CUBA FACTS
Issue 64
Cuba Facts is an ongoing series of succinct fact sheets on various topics, including, but not limited to, political structure,
health, economy, education, nutrition, labor, business, foreign investment, and demographics, published and updated on a
regular basis by the Cuba Transition Project staff.
Human Rights Violations in Cuba
Jennifer Hernandez*
Since the Obama Administration began secret negotiations with the Castro regime in 2013, there have been over 13,000 political
arrests in the island.
The Cuban Commission for Human Rights and Reconciliation (CCHR) recently released its data of documented and confirmed
political arrests for the year 2014. It is suspected, however, that there are more that remain unknown.
In 2014, there were 8,899 short term political arrests in Cuba recorded by the CCHR. That is more than quadruple the amount of
arrests in 2010 (2,074) and close to a 40% increase from 2013 (6,424).
2
With the current publication, detailing arrests during October – December, 2014, ICCAS initiates a quarterly report on Human Rights
Violations in the island. We will publish this report every three months.
October 2014
The following report compiles information of Cubans arbitrarily arrested and/or detained and experienced harassment, physical
aggression, acts of vandalism and/or acts of repudiation* in Cuba in the month of October 2014. This information is based on the
monthly report published by the Comisión Cubana de Derechos Humanos y Reconciliación Nacional (Cuban NGO specializing in
Human Rights) as well as other sources in the island.
Summary
*Acts of Repudiation are physical and/or verbal aggression mobs organized by State Security (Cuba’s political police).

arrests for political reasons.
