ThethreeareasoftheStrategicDirectionsthatHSLhadthemostimpactinaretheareasofEngagement&Community,Teaching&Learning,andResearch&Scholarship.BelowarethemajoractivitiesandmilestonesthatHSLundertooktofosterthosegoals.

Ø RemodelingSpace:Creatingflexible,efficient,andinnovativefacilitiesforhealthscienceseducationandresearchprograms:7,200squarefeetoflibrarystaffspacewasremodeledintoalargeconferenceroomcalledthePacificRoomandcompletedinJune2015.

Ø HigherUtilizationofSpace:Forthesecondconsecutiveyear,HSLuseincreasedby7%overFY13-14duetopartnershipusesand24/7accessforhealthsciencesstudents.

Ø WorkforceTransitionsandNew&EmergingLibraryRoles:Severalretirementsandsubsequentnationalrecruitmentsamongacademichealthscienceslibrarianshadamajorimpactontheorganization.Staffengagedinrecruitmentsanddiscussionsabouttheroleofacademichealthsciencelibraries,technologyrolesandneedsinthefuture.WhatstandsoutmostisthattheHealthSciencesLibraryissharingmajoropportunitiestointegratecurriculumchangesandenterprise-wideclinicalinitiativesintolibraryroles.NikkiDettmarjoinedUWastheHealthSciencesCurriculumDesignLibrarian,andAndreaBalljoinedUWastheCareManagement&PopulationHealthLibrarian.JamieGraywashiredasthenewAssociateDirectorforAdministration&PublicServices.FrancesChujoinedasatemporarylibrarian.

Ø RRAINWashingtonMobileAppDevelopment:UWHealthSciencesLibraryreceiveda12-month$30,000awardfromtheNationalLibraryofMedicinetobuildaiOSmobileappforWashingtonStateESAR-VHPpersonnelandfirstresponderstoprovideaccesstoNLMresourcesandsituationalawarenessinformation.

Ø NewLearningEnvironmentFeatures:Brimmingwithcurrenttechnology,theCommonsconducteda3Dprintingpilotandcontinuedanexaminationpilotfor


severalhealthsciencesschools.Pilotingemergingtechnologyandonlinecurriculumrequirementsinoutdatedfacilitiesrequirescomplexanddetailedplanningstrategies.

Partnershipswiththecampus,communityandhospitalsserveasthefoundationofanewhubforintegratedlearningforclinicalcaredelivery,interprofessionaleducation,andinterdisciplinaryteams,withouttheconstraintsofphysicalprintcollectionsandinformationaccess.Usinganincrementalinvestmentstrategytotestnewtrendsandleverageresourcesfromschools,Centers,andclinicalenvironmentslocallyandintheregionisahighpriority.Reorganizingstudentlearningformodernhealthscienceprogramsisbothanopportunityandachallenge,asprojects’scopesandfacilityconditionsarenotconducivetosuccessfuloutcomes.

HSLStaffAreaRemodelProject

TheHealthSciencesLibraryrenovated7,200squarefeetoflibrarystaffspacetosolveproblemsofaginginfrastructure,stafffunctionsthatnolongerexist,andoutdatedspaceconfigurations–anddoingtheupgradeslive.PfeifferPartnersworkedwithTaniaBardyn,in2012,tosetoutthevisionforthenewDirector’sreinvestmentinitscorestaffspace,andthemodernresearch,clinicalandteachingworkplacewearepursuingincludinglayouts,officeandsupportspaceratios,andworkplaceresourcesforwork/life.HSLfast-trackedPhase1ofamulti-phaseproject,duetotheupcomingretirementofNanetteWelton,whichreducedcost,maximizeduptime,andsupportstoday’sprogramprioritiesinthehealthscienceslibrary.GiliMeerovichofPfeifferPartnerssetoutastakeholderengagementprocess,preliminarybudgeting,andswingspacestrategies.Inthecourseofthisproject,theUniversityintroducedsustainabilitygoals.Keystaffengagementstepsforsuccessaffirmedneedsvs.wantsandtheimpactanewenvironmentwouldhaveonnewhiresandfuturestaff.Fundamentally,thegoalwastopositiontheHealthSciencesLibrarystaffspaceforafuture-readyteaching,clinicalandresearchenvironment,tofosterinnovation,andimproveproductivitythroughcollaborativeworkspace.

