Hymn: TiS 141
1. Praise to the Holiest in the height,
and in the depth be praise:
in all his words most wonderful,
most sure in all his ways.
2. O loving wisdom of our God,
when all was sin and shame,
a second Adam to the fight
and to the rescue came.
3. O wisest love, that flesh and blood,
which did in Adam fail,
should strive afresh against the foe,
should strive and should prevail;
4. and that a higher gift than grace
should flesh and blood refine,
God’s presence and his very self,
and essence all-divine.
5. O generous love, that he who
smote
in Man for man the foe,
the double agony in Man
for man should undergo,
6. and in the garden secretly,
and on the cross on high,
should teach his friends, and thus
inspire
to suffer and to die.
7. Praise to the Holiest in the height,
and in the depth be praise:
in all his words most wonderful,
most sure in all his ways.
John Henry Newman
1801–90 alt.
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose
their life for the sake of the gospel will save it. Mark 8.35
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
5
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant)
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria – Ushaw Setting (Alan Rees)
CHOIR: Glory, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest,
ALL:
and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
7
Prayer of the Day
God of mercy, help us to forgive as you have forgiven us, to trust you, even
when hope is failing, and to take up our cross daily and follow you in your
redeeming work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: WISDOM 7.26-8.1 26
For she is a reflection of eternal light, a spotless mirror of the working of
God, and an image of his goodness. 27
Although she is but one, she can do all
things, and while remaining in herself, she renews all things; in every
generation she passes into holy souls and makes them friends of God, and
prophets; 28
for God loves nothing so much as the person who lives with
wisdom. 29
She is more beautiful than the sun, and excels every constellation
of the stars. Compared with the light she is found to be superior, 30
for it is
succeeded by the night, but against wisdom evil does not prevail. 1She
reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other, and she orders all
things well.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
8
Psalm: 19:7-14
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul:
the command of the Lord is true, and makes wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart:
the commandment of the Lord is pure, and gives light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endures for ever:
the judgements of the Lord are unchanging, and righteous every one.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold:
sweeter also than honey, than the honey that drips from the comb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant taught:
and in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can know their own unwitting sins?:
O cleanse me from my secret faults.
13 Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the mastery
over me:
so I shall be clean, and innocent of great offence.
14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be
acceptable in your sight:
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
Second Reading: JAMES 2.18-26 18
But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith
without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 19
You believe that
God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder. 20
Do you
want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith without works is
barren? 21
Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered
his son Isaac on the altar? 22
You see that faith was active along with his
works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. 23
Thus the
scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned
to him as righteousness’, and he was called the friend of God. 24
You see that
a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25
Likewise, was not
Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the
messengers and sent them out by another road? 26
For just as the body
without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 187
1. Let all creation dance
in energies sublime,
as order turns with chance,
unfolding space and time,
for nature’s art
in glory grows,
and newly shows
God’s mind and heart.
2. God’s breath each force unfurls,
igniting from a spark
expanding starry swirls,
with whirlpools dense and dark.
Though moon and sun
seem mindless things,
each orbit sings:
‘Your will be done.’
3. Our own amazing earth,
with sunlight, cloud and storms
and life’s abundant growth
in lovely shapes and forms,
is made for praise,
a fragile whole,
and from its soul
heaven’s music plays.
4. Lift heart and soul and voice:
in Christ all praises meet
and nature shall rejoice
as all is made complete.
In hope be strong,
all life befriend
and kindly tend
creation’s song.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet
our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 8
beginning at the 27th
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
27
Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on
the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ 28
And they
answered him, ‘John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of
the prophets.’ 29
He asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter
answered him, ‘You are the Messiah.’ 30
And he sternly ordered them not to
tell anyone about him. 31
Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man
must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests,
and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32
He said all
this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33
But
turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind
me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human
things.’ 34
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any
want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their
cross and follow me. 35
For those who want to save their life will lose it, and
those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save
it. 36
For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their
life? 37
Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38
Those who are
ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of
them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his
Father with the holy angels.’
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)
The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)
{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us]
Offertory Hymn:
TiS 194
1. O love how deep, how broad, how
high!
it fills the heart with ecstasy
that God, the Son of God, should
take
our mortal form for mortals’ sake.
2. He sent no angel to our race
of higher or of lower place
but wore the robe of human frame
himself, and to this lost world came.
3. For us he was baptized, and bore
his holy fast, and hungered sore;
for us temptations sharp he knew;
for us the tempter overthrew.
4. For us he prayed, for us he taught,
for us his daily works he wrought,
by words and signs and actions, thus
still seeking not himself but us.
5. For us to wicked hands betrayed,
scourged, mocked, in purple robe
arrayed,
he bore the shameful cross and
death;
for us at length gave up his breath.
6. For us he rose from death again,
for us he went on high to reign,
for us he sent his Spirit here
to guide, to strengthen and to cheer.
7. To him whose boundless love has
won
salvation for us through his Son,
to God the Father, glory be
both now and through eternity.
Attrib. Thomas à Kempis 1379–1471
tr. Benjamin Webb 1819–85 alt.

as a living sacrifice
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN

Final Hymn: TiS 282
1. The voice of God goes out to all the world;
his glory speaks across the universe.
The great King’s herald cries from star to star:
‘With power, with justice, he will walk his way.’
2. The Lord has said, ‘Receive my messenger,
my promise to the world, my pledge made flesh,
a lamp to every nation, light from light’:
with power, with justice, he will walk his way.
3. The broken reed he will not trample down,
nor set his heel upon the dying flame.
He binds the wounds, and health is in his hand:
with power, with justice, he will walk his way.
4. Anointed with the Spirit and with power,
he comes to crown with comfort all the weak,
to show the face of justice to the poor:
with power, with justice, he will walk his way.
5. His touch will bless the eyes that darkness held,
the lame shall run, the halting tongue shall sing,
and prisoners laugh in light and liberty:
with power, with justice, he will walk his way.

Leonie Bird is a currently studying theology and ministry through the
Trinity College Theological School and the United Faculty of Theology.
As part of the subject “Leadership, Teaching and Community Building”
she is required to undertake a short exercise within a Christian
community context. The exercise requires 10 to 12 volunteers to
participate in one short discussion session (about 1 hour) and provide
feedback and responses to the discussion. The topic set for discussion is
“Asylum Seekers” The assistance of members of a Christian community
would be invaluable.

Congratulations: to Nilmini Wickramasinghe who is presenting a paper at
Harvard this week.
Archbishop's statement on marriage; Abp Dr Philip Freier has stated that
the Melbourne Diocese will not be issuing new marriage vows as the 2
most prayer books (AAPB -1978 and APBA -1995) give a clear expression
of equality in the commitment to faithfulness within marriage. The older
prayer book (BCP - 1662) still has vows that require a wife to obey her
husband. The statement is in response to the Sydney Diocese proposing
vows where a wife promises to 'submit' to her husband.
