2 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 2, 2014
Strand Ward Altona North Newport Spotswood South Kingsville WilliamstownTake a drive past the Botanic Gardens and you will see the footpath and drainage works at Giffard and Osborne Streets have now been completed. If you head down that way, pop into the gardens. Our staff have done a great job clearing up after the recent storm event and its worth catching the clivia nobilis as it starts to flower. You may also want to take a wander down Shelley Beach. With the help of the Friends of Point Gellibrand, we have re-landscaped, planted native grasses, and added bench seats and bike racks for peoples convenience. The new footpath at J T Gray reserve is almost finished, following Maddox Road as it heads north up to Kororoit Creek Road. The footpath is now
operational with the only task remaining being the installation of bollards. This follows the completion of the Rifle Range footpath in May and provides a range of walking opportunities for visitors to the area. The Rodger Lane roadworks in Williamstown should be completed by the second half of July, weather permitting.
Loft Reserve PavilionFollowing a fire in 2013 the Council has been working closely with the insurers and builders to rebuild the pavilion at Loft Reserve. The users of the facility, Altona Roosters Rugby League Club and West Newport Cricket Club, are currently being accommodated in portable buildings located on the site.
The rebuild works are due to commence shortly with an expected completion date of December 2014, all things going to plan.
Newport Althletic Track The design of the extension to the Graeme Morrish Pavilion has now been completed and we are seeking tenders for its construction. The extension of the pavilion involves the provision of a new 190m2 room with an additional 70m2 of storage. Once completed, well have a flexible community space that can be used for a range of purposes including meetings, presentations, seminars, training sessions and social events. Tenders close on 7 July.
Cherry Lake Ward Altona Altona Meadows Altona North Brooklyn SeaholmeTheres good news for Altona City Soccer Club with new turf laid at Kim Reserve in time, coincidentally enough, for the World Cup. A great deal has been happening over the last few weeks with our local SES unit celebrating a name change, and the Global Homework program being officially launched at Altona North library. The first, with SES Altona becoming SES Hobsons Bay, it will better recognise the efforts of our volunteers and the area they cover. The second is a great initiative for students who want to enhance their learning potential. World Environment Day took place on 5 June and to recognise this, children from Altona North Child Care did a great job picking up litter at Irwin Reserve. Well done to everyone involved.
ALGA ConferenceIn June, Mayor Cr Sandra Wilson and Crs Carl Marsich and Paul Morgan attended the annual National General Assembly for local government, one of the key sector gatherings of the year. Measures were discussed on how to assist our community and local workers in adjusting to the changes in the manufacturing sector. The Mayor Cr Wilson asked the Federal Minister for Environment Greg Hunt MP how the National Clean Air Agreement, (scheduled to take place on 1 July 2016), might bring tangible improvements to air quality for the people of Brooklyn. Having access to Ministers, Shadow Ministers and Ministerial Staff is important in getting our issues on the Federal agenda.
Two Hobsons Bay residents, Geoff Mitchelmore and Bert Boere, have campaigned for improving odour and dust issues around Brooklyn and they were recently made EPA environmental citizens for their efforts.
Altona Coastal ParkNational Tree Planting day will soon be here. Last year we had about 110 people turn up to Newport Lakes including students form Mt St Josephs College in Altona. This year at Altona Coastal Park we will be planting gahnia filum (chaffy saw sedge) to provide habitat for the Altona Skipper butterfly. Its good entertainment for the whole family with former tram conductors the Connies troupe providing entertainment.

Wetlands Ward Altona Meadows Laverton Seabrook You may have seen the new interpretive signage at Laverton Stormwater Harvesting. If not, take a trip down there. The project has successfully transformed vacant grassland into something that is both attractive and a valuable community asset. The treated stormwater will be used to irrigate the reserve in Altona Meadows and recent water quality testing has found the water quality to be good with low salinity levels. Also you may have received a newsletter recently in your postbox about the New Residential Zones. The Council is currently preparing background work to apply the new zones across the municipality and there will be extensive community consultation during this time. If you want to find out more, take a look at the Councils website:
www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/newzones.
Seabrook community centreMay and June saw Seabrook community centre increase its range of programs including a new Monday evening session of pilates and a Chinese speaking mums group for parents of young children. Events coming up include a balloon art workshop and a mini-Picasso creative art program for primary school aged children. There is also a paediatric first aid course on Saturday 19 July for parents and carers of babies and young children. Details can be found at www.seabrookcc.com.au. Seabrook is one of nine community centres in Hobsons Bay which offer a range of programs and activities including art,
craft, fitness, recreation, leisure, training and meeting spaces for hire. More information about the nine centres can be found at the Councils website.
Lohse Street reserveWe are currently finalising construction plans for the redevelopment of the Lohse Street Reserve. The final plans include a picnic shelter, a new pathway, landscaping works, a sensory garden and public lighting. Once the plans have been finalised, we expect construction to begin in the coming months. Works on the Stage Two upgrade of McCormack Park meanwhile have begun and the playground renovations should be d by September.

