The role of PEPFAR/NEPI in strengthening the health workforce

in Malawi

• Improve the quantity and quality, and relevance of nurses and midwives to address HIV epidemic and other health threats.

• Identify, evaluate, and disseminate innovative models and practices that are generalizable for national scale-up of nursing and midwifery education.

• Build local and regional partnerships to transform environment of practice for nursing/midwifery and for sustainability of the achievements.

Achievements of NEPI in Malawi and other implementing countries

• Increased number of nurses/midwives competent in delivery of high quality services for HIV.

• Built capacity of nursing schools by enhancing faculty skills, curricula, and experiences for students.

• Strengthened nursing and midwifery institutions.

• Advanced role of nurses/midwives.

• Enhanced partnerships with national, regional and global nursing/midwifery programs and other networks.
