FRANCEFrench wine is produced all throughout France, in quantities between 50
and 60 million hectolitres per year, or 7–8 billion bottles. France is one of the largest wine producer in the world. French wine traces its history to the
6th century BC, with many of France’s regions dating their wine-making history to Roman times. The wines produced range from expensive high-
end wines sold internationally to more modest wines usually only seen within France such as the Margnat wines were during the post war period.
France is the source of many grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot noir, Sauvignon blanc, Syrah) that are now planted
throughout the world, as well as wine-making practices and styles of wine that have been adopted in other producing countries. Although some
producers have benefited in recent years from rising prices and increased demand for some of the prestige wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux, the
French wine industry as a whole has been influenced by a decline in domestic consumption, while internationally, it has had to compete with
the increased success of many new world wines.

If California were a separate country, it would be the world’s fourthlargest wine producer. The state’s viticultural history dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first
vineyards to produce wine for Mass.
Today there are more than 1,200 wineries in the state, ranging from small boutique wineries to large corporations like E & J Gallo Winery with
distribution around the globe.

CHILEChilean wine is wine made in the South American country of Chile. Chile
has a long viticultural history for a New World wine region dating to the 16th century when the Spanish conquistadors brought Vitis vinifera vines with them as they colonized the region. In the mid-19th century,
French wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère and Cabernet Franc were introduced. In the early 1980s, a renaissance began
with the introduction of stainless steel fermentation tanks and the use of oak barrels for aging. Wine exports grew very quickly as quality wine
production increased. The number of wineries has grown from 12 in 1995 to over 70 in 2005.
Chile is now the fifth largest exporter of wines in the world, and the ninth largest producer. The climate has been described as midway between that of California and France. The most common grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenère. So far Chile has remained free of phylloxera louse
which means that the country’s grapevines do not need to be grafted.

Port wine (also known as vinho do Porto, Porto, and usually simply port) is a Portuguese fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It is typically a sweet, red wine,
often served as a dessert wine, though it also comes in dry, semi-dry, and white varieties. Under European Union Protected Designation of Origin
guidelines, only the product from Portugal may be labelled as port or Porto.
Sherry is a fortified wine made from white grapes that are grown near the town of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain. The word “Sherry” is an anglicisation of Xeres (Jerez). Sherry was previously known as sack, from
the Spanish saca, meaning “extraction” from the solera. In Europe, “Sherry” has protected designation of origin status, and under Spanish law, all wine labelled as “Sherry” must legally come from the Sherry Triangle, an area in the province of Cádiz between Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda,
and El Puerto de Santa María.
