EDF Energy
• We employ nearly 14,000 people
• We generate around 20 - 25% of UK’s electricity
• We are the country’s largest producer of low carbon
electricity
• We operate eight nuclear power stations plus wind
farms, gas, and coal
• We plan to build four new nuclear reactors:
- 2 at Hinkley Point in Somerset
- 2 at Sizewell in Suffolk

Nuclear New Build Projects
• Complex projects with a focus on nuclear safety!
• Covering the entire nuclear lifecycle from design,
construction, commissioning, operations, and
eventually decommissioning
• Long timescales:
Construction + Operations + Decommissioning
= Over 100 years of Knowledge to manage and
lessons to learn

Nuclear New Build Opportunity
NNB has the unique opportunity to set Knowledge
Management behaviours, culture, and standards for
the Hinkley Point C project from project inception
instead of working to change them, such as on an
operational site.

Nuclear New Build KM Strategy
The NNB approach to the development of the KM
Strategy can be summarised as:
The NNB Knowledge Management Strategy shall utilise existing
company arrangements and shall apply an integrated and
systematic approach incorporating benchmarking, learning,
and international best practices to ensure that knowledge is
shared, captured, and stored in a retrievable and accessible
format throughout the phases of the project lifecycle.

NNB KM Pilot Project – DA Knowledge Hub
• Engineers need to capture
design knowledge and
OPEX from the beginning
• Design Authority resources
and infrastructure
• Examined “twitter, google,
and wikipedia” type functionality
• Tools for Working Groups,
plus Engineering Wiki
function and People Pages
to supplement existing
company processes and
procedures
Lessons Learned from the DA Knowledge Hub
• Ultimately, the DA KM Hub was not rolled out for
general use across the DA but there were several
valuable lessons learned through development and
piloting which were captured to support on-going
development of the NNB KM Strategy.
- Leadership
- Corporate level strategy alignment
- Development and planning
- Communications and “soft factors”
- IT flexibility, customization, ownership

Final Thoughts on Knowledge Management
• KM is an extremely diverse subject and there are many
facets of the topic that need to be considered together
when planning and implementing a KM strategy across
an organisation.
• HPC is positioned to develop strong and sustainable
knowledge management processes that can be an
example in the industry
• Work with our stakeholders and supply chain to define
knowledge requirements
• Major safety improvements and cost/time savings if
knowledge is captured and codified as it is created