A hot lunch is something most people take for granted, but for Tommy Moyal its a blessing.
The 51-year-old, who lives in a campervan in Hobsons Bay, attended last Wednesdays three-course lunch served by volunteers at Laverton Community Centre and Neighbourhood House.
He said the lunch, for which concession cardholders are asked to give a $5 donation, provided a break from his lonely life.
Some days are like hell on wheels for loneliness.
Mr Moyal said he travelled to Laverton for company as much as food.
I get a bag of food now and then from the good people like the Church of Christ in Williamstown, from Minister Megan Jung at Helping Hand I have lunch there as well.
Without these places, I have no friends. Im on my own, basically, so I live like a hermit.
Usually, I eat dried food in the van: canned food and a sandwich or whatever.
[Wednesdays lunch] was like a blessing to sit down and have a 20-minute yak with two people sitting beside me.
Unfortunately, I didnt have the $5 donation; I had a free lunch with the help of the Williamstown people.

Senator rides into CanberraBy Benjamin Millar
Footscrays Greens senator-elect Janet Rice has vowed to be a voice for Melbournes west in the nations capital.
Ms Rice arrived in Canberra on Tuesday on a bicycle, having ridden through regional Victoria on a two-week listening tour.
The former Maribyrnong mayor told Star Weekly her time on council would stand her in good stead in a Senate where neither major party holds the balance of power.
She and other new senators will be sworn in later this month.
Ms Rice says her focus will be on bringing attention back to environmental issues and highlighting the need for greater investment in public transport.
At the moment, about 80 per cent of motorised trips are by private cars, Ms Rice said. That needs to come down significantly, and to do that we need a lot more efficient and convenient public transport. We also need to make it safer and easier for people to hop on a bike for local trips, with more dedicated bike and walking paths.
Ms Rice will be the Greens spokeswoman for transport, infrastructure, forests and tourism. She said a recurring theme raised during her ride through Victoria was refugees and the need to celebrate Australias multicultural society.
I loved meeting a Burmese couple growing vegetables in a community garden on the Werribee River flats, and flying coloured balloons with the Bendigo community, proclaiming their support for a proposed mosque.
The Greens have 10 senators and one lower house MP, Melbournes Adam Bandt.

Tennis Victoria has warned that some clubs in
Brimbank face extinction following a council
proposal to increase fees, in some cases by
more than 1000 per cent.
Tennis Victoria and representatives of a range
of sports clubs met council administrators
last week to strongly object to the councils
dra sports facility hire, licences and leases
agreement policy.
Clubs will be charged fees of up to $2000 if
Clubs cry foul over fees

playing-surface fees.
At last weeks meeting, the clubs urged the
council to o er discounts for clubs that lease
venues from the council.
Tennis Victoria executive manager Ken Jacobs
said many lease-holding tennis clubs would
face an uncertain future if the inequitable
proposal was given the green light.
Tennis clubs in Brimbank are totally
reliant on volunteers to manage their clubs,
Jacobs said. ey do not, however, have the capacity
to generate the same levels of income as some
other clubs with gate takings .
Sydenham Tennis Club treasurer Stacie
Simon said her fees would skyrocket from $160
to $1498.Its a 1000 per cent increase for most clubs,
she said. Its not fair or reasonable .
Sunshine Baseball Club vice-president Rob
Browne said the club was in danger of folding
as it faced a $3800 annual bill on top of a $750
Baseball Victoria annual fee. Our numbers
will drop, well close our doors as a worst case
scenario , he said.
Clubs currently pay a at $160 annual fee,
raising about $7000 a year for the council.
Brimbank community well-being director
Neil Whiteside said a new shared approach
between the council and clubs was required.
e council spends millions of dollars on
maintenance [on these facilities], he said.
e council will consider a nal dra for
adoption at an upcoming meeting.

