IB certificates in teaching and learning
The international symbol of excellence
All teachers transform theory into practice, but IB teachers go beyond.
Grounded in a global mindset, IB educators are catalysts for infusing
higher-order thinking skills into a new generation of learners and leaders.
Educators draw on the IB’s highly acclaimed, research-based curriculum to
prepare students for global leadership roles.
IB World Schools often recruit teachers who have prior IB teaching
experience, leaving those without IB teaching experience fewer
employment opportunities in IB schools. To empower educators to
become part of the growing network of IB educators, the IB partners with
universities and institutions to offer the IB certificate in teaching and
learning and the advanced certificate in teaching and learning research.
The IB educator certificates are professional certificates that complement
your academic qualifications and signal to school heads that you are
capable of teaching in an IB World School.
The IB’s highly acclaimed,
research-based curriculum will
encourage you to think critically
and develop open-mindedness
and respect for individuals and
the world at large.

examine the principles and practices associated with one of the four IB
programmes—Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme
(MYP), Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Career-related Certificate
(IBCC). The courses that lead to this certificate shape pre-service, new and
experienced educators into reflective practitioners and teacher researchers.
If you want to develop your understanding of the IB programmes, you
might enroll in a course of study at one of our partner institutions.
“Little did I know how beneficial
it would actually be! Not to
mention how inspiring I found
this course in general while
also being beneficial for my
development, both personally
and professionally.”
Sam Ross, Zurich International

Please note that the IB certificate in teaching and learning (table on page 6) is

certificate encourage you to focus your studies on only one programme as you
work toward your IB certificate.

IB certificate in teaching and learning Fully Online Global Teacher Studies and Preparation: IB Primary and Middle Years Programs
The CSUSM School of Education, in collaboration with Extended Learning, is proud to offer the Fully Online Global
Teacher Studies and Preparation: International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years Programme.
In response to the overarching need to bring San Diego students an international perspective and deeper
understanding of people and their cultures to the classroom, CSUSM now offers courses of study recognized by
the International Baccalaureate. These courses develop teachers’ understanding of the principles and practices
associated with the IB Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme.
Candidates who successfully complete one of these courses of study are eligible to apply and earn the IB certificate
in teaching and learning. The program prepares San Diego area teachers (K-10) to serve in schools that implement
the IB curriculum.
Unique attributes of course
We believe that teachers studying the IB philosophy and framework need time to bring these strategies and lesson
ideas into the classroom. For that reason, the CSUSM IB Teacher Certificate is designed to combine theory with
practice as each class has two units of field study to complete in the candidate’s school or a cooperating school in
their local geographical area.
Our program faculty are IB K-12 teachers and IB program coordinators. With their knowledge and the convenience
of the online program, the CSUSM program can meet the needs of all aspiring IB teachers.

University was established with the Faculty of Arts and Education and Faculty of Agriculture, based on the belief
that “Agriculture is the foundation of a nation.” Since then, the University has made steady progress along with

number of subjects available grew with changing social needs and the acceleration of growth, and the University
has changed to respond to social development.
