Red Ci.oui needs more businesshouses. To our certain knowledgethere have been at least a dozen bt.si-nc- ss

men compelled to go elsewhere, who would have located here had

theie been plenty of business housesfor rent.

Hurrah! Moih.art & Fulton, thehardware merchants are now in theirnew brick store, where they are pre-

pared to sell you good iu their linecheaper than ever before known in

Red Cloud. Call and sec them in theirnew headquarters.

The Chief has received the firstcopy of the Indiauola Time$. a spicypaper published by Lathrop & Wat-kin-s.

The paper will be a welcomevisitor to our sauctum, Mr. Geo.Watkins. formerly of Blue Hill, is theWat kins of the firm.

We thought we should have to go toKansas this week after candidates (forsheriff, but since our last issue we findthat there are some few candidatesleft in Nebraska, and in that connec-tion we learn that Tho. J. Wright, ofIndian Creek, is a candidate for thatoffic . Who will be next one ?

We understand that an effort isagain being made to put in a telephoneexchange in Red Cloud. The Nebras-

ka telephone Company having refusedto come up to their contract, effortare now on foot to build one on thesame scale of Hastings. We hope thiswill be dore, as an exchange would bea paying investment in Red Cloud.

The people of Red Cloud who rideand drive hordes at a speed that isabsolutely dangerous, should be arrestcd and fined, and Marshal Watsonshould see that it is stopped. Manytimes it is actually unsafe tor pedes-

trian to be on the street (or fear ofgetting run down by some one makingthe dust fly bv seeing how fast theycan ride.

The las', republican administrationpaid off About 1475.000,000 of the pub-

lic debt. Up to the present time therehas not been a cent of the debt paidby the democratic administration, while some of the "reformers" arecackling over a reduction on paperduring the last two months of about$11,000,000. The average of the re-

publican partv for the last four yearswas nearly $10,000,000 a month. In-

dianapolis Journal. It gives us great pleasure to know

that the democrats of Webster countyunanimously endorse Mr. PriuShett forUnited States district attorney. Thisis the more gratifying Iecaue onlytwo democrats in that county knowMr. Pntchett personally. On of theseis a Jim Laird democrat and railroadattorney, and the other is the editorof the Helmet, who has been endorsedby Dr. Miller, and endorses anybodynhora theBsKtor recommends- - J55f.

but generally the awarding commit- -tees of agricultural societies are thosewho know but little of the stock to bepassed upon. However Mr. Hosfordwas fortunate in taking second honorsover so many competitors.

One thing that has been sadlyneglected in the vicinity of Red Cloudis the public highways, there seem tobe no system for working them. In-

stead of a gang of men going out andworking in vicinities adjacent to the irfarms, they go here and there and con-

sequently the high hills and deep cutsare not often graded to any advantage. The making of roads and keeping themin order is what is needed, and everyoverseer of highways should tike agang of men and do the work

merely to put in time butto do good work in the rarae manneras if they were doing it for themselves. The roads should be worked in sec-tions according to its needs and work-

ed good.

Don't forget that we now have 40.0001 year old apple trees, 2 feet and overconsisting of 35 different vartetie ofapples Please examine our stockbefore buying elsewhere.

This decision is certainly an injus-

tice to the county e'erk, although itmay come wilhing the pale of the law.from the fact that the county clerkhas to spend his time and money tomake this list out, and does not re-

ceive one iota from the county for sodoing. The law should be amended sothat the clerk would receive pay for

all labor rendered. The county orstate should not expect it officials towork gratuitously anymore than an in-

dividual would expect it of his hiredhelp. The decision is in accordancewith the statute, but it is certainly notequitable. This decision ends a con-

test that ia of interest to every countyclerk in the state of Nebraska.

thing that is needed in Red Cloud itis a bridge aero the Republican riverand The Cim:r believes that if theproposition was again put before the

Leopl0 there would be no trouble inharmonizing and voting bond for onek.mh1 bridge at or near the sito of theold one Let ome one of our citixenaget up a petition and circulate forsignatures and then present lhe rnat-t- o

the county commissioners. Thereis no sense iu quibbling over thematter of one or two bridges what is

wanted i a good substantial crontngover the Republican river near RedCloud and the peoplo should willinglyaid and vote for the withoutany bickering one wny or tho otherThe "I shan't play" policy i a verypoor one. There should only be onesentiment expressed and that shouldbe the advancement of Red Cloud.Let's have peace and a good bridge atonce and Red Cloud will take a newboom for prosperity.

Home Enterprises. The people ofRed Cloud should do their beat topatronize and uphold home enter-prises. Such things build up a townand make it prosperous. If .he peoplewould all turn out and do their tradingiu outside towns just because thingscould be purchased a little cheaper, there would be no Red Cloud in thedim future, and no enterprise wherenow are many. One must expect topay a little more for articles at homethan they do eleewhere, from the factthat it costs more mmitj to get themhere, but if that w not true if youspend your money at home it stayshere and help build up the town, butif you send it to Lincoln or Omaha, itbreak down onr own enterprise aodbuild up those of other town. Thisshould not be. Let every man, woraand child bear in mind that whateveris done in Red Cloud is that much toward making her a prosperous city. Itis a very poor principle to go cot oftown for anything that cm be pur-chased at bosjae. Let tne readers ofTit Chief reaesBber tae oU saottowhich i applicable at al! tiasea.'dome Int. last, and all th time."and the future of Red Coud will be

i unquestionable.