PHASE1:

a) PacificRoom:

TheresultincludesthePacificRoom-a1,100squarefoot,technology-rich,multi-functionconferenceroomforlibrarymeetings,projectplanning,activelearningworkshops,andspecialevents.Theroomincludesneutralair,soundproofing,andvideoconferencingtoseatapproximately78people.ThePacificRoomisimmediatelyadjacenttothestudents’24/7accessentrydooronthelowerlevel.ThiscollocationwillallowHSLtodevelopfuturegoalsforexpandeduseandbetterintegratestudentstudyandlearningspacesforagroupwhoselearningneedsareconstantlyevolving.Thespacehasbeensetuptoaccommodatehalf-dayandfull-dayworkshops.

DuringconstructionofthePacificRoom,surface-mountedwiringwasmovedintotheceilingandthemasterlightswitchpanelwasmovedtothehallwayoutsideoftheroom.AnADAdoorwasinstalledadjacenttothePacificRoom.TheelectricalchangesandtheADAdoorimprovetheaestheticsandthefunctionalityofthestaffareas.

b) HSLAdministrativeSuite:

Dismantlingoffice-basedcubiclesanddevelopingflexible,open,andcleanspaces

inPhase1facilitatedtheadministrativesuitereconfiguration.Overthelast10years,thenumberofadministrativestaffhasbeencutinhalfattheHealthSciencesLibrary.Positionswerenotgoingtoberefilled;therefore,cubiclesweredismantled,aphotocopierroomwas

repurposedfortwoprivateofficesforfuturelibrarianpositions,andstaffmovedintoasharedofficespacewithprivateentrances.

T-228wasdividedinto3semi-privatecubicles.WaitingareafurnitureandartwereaddedtotheAdministrativeareatocreateawelcomingspaceandabilitytohostsmallofficeeventslikecoffeebreaks,farewellcelebrations,andfurtheradvancementefforts.

c) ILL&Print/ElectronicResources

InJuly2014Print&ElectronicResourcesstaffmovedinto900squarefeetofremodeledspacethatincludednewcarpetandabrightgreenwallinplaceofanolderwallthatpreviouslyhadanon-functionalwindowandslidingdoor.

ILLstaffmovedinto1500squarefeetofremodeledspace.Themoveconsolidatedstaffwhohadpreviouslyworkedin4differentareasofthelibrary,improvingefficiencyforthedepartment.

Thenewspaceincludednewcarpetandcubicledividers.

Phase2,fundingpermitting,willfocusoncreatingnew,moreefficient,workspacesforNNLM/PNRstaff.Phase3willcreateasmallstaffroomwithakitchenetteandachangingareaforstaffwhoexerciseduringtheworkday.

Public&ResearchServices1. Majoractivities,accomplishments,significantchangesandissues,grantsandgifts

Inadditiontorecruiting,theunitalsoventuredintothecreationofvideostosupportvariouslearningprojects.Videoswerecreatedandtestedforavarietyofactivitiesincludingmarketing,presentationcontent,andorientations.Expandingintothisarena,givesthedepartmentanopportunitytobegindevelopingsupplementarycontenttothemoretraditionalLibGuides.Additionally,severalmembersoftheteamwereawardedfundingfromtheNN/LMPNRtoexpandwritingcenterservicesattheHealthSciencesLibrary.Thefundingwillallowformoretutorhoursandspecializedtrainingtohelppreparetutorstoaddressspecificsrelatedtoscientificwriting.Theserviceshavebeenheavilyutilizedduringthefallandspringquarters.Thedepartmentisveryexcitedtobeabletoprovidetheseservicesforthecomingyeartoourusers.

2.MajoractivitiesandinitiativesanticipatedfornextyearandhowtheycontributetotheLibraries’StrategicDirectionsandfocusareas.

Thebiggestactivitiesforthedepartmentwillbehappeningonthecurriculumfront,whichtiesdirectlyintotheStrategicDirectionofTeachingandLearning.TheSchoolofMedicineissettobegintheirnewcurriculuminAugust.Withthesignificantchangeshappening,reflectedinthenewthemes,threads,blocks,anddesign,therewilllikelybenewexpectationsforhowandwherewesupportourstudents(Canvas).Thischangeisechoedinseveraloftheotherschools,eithercurrentlyundergoingorpotentiallyundertakingcurriculumchanges,suchasNursing,SocialWork,andDentistry.

