Dear Parents,
I was fortunate to be part of an Administration, Counselor and PTA group that viewed the movie Raceto Nowhere yesterday. The film is about the pressure students are under to succeed in school. As aschool we are discussing how we might use this film within the ISM community and I am sure it willraise some very valuable discussion. What I was particularly pleased about was that many of the issuesand their suggested solutions have been discussed and acted upon at ISM. Now dont get me wrong allschools have their warts and ISM is no exception. We can always get better at what we do, but it wasvery heartening to see that amongst some of the suggested action were things that we alreadyroutinely do. We teach the whole child, we value the arts, we value creativity, we plan no homework weekends, we have little home work in ES, more in MS and where necessary in HS to reach therequisite standards. We have an IB assessment calendar and we have held student balance andoverload issues right at the forefront of decisions we have made about changing or developing the HSprogram. Above all one of the clear messages in the film is that students dont have to do lots of things, but rather a few things really well. This is the same message that our Guidance Counselors havebeen saying and I am pleased to report that I believe the message is steadily getting through to thestudents.
In terms of whole child education and valuing the arts I want to make a special plug for some of thefabulous opportunities we have in store for you this month. Next Friday please come to the HS Finale
Concert, last year this was simply exquisite! The IB2 Art Exhibition will formally open on April 19thalong with the IB Film festival. In addition we have 100% Dance Co and the tri M jazz Night. Keepposted for further details about these and other great performances.
Enjoy the weekend.