A dog that brutally mauled the face of a
six-year-old girl, leaving permanent scars and
ripping out a tooth, has been spared death.
In a May 27 hearing at the Ballarat

Stuart, Denise and Anthony Wilson, were
found guilty of owning a dog that caused
serious injury.

grandparents and uncle of the victim, must
pay nearly $12,000 for the dogs pound costs, a
$2 000 ne each and court costs.
However, the magistrate refused to sentence
Mack to death, leaving Moorabool council to
impose conditions for the owners before their
pet is returned to them.
In making his decision, magistrate Peter
Mithen took into account that the Wilsons had
no prior convictions and had a good standing
in the community . In a closed session on June 4, Moorabool
councillors voted to place restrictions on the
dog, including keeping it in a secure location
and having it muzzled when it is not working
and when there are visitors at the property.
Moorabool mayor
Paul Tatchell
said
community safety was paramount, which was
why the council vigorously pursued the matter
through the court .
is case should serve as a reminder to
animal owners to supervise their animals
properly, particularly if they mix with children.
e council had originally requested that the
dog be put down.
Current legislation is really wide-eyed when
it comes to working dogs , said Cr Tatchell.
We need to put a policy in place so we can
deal with working dogs. We live in a rural
region so the problem may come up again.
Moorabool council will now prepare a
contract to set out the exact conditions and
terms of Macks return. If the owners fail to
agree to the conditions within 14 days, Mack
will be declared a dangerous dog.

In 2009, Villawood made a request
to rezone the same land for a 650-lot
development. e lot sizes in the revised
plan are between 0.2 and 8 hectares.

Mr Costelloe said the number of lots

Runway projects take ight
By Xavier Smerdon
A new $28 million building at Werribee
Mercy Hospital is in danger of closing
just four months a er it opened because
of federal and state budget pressures.
e Catherine McAuley Centre is a
rehabilitation and geriatric medicine
complex built to cater for patients in
Melbournes west who are recovering
from surgery or serious injury.
e two-storey building, opened in
February, o ers an in-patient ward with
30 multi-day beds, eight two-bed rooms
and 14 single-bed rooms.
It also includes a gymnasium, meeting
rooms, sta rooms and o ces on the
ground oor.
But Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said
funding cuts to Mercy Health, which
runs the hospital, could close the new
sub-acute and rehab facility.
Mercy Health executive director
of health services Dr Linda Mellors
con rmed that federal funding for
sub-acute services in the new building
would end on June 30.
Were now waiting on our budget for
the next nancial year, she said.
e rehabilitation and geriatric
evaluation and management beds have
been full almost since we opened.
ese services were desperately
needed and Im certain the community
would be disadvantaged if they were no
longer available.
Ms Ryan said Mercy Health had been
hit with funding cuts of $29.4 million
over the next four years.
Mercy Health in Werribee has
well-trained and dedicated sta ; some
of the top experts in Victoria choose to
work at this service, Ms Ryan said.
But this makes their task so much
harder. Not only is there no new money
to fund for growth, it cuts expected
operation funding. is will have an
immediate impact.
is funding cut has the potential to
put the brand new sub-acute and rehab
facility under threat of closure.
A spokesman for federal Health
Minister Peter Dutton said health
funding to Victoria would rise from
$3.46 billion in 2013-14 to $4.69 billion
by 2017-18.
In regards to sub-acute beds, Ms
Ryan knows full well that was a one-o
funding arrangement, like many other
programs provided to the states, the
spokesman said.
Ms Ryan should explain why shes
attempting to mislead her constituents
and why Labor didnt make any funding
available in their forward estimates.
But Ms Ryan said that when
compared to Labors last budget, the
Abbott government
was investing
$3.2 billion less for public hospitals and
Wyndham residents could not a ord to
see health services go backwards.
Peter Dutton has very limited under-
standing about the health needs of this
community, she said.
Were a high-growth area that
requires further investment, not cuts.
Star Weekly revealed in May that
Werribee Mercy had missed out on
$85 million requested from the state
government for new operating theatres,
an in-patient unit, central sterile supply
department, and eight critical-care beds.