TheUserExperienceDepartment’sactivitieshavebeenfarreachingandvariedforthelastyear.Thegrouphasparticipatedinorledanumberofinternalinitiatives.BelowisarecountofthemostimpactfulactivitiesandaccomplishmentsthroughJune2015.


• InAutumnQuarter,partneredwithOWRCtobringappointmentswithtutorsforwritingassistanceintotheHealthSciencesLibrary.Theservicewaswell-received,andwewroteandreceivedaMedicalLibraryPilotProjectawardfromNN/LMPNRtobuildoninitialsuccess.

• Conductedapilotprojectforstudentstotryout3DprintingintheHealthSciencesLibrary.

• Completedaninitialfirstyearofprovidingreference,education,anddocumentdeliveryservicestoNorthwestHospitalstaff.

• Pilotedayearofreservations(andcharging)forspaceinHSLRedArea.Becauseofnoiselevelsitwasnotassuccessfulaswehadhoped.Discontinuedfornow.

• CompletedthebuildoutofthePacificRoom,newspaceforHSLtouseforstaff.

• HostedtwoNationalLibraryofMedicinetravellingexhibits:theLiteratureofPrescriptionandNativeVoices.

• Lost50%positionthatwasreassignedtoPrint&ElectronicResources.

• Basedonuserstatistics,reservedSaturdaysforstudentuseonlyduringthesummerandclosedtothepublic.

• SubmittedasuccessfulSTFproposal.HSLreceived$66,208.55toreplaceworkstationsintheCommonsdrop-inareaandtheLibraryTeachingLab.

• Implementedanewprocessforwithdrawingrecordsformissingitems.

• Replacedthewaterfountainwithabottle-fillingfountain.ThisimprovementwasrequestedbynumerousstudentsintheUWLibrariestriennialsurveyandcompletesoneoftheobjectivesintheEngagement&CommunitysectionofHSL’sstrategicplan.

• DemonstratedHEALWAresourcesforInformationDeskstaffandarrangedforthemtohaveaccess.ThisallowsHSLtobettersupportourpartnersintheUWAffordableCareNetwork,oneoftheobjectivesintheEngagement&CommunitysectionofHSL’sstrategicplan.

• GatecountatHSLincreasedoverallby7%andthelowerlevel(whichisprimarilyafter-hoursaccess)by79%afteryearsofsteady,butsmalldecline.Weattributethistoopeningthelowerleveldoorsduringbusinesshours,greaterpublicity,anddevelopingamorewelcomingstudyspace.

Thisyearwemadeeffortstocontinuetoprovideaccesstoworld-classcollectionsattheUW.ThePrintandElectronicResourcesteamworkedincollaborationwiththePublicandResearchServicesdepartmenttoverify,priceandpurchaseeBooksandprintbooksfromone-timemoneyappliedforandwonbythreeoftheliaisonlibrarians.Thetopicsofthesebookswerefocusedonpalliativecare,translationalresearchandwriting.

TheHealthSciencesLibraryhastakenseveralstepstoexpandandimproveaccesstoonlineresources.InadditiontopurchasingtheaboveeBooks,thePrintandElectronicResourcesteamworkedwiththeHealthSciencesLibrary(HSL)WebTeamtodiscontinueCybertoolsastheA-ZjournallistandtopointuserstoPrimoA-Zjournallist.InanticipationofanHSLspecificA-ZeJournallist,thePrintandElectronicResourcesdepartmentdownloadedover2700eJournalRecords(MARC,XML)fromCybertoolsforfuturemigrationtoa“userfriendly”platformforuniversityclinicians,students,staff,researchersandfaculty.

PrintandElectronicResourceshasmadeanefforttoaligncollectionsandaccessstrategieswithcurrentandemergingUniversityneeds.AswiththeSuzzalloLibrary,theHealthSciencesLibraryhasbeenslowlyrunningoutofroominthebuilding.Inanefforttocreatemorespace,aplanforweedinghasbeenimplemented.However,priortoweeding,aSerialLabelingProjectneededtobeinitiated.Here,thePrintandElectronicResourcesteamcoordinatedtheworkflowandapplicationofover40,000classificationlabelstofacilitatefuturerelocationtooff-sitestorage.

