EXPERIENCE The original SMITH cryogenic service valve was designed over 50 years ago. Personnel with more than 75 years of combined experience work together to continuously improve the design and quality of SMITH cryogenic service valves today. Our experience in design, manufacture, and state of the art testing for cryogenic valves is the best in the industry. The result of this combined experience and proven track record is a valve that performs trouble free in severe environments. STANDARD VALVE DESIGN FEATURES • Materials with high Impact Energy. i.e.: 300 series
austenitic stainless
• Lapped mirror-like seating surfaces minimize even small molecule gases such as Helium from escaping
• 12” extended gas column
• Full Penetration welds on extensions requiring welding
AVAILABLE VALVE DESIGN FEATURES • Soft seat inserts Kel-F or TFE
• Vented up-stream seat
• Drip Plates
• Cryogenic Testing (Sample lot or Production)
TESTING
The SMITH engineering department designed and built the illustrated test stand in house, including controls and programming. An IEC 61131 compliant PLC (programmable logic controller) manages process control, motion control and sensor interface. A second more sophisticated computer compares sensor values in real time to industry test guidelines, controls test phase progression and logs test results. Test sequence advancement is subject to a successful result of the current test phase. The color touch screen graphically displays all sensor data throughout the test and facilitates operator interface functions.
Designated test valves are handled by experienced cryogenic team personnel and are subjected to the following prior to shipment:
•Parts cleaning and valve assembly
•Ambient leak pressure test
•Cryogenic leak pressure test
•Endurance and hydrostatic tests
•Return to ambient test
•Dismantle / Inspection tests
DIMENSIONAL DATA INDUSTRY
Most industries generally define Cryogenic service as any service with flowing medium at temperatures lower than -150 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Ethylene, C2H4 = - 155 ºF • Methane, CH4 = - 259 ºF • Oxygen, O2 = - 297 ºF • Argon, Ar = - 303 ºF • Nitrogen, N = - 320 ºF • Neon, Ne = - 411 ºF • Hydrogen, H = - 423 ºF • Helium, He = - 452 ºF Liquefied gases such as liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, and
Liquefied Natural Gas or LNG (mainly Methane) are used in many cryogenic applications. Industrial usage of cryogenics is widespread and ranges from air separation to rocket fuel such as liquid hydrogen. Although many applications are comparatively clean, odorless, colorless, non-toxic, and non-corrosive, they are usually very dangerous and hazards may include flammability, freezing, or asphyxia. THEREFORE, cryogenic applications require safe, reliable, leak-free, and high performance valves. The solution is SMITH cryogenic service valves.