EXCLUSIVE
Babys legacy behind mums runBy Goya Dmytryshchak
A Seabrook woman whose daughter died in utero last July is helping other mums of angels by raising money for a charity close to her heart. Katherine Currie and her husband Steve will take part in next months Run Melbourne event in honour of their girl, Melinda.
In 2011, they lost their son, Jonathon Fulton, at 18 weeks gestation. Ms Currie said it took courage to fall pregnant again, which she did in October, 2012. It was a stressful pregnancy constant nausea and fear but Melinda grew perfectly and we were very excited for her arrival, with induction booked for July 26, 2013, Ms Currie said.
However, on July 17 she woke and didnt feel any movement in her womb.
We rushed to Werribee Mercy Hospital, where it was confirmed she had died. I couldnt believe it had happened again. I was induced that day and Melinda Grace Currie arrived silently at 8.45 that night.
I may be biased, but she was the most beautiful baby I had ever laid eyes on on par with our first-born daughter, Elianna.
Melindas death was caused by the umbilical cord being wrapped tightly around her neck and body.
The following weekend, Run Melbourne was on. Ms Currie watched the runners and decided to join them the following year in honour of Melinda.
Three weeks later she started training.Running became a release for me, an
opportunity to rebuild my body and my strength. In a way it helped me battle the feelings of failure and betrayal I felt about my body where my baby had died on my watch.
I was determined that Melinda would
leave a legacy of strength and inspiration, not breakdown.
Part of Melindas legacy is a program at Werribee Mercy Hospital where brothers and sister of babies who have died receive a soft toy to cuddle and love.
To continue Melindas positive impact in the world, Ms Currie and her husband will support the charity Rivers Gift, which raises money for SIDS research and awareness, was established in 2011 by a couple who lost their four-month-old son, River Jak Adam.
After meeting Rivers mum, Alexandra, in my online support group for mums of angels, I was so inspired by her and her husband Karls determination to build an amazing
legacy in their sons name, Ms Currie said. The loss of babies to stillbirth or SIDS is
such a taboo subject in society at large and as a result we can often feel isolated and ostracised, but through fund-raising events such as this we are given a platform to share our stories and honour our babies memories.
Ms Currie and her husband are also embarking to raise $4000 for a cold cuddle cot to be donated in Melindas memory to Werribee Mercy Hospital. The cots allow families to spend time with their stillborn or babies who othwerwise died.
In July 27s Run Melbourne, people can enter a 5-kilometre run/walk, 10-kilometre run or half-marathon.

If good things come in small packages then this detached two-bedroom Edwardian house runs true to form.
A small, manicured front yard complements its quaint weatherboard facade which has a green corrugated-iron awning, porch fretwork and lathed timber posts.
Entry into the hallway through a leadlight front door reveals polished floorboards and fretwork, a crisp white decor palette and high ceilings with stepped cornices.
The main bedroom (with robe) on the right sets the scene for this renovated house with its original cast-iron-and-mahogany fireplace and mantelpiece.
The second bedroom is slightly smaller and also has a built-in wardrobe. The laundry and a small bathroom with timber vanity unit and corner shower is also at the rear and there is a separate toilet. The laundry and a small bathroom with timber vanity unit and corner shower is also at the rear and the toilet is separate.
At the end of the hallway, a spacious living room introduces a second cast-iron-and-mahogany fireplace and mantelpiece.
To the rear is a kitchen with timber cabinetry, benchtops and breakfast bar, a Bosch dishwasher and free-standing cooker.
A white, timber-lined ceiling with a skylight above the kitchen brightens up
the entire adjoining meals area; this opens through a sliding door to a sheltered deck with views of an established courtyard garden lush, leafy and low-maintenance.
The private courtyard provides great surrounds for relaxed evening entertainment in the warmer months, and a small shed gives extra storage for those bulky items you cant get rid of.
Hydronic heating enhances the impact of the homes modernization and its location puts The Strand, Greenwich Reserve and the best elements of both Newport and Williamstown within easy reach.

A Home That Does Family With Flair
Highly sought after surroundings close to Mason Street shops, Newport Lakes Park, primary and secondary schools complement the exceptional family credentials of this inviting, impressively renovated home. Hydronic heating, period ceilings and polished floors reflect the skill and success with which post war origins and contemporary elements have been combined throughout a floor-plan that features a generous living area with bi-fold doors to a welcoming deck and landscaped rear garden. The central dining area and Caesar-stone kitchen add further appeal to a home offering up to four bedrooms, or three bedrooms and a second living zone if so preferred, served by two stylish bathrooms. Convenient carport puts the finishing to a fine family address.

A Superb Match Of Scope And Setting
A Newport pocket of huge demand and desirability enhances the appeal - and the potential - of this post war classic. Never previously offered, in the same hands since it was built, its three bedroom floor-plan currently includes a generous living room featuring gas heating, a central dining room and a separate kitchen where ample meals area and traditional cabinetry reflect the personality of well maintained proportions. Outside, tempting options for updating and extending, STCA, are complemented by north facing rear aspects in an address that surrounds itself with Mason Street shops, Newport Lakes Park, primary and secondary schools. Side drive parking and lock up garage complete a picture of originality - and an example of opportunity.
