Download - Impact of plastic - RJ Mantra
• Hello, I am E.ANUSH KUMAR of
R.J.MANTRA ENGLISH SCHOOL,
VIRUDHUNAGAR.
• I would like to share with you an incident which changed my whole attitude towards the usage of plastics in our daily life.
• Last year I visited the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve along with my parents. There I was thrilled to view the wild animals in their natural habitat.
• But I was shocked to see a deer lying dead, because it had eaten plastic bags.
• Later I noticed that the whole forest area was littered with plastic bags and pet bottles which were carelessly thrown away by the tourists.
• This sight made me very sad and disheartened.
• All these things happen because of the carelessness of our fellow humans.
• This made me swear that I will be more careful in using plastics in future.
WHAT IS PLASTIC?
• Plastic is a synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solid material.
•Plastics are polymers of high molecular weight.
•Polythene, Polyvinyl chloride, Polystyrene are largely used in
manufacture of plastics.
PROBLEM
• Most of the plastics do not decompose or some of them take at least 15 to 1000 years to degrade.
• The toxins released from them are also a serious threat to our environment.
• Non-degradable plastics accumulate at the rate of 25millions per year which fills up the land.
HOW DO PLASTICS DAMAGE?
• Plastics thrown on land can enter into drainage lines and choke them.
• Plastic wastes fill up the land and prevent seepage of rainwater into earth.
• Plastic wastes dumped into sea can affect marine wildlife.
• About 100,000 dolphins, whales and penguins die every year after ingesting the plastic wastes by mistaking them for food.
• Even in the forests, many wild animals die after consuming plastics or getting entangled and strangulated by them.
• Even after the decomposition of the dead animal, the plastic inside its body does not decompose.
• Thus it lies around the landscape where another animal may ingest it.
DESIGN to CHANGE
• The two best changes we can do are
* Use less plastics
* To reuse plastics when possible.
DESIGN to CHANGE
• Many products that come in plastic bottles are also available in glass bottles or tin cans.
• Use these whenever possible.
• Instead of buying bottled water, buy refillable water bottles.
• Paper, cloth & jute are most preferable substitutes for plastics.
DESIGN to CHANGE
• Do not forget to carry a cloth bag while going for shopping.
• Start saying a big “NO” to carry bags.
• Now I have reduced using plastics in my day to day life.
• Also I never litter anything carelessly.
• I am also spreading this message to my friends and relatives.
• I believe that this small effort taken by me will surely bring a big change in future.
• “Only small drops of water make up a mighty ocean.”
Community Service
Service we do in our school
• we are newly stared school, in our school we have a community service class. In this hour we are mainly concentrating to eradicate plastic and polythene bags pollution in our surrounding environment.
