Why?
Practices need to use a validated decontamination process for impressions, as theresponsibility for ensuring impressions are cleaned and disinfected prior to dispatch tothe laboratory lies solely with the dentist. The diagram on the right shows thedecontamination process.
When?
If the impression appliance is heavily soiled then cleaning in an ultrasonic bath wouldbe suitable, however cleaning an impression in an ultrasonic bath, no matter howheavily contaminated, would probably result in the impression being distorted ordamaged.
Therefore the immersion method should be used:The impression is completely submerged throughout theentire contact time.Every surface of the impression is cleaned and disinfected.Less fuss, no need to keep checking if the impression is su!cently wet, simply set the timer and leave it to clean and disinfect.When using the immersion method use a product with a long working life and consult the manufacturer for correct product procedures.
How?
perform® ID is a powder concentrate, designed to be used in the immersion method. Its based upon active oxygen and specially formulated to respect the dimensional stability of impression materials such as alginates, silicones and polyethers. It has a long working life and an extremely broad range of effectiveness. A perform® ID timer, bath and roll of stickers are available.

Why?
To prevent infection, all dental instruments that are laid out for each treatment should be systematically decontaminated after each procedure. All instruments or equipment to be reprocessed must be decontaminated with either an instrument washer or an ultrasonic cleaner.
Every dental surgery should follow a validated instrument decontamination process. Dental surgeries are able to quickly and pro*ciently decontaminate instruments in their own practice thanks to advancements in technology, such as washer-disinfectors & sterilisers. However sophisticated the decontamination process may have become it is still important that the right items are decontaminated.
When?
At what stage should an instrument be considered "dirty"?
All instruments set out for each patient are contaminated after the treatment whether or not they have been used.
The HTM 01-05 states that cleaning stainless steel instruments with an ultrasonic cleaner is the recommended method of mechanical cleaning. A washing-disinfector can also be used, when daily checking for detergent or rinse additive residue can be guaranteed.
However, it is always essential to check the appearance of instruments following cleaning to ensure the process is operating e#ectively.

Why?
Hands and forearms must be washed prior to and following each patient contact.Antibacterial based hand-rubs/gels formulated for use without water can be used onvisibly clean hands in conjunction with a good hand-washing technique for invasivedental procedures. Antibacterial-based hand-rubs/gels can also be used instead of hand-washing between patients during surgery sessions.
When?
A cleanable poster depicting a six or eight step method (for hand hygiene) should bedisplayed above every clinical wash-hand basin in the practice.
How?
