimum
daytime hours of planned activity.
Reasonable time for lunch and other appropriate breaks can be included within the hours of
planned activity.
30 minutes should be considered a reasonable amount of time for groups to plan for their lunch
stop.
Recommended environments
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award EXPEDITION GUIDE
General requirements
All expeditons should avoid villages and populated areas unless that is impossible. Long distance
footpaths should not be used, except in small sections to link up other paths. Teams should not aim
for more than 500m of height gain or descent on any one day.
Bronze
Normal rural countryside which can be familiar and local to the participants.
Team Presentations
The Final Part of your Expedition Section
In order to complete the expedition section of the DofE award, all participants must
deliver a presentation which will be closely linked to the expedition aim/team project.
It is entirely up to the team how their presentation is delivered – it can be in any
format that they choose. It should usually last about 10 minutes.
In Hyndland our teams have presented talks, backed by Power Points,
videos and scrap books among other formats.
Expedition projects have included film-making, scientific studies, team
morale observations, photographic projects, poetic responses to
landscape and recording wildlife seen on the journey.
The options are endless for project ideas and formats.
NOTE: if using video, make sure that our school technician can check it well in
advance of the presentation to ensure computer compatibility.
The presentation should include a reflective account of the expedition
journey and its experiences.
The presentation should bring the expedition aim to life,
making it more than just a report of the team’s project.
It should be based on the team’s own first hand
experiences, observations and investigations during their
expedition.
It should be in a format that inspires the team.
It should include a section on what members of the team have done for
their individual volunteering, physical and skills sections of the award.
Inclusion of a section on what each individual member has done for their
volunteering, physical and skill sections of the award gives a broader overview of how
much effort the participants have put in to achieving their award and how they have
helped others in doing so.
The Bronze and DofE team presentations are made at after-school gatherings soon
after return from the summer break. Parents and carers are invited to join us for
these entertaining events. Dates will be announced on Twitter, by text and other
available communication means.
Volunteering, Physical and Skills Sections
“Given the scope and breadth of DofE programmes young people may undertake activities that are not directly managed or organised by a DofE group, centre or Licensed Organisation. In such cases parents and guardians of those under 18 are responsible for ensuring that the activity
is safe and properly managed.” (www.dofe.org) All participants will receive a Welcome Pack. There is lots of advice for parents/carers and participants in the Welcome Pack that you will receive after enrolment. Remember to speak to your assessors at the start of your activities and keep your eDofE log up to date.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Hyndland Secondary School
In enrolling my son/daughter to take part in the DofE Award at Bronze level, with Hyndland
Secondary, I am aware of the many benefits to be achieved in doing the Award and I am also
aware of the level of commitment and personal responsibility involved.
I am happy to support my son/daughter in undertaking their award by encouraging them in
undertaking their Volunteering, Physical and Skills activities, gathering evidence and updating
their eDofE account.
I will take responsibility for ensuring that Volunteering, Physical and Skills activities
undertaken by my son/daughter are safe and properly managed.
I am aware of the cost of doing the DofE Award at the Bronze level and I am aware of
additional costs likely to be incurred.
I am aware that there will be no refund if my son/daughter does not complete their Bronze
Award, that the cost covers two expeditions and if deemed necessary, a further Qualifying
Expedition would have to be paid for.
I agree to pay the full amount requested by due dates.
I agree to return completed and signed consent and medical forms by due dates.
I will notify DofE leaders of any change in medical conditions that occur between return of
medical consent forms and going out on expedition.
