In 1838, Sir Charles Wheatstone first described the process of STEREOPSIS: the process by which humans perceive three dimensions from two highly similar, overlaid images. Human eyes are approximately 50 mm to 75 mm apart — accordingly, each eye sees a slightly different part of the world.

For e.g.As we can see in the image on top The images on either side are pretty similar but slightly offset(see the line behind the woman’s head).

These two slightly different images enter the brain, at which point our brain functions to make up for the disparity between the two images. This disparity is “3D”.

By Use of Glasses, anaglyph, polarisation method, shutter lenses etc.
Without the use of Glasses, using Lenticular Screens.

ANAGLYPH Technique•Anaglyph is a fancy way of referring to the red-and-blue glasses we used to wear.
•Film is projected in two colors.
•Each eye gets an individual perspective and brain puts the 3D effect together.

Some Examples……

Take advantage of the fact that light can be polarized, or given different orientations.
One image is projected in a horizontal direction while the second isprojected in a vertical direction.
The corresponding glasses would allow horizontal polarization in one eye and vertical polarization in the other.

Requires you to keep your head still.
Tilting your head can distort how the waves get to your eyes, messing with the color and 3D effect.
Rotational polarity used.
The film being projected has two different spins to it
Clockwise in one eye, counterclockwise in another eye

Lenticular
Lenses•A lenticular screen is made up of a series of incredibly thin magnifying strips.

•The Directorate of forensic science laboratory in Kalina(Mumbai) has recently introduced a 3D technique for its ballistic investigation.
•This technology will help the police solve firearms-related offences faster and more efficiently.
•It works by taking digital pictures of the unique markings found on the fired bullets or cartridges
•Which helps in detecting the unique electronic signature of the bullet.“
•The images are then compared with the database of earlier ballistic evidences.

Though 3D technology has opened a new world of opportunities in movies, gaming and several other fields……. But still it has a long way to go, many problems still persist that are to be solved to make 3D easily accessible and usable in more and more fields.
In a nutshell, no matter what, 3D is here to stay and is the way to the future.
