P. Joachim Lepcha
The Ascension of the Lord
During this challenging time, we are
encouraged and supported by our family members, friends, and Church community to be a more optimistic people, and to live full of hope. The feast of the Ascension of Lord brings a deeper understanding of faith, hope and joy. Saint Paul prays, “May God enlightened the eyes of your mind so that you can see the great hope to which he has called you.” (Eph. 1:18). This hope impels us to make our earthly life as a kind of foretaste of the immortal life; therefore, the feast of the Ascension is all about knowing that we are destined to a life beyond the one which we now enjoy and to be with God in a union which cannot be destroyed by death.
Christ’s mission was not just to give us hope for
the future but also to change the quality of life here and now so that we may begin to experience already the riches of the eternal life to come. Jesus entrusted this mission to us when He said to his disciples, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all creation.” (Mk. 16:15) It is this mission that the angels urged the Galilean, instead of “standing there looking up at the skies.” (Acts 1:10) We make it happen by witnessing to the Good News of Jesus Christ through word and deed.
On the day of his ascension, Christ’s personal
ministry on earth ended, but the operation of the Holy Spirit on his followers to continue his ministry began. The time for preparing his apostles for their participation to build his Church was over, but the time for participation in the expansion of that Church began.
Jesus taught us lessons of Faith, Hope, Love,
forgiveness, mercy, and salvation by his life and preaching; and He gave us the mission to teach these to others. Hence, let us learn about Jesus and his teachings from our daily study of the Bible and the teachings of the Church. Let us experience Jesus in personal prayer, reception of the Sacraments and works of charity, so that we may convey that same Jesus whom we have experienced with the help of the Holy Spirit to others.
By His Ascension, Christ has not deserted us but
has made it possible for the Holy Spirit to enter all times and places. In this way, it is possible for each of us to be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit into agents or instruments of Christ.
Fr. Joachim Lepcha

Today as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension we are reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through his disciples… and now through us.
When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives, and into the hearts of those who are poor.