OnJune15,2015,thePrintandElectronicResourcesdepartmentlostastaffmember.WithouttheLibraryTechnicianIII,theLibraryTechnician,Supervisorhashadtohandletheworkloadoftwopeople.Thisworkloadsupportstheinfrastructureofthelibrarybymaintainingnotonlytheelectronicresources,butalsothenewprintresourcesthatcometoHSL.WithoutthisinfrastructurethelibrarianscannotprovidetheservicestothevariedcustomersofHSLfromclinicianstostudentsoftheUniversityofWashingtonandUWMedicine.

Majoractivitiesandinitiativesanticipatednextyear,andhowtheycontributetotheLibraries'StrategicDirectionsandfocusareas.

Provideaccesstoworld-classcollectionsattheUW:

ToensurethattheeBookspurchasedwouldberelevanttoallusers,theteamislookingtoexpandtheHealthSciencesLibrary’sPDAservicefromRittenhousetobeopentothelargerUWpopulationinsteadofjustHSL.Assuch,UniversityofWashingtonatBothellandTacomaarebecominginvolvedinthisservice,especiallyastheyareexpandingtheirhealthsciencescurriculum.


Additionally,thePrintandElectronicResourcesteamplantoremoveapproximately10,000printbooksfromthestorageareaandrelocatedolderitemsfromthe2ndfloorstackstothestorageareainthebasement.Thiswillopenspaceforincomingprintresources,asnotallinformationisinelectronicformats,andensurethecollectionsremainup-to-dateforthecustomers.

Expandandimproveaccesstoonlineresources:

AstheUWLibrariesworkontheExLibrisPrimodiscoverytooltoimprovediscoverabilityandaccesstoresourcesoftheUWLibraries,thePrintandElectronicResourcesteammembersareworkingwiththeHSLWebTeamontheA-ZeJournallistthatisfocusedonHealthSciencesLibrary-specificeJournalsinadditiontoworkingwiththePrimoOperationsGrouptoensureusabilityofPrimodiscoverytool.

ThePrintandElectronicteamwillalsocontinuetofocusoneBooksinsteadofprintbookstoensuredistancestudentscanaccessnecessarybooks,bypurchasingeBookswithmultipletounlimitedusersdependingonpriceandbudget.

AligncollectionsandaccessstrategieswithcurrentandemergingUniversityneeds:

WiththestartoftheHealthSciencesLibraryCollectionsManagerandClinicalLiaisonrolethatisembeddedinthePublicandResearchServicesdepartment,theneedforaseparatecollectionscommitteeisnolongernecessary.ThisrolewillhaveregularcontactwiththeotherliaisonlibrariansandthedepartmentsofSuzzalloLibrarythatwouldensurethatthereisregularcommunicationandcentralizedcoordinationofresourceinvestigation,negotiationandpurchasing.Theplanwillhavethisrolenotonlyhandlingcollectiondevelopmentandmanagement,butalsowithcollectionassessmenttohelpwithmanagingelectronicandprintresourcesbasedonqualitativeandquantitativeevaluation.

• PNRfinalizedfundingagreementsfor10newawardsforoutreach,technologyimprovement,medicallibrarypilotprojects,andanewregionalsymposium.Inaddition,PNRfundedseveralProfessionalDevelopmentAwards,includingfundingtofourNetworkmemberstoattendthe“SupportingClinicalCare:AnInstituteinEvidence-basedPracticeforMedicalLibrarian”onJuly24-27inDenver,Colorado.

• AnMOUwassignedfortheWashingtonStatePublicHealthInformationAccess(PHIA)projectwithLamar-SoutterLibraryatUniversityofMassachusetts,Worcester,toprovideWashingtonStatepublichealthworkforcewithdesktopdigitalaccesstolicensede-resourcesanddocumentdeliveryservicefromMay1,2014,throughApril30,2016.Statepublichealthemployeesweretrainedonnavigatingthedigitallibrary,andPNRstaffprovidedworkshopsaboutusingPubMedandEndNote.UWLibrariesAccessServiceagreedtofillrequestsforscansofUW-heldprintmaterial,ortoobtainarticlesborrowedfromotherlibraries.Attheendofthepilot,UWLibrarieswillneedto-reassesstheprogramtoensureworkloadandout-of-pocketcostssustainability.

• PNRRendezvous,afreecontinuingeducationwebinarserieswithtimelyandtopicspresentations,isorganizedandhostedmonthlybythePNR.Duringthereportingperiod,thesetalkswerefeatured:
