We keep moving forward, opening
new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps
leading us down new paths.
—WALT DISNEYThe doors here at Housetrends have always been ajar but we have recently pushed them wide open! Have you heard that e-mail is obsolete? Social media is now the most common way to communicate. In fact, the cover of this issue of Housetrendswas chosen by our Facebook friends after a couple of possibilities were posted by Cassandra Snyder, who handles our social media posts. The response was incredible. By the way, if you have not “friended” us yet, please do. We’d love to hear from you.
In this issue which celebrates contem-porary spaces, you will find a glorious home in an unlikely setting, Marietta, Ohio, the foothills of Appalachia. Take a look and you’ll see how the homeowners and architect managed to blend a quirky vibe with a level of sleek sophistication. We also take you on a tour of a New Albany bathroom done in soothing shades of gray as well as an Upper Arlington kitchen that’s been more than a dozen years in the making.
Tweet, post or yes, even e-mail us, and let us know what you think and what you’d like to see next.
Enjoy!

The front entrance of the home is remi-niscent of the iron ore blast furnaces that once peppered this Appalachian foothills region. The pyramidal stone “tower” boasts a copper-clad entry door that provides rustic appeal. The adjacent standing-seam metal roof, complete with purposefully random skylights, continues the rural theme.
Shaded by mature trees and newly planted sugar maples, the home runs parallel to a steep ravine that ensures the couple’s privacy. However, plenty of four-legged trespassers, including fox, deer and coyote, keep them company as they relax around their pool. The stone wall
surrounding their outdoor living area is neatly ordered facing the patio, but from the exterior blends into the character of the wooded lot, appearing to be a remnant foundation, built by long-ago inhabitants.
Touchpoints of the pastA garage, built on the footprint of the existing 1930s-era house that was razed, is sided to resemble a log cabin, adding to the sense of history the property evokes.
Candy explains that the couple’s home, newly constructed in the fall of 2011, is a perfect reflection of her fiancé’s personal-ity: “Chris is very laid back. He’s really
a former hippie whose lifestyle today is more conservative, so the house is kind of his alter ego,” she chuckles. “We both enjoyed working with our architect, whose imagination, along with an ability to translate our sense of fun into a livable space, made this a delightful experience,” she adds.
Architect Kent Thompson of archigni-tion Studio, confirms that the interior of the home, as atypical as its exterior, is a reflection of its occupants.
“Good architecture is about creating a space that is interesting and functional, but has meaning that is relevant to person-
Situated along a wooded ridgeline in Marietta, Ohio, the home of Christopher Brunton and Candy Davis appears
to have been built over several decades by generations of homeowners, completely unfettered by rules and con-
vention. Seemingly based entirely upon soaring whimsy, the home’s design is, in fact, entirely grounded in time
and place. Approached by a beautiful country lane crowded with rhododendron, azalea and forsythia, the 3,600
square foot home reveals itself as both random and ordered, jarringly unexpected, yet comfortably familiar.

OVERLEAF: Skylights, natural lights, wall and ceiling fixtures flood the home with warm layers of lighting. OPPOSITE: The entryway, a conical stone “tower” reminiscent of iron ore blast furnaces that were once commonplace in southern Ohio, is the focal point of the home. ABOVE: In the great
room, the wall behind Christopher and Candy is hand-finished in a Venetian plaster technique and tilts into the room at a 12-degree angle.

alities as well as to place,” Thompson says. “Candy and Chris both wanted something radical and unusual, but friendly. I think we achieved that,” he says, in explaining how the exterior gives a nod to its south-ern Ohio context.
Working all the anglesOnce inside the home, sleek sophistica-tion blends with unpredictable eccentric-ity to create a quirky and contemporary vibe. To the right of the tower entry foyer, small windows set at cockeyed angles extend a fanciful welcome to visitors. The
main living space features an upward-zooming ceiling that sets off the soaring fireplace in the center of the room.
Disparate angles throughout the space work together in startling, complex ways. For example, an exterior wall in the main living space tilts into the room at a 12-degree angle. If that’s not enough to evoke exclamation, its beauty, enhanced by a muted cork color, applied with an authentic Venetian plaster technique, also is remarkable.
“I also had so much fun working with Pam, our interior designer, who has a

knack for understanding exactly what we were looking for and knowing how every-thing goes together,” says Candy. “The neutral palette she helped us find, as in the beautiful Roche Bobois leather sectional in our living room, helps create a calming bal-ance to our quirkiness,” she says.
Pam Holschuh of Copper Leaf Interior Design Studio, coordinated design aspects with Thompson, as well as build-er John Gillard of Gillard Construction, to satisfy the couple’s desire to reflect their lighthearted approach to life in their surroundings.
“The wall of windows in our kitchen accentuates the sleek lacquer of the cabi-nets. And, the quartz countertops actually sparkle, which is great, because I’m a big fan of bling, right down to the gas-fired crystals in our fireplace,” Candy says.
Retreat within a retreatThe couple’s master bathroom features specialty Treefrog™ wood veneer cabine-try that “floats” above the natural quartz floor. The specialty veneer is environ-mentally friendly, as it is engineered from sustainable wood products grown in man-aged tree farms.

The centerpiece of the space is the solid surface Hastings tub from the Chelsea collection. Wall sconces provide ambiance that is rivaled only by a one-of-a-kind light well in the ceiling, a further collaboration of Thompson and Gillard, that brings southern light into the north-facing bath-room, bouncing summer-like light off the angled walls directly into the tub.
“At the end of every workday, Chris and I enjoy relaxing in our favorite spot in the house, our octagon-shaped sunroom off the great room. From this vantage point we have a 180-degree view of the trees and the wildlife that surround our home. In the summertime we have easy access to the pool, another favorite hangout,” she adds.

White–the color of freshly fallen snow and wedding gowns.
This color is universally known for illustrating innocence. However,
depending on how it is used, it can elicit several different moods. | Pair crisp
whites with royal blues for a preppy New England feel or accent ivory fur-
niture with brass studs for an edgier feel. If it’s the classic look you yearn
for, keep things simple with delicate lace features. When using the
color white, the world is your oyster.

VIRTUALLYcontemporarySTAFFERS PICK THEIR FAVORITE CONTEMPORARY SPACES TO BUILD THEIR VIRTUAL DREAM HOME
Thousands of photos cross the desks of the Housetrends’
editorial and graphic team each year. And even though most
of us leave work and head to our traditional or transitional
homes, we all stop and stare when a striking contemporary
space is splayed across a co-worker's computer screen.
These artful, yet minimalistic scenes seem to capture our
attention and get us talking. › To commemorate this special
contemporary issue, we’ve selected our favorite living room,
dining room, kitchen, bath, bedroom, patio and façade—all
collected from different homes in different cities—to create
our virtually stunning showcase of contemporary tastes. ›
Sample it for yourself. If you’d like to see more, we’ll show
you how to take a more in-depth tour.

Getting Organized
Is it an elusive American dream? By Kelly Z. Clark
046-050 tUNV GettingOrganized.indd 46 2/15/13 5:29 PM
housetrends.com 47
It’s hard to estimate just how much time and money is spent each year in the United States by those of us who dream of having a more organized garage, office, filing system, kitchen, closet or refrigerator. One thing, however, is certain: the solu-tion to getting organized still eludes the majority of us, and it’s not because companies have yet to invent the perfect container, storage bin or closet system. In fact, over time we have been presented with a myriad of products, experts and storage companies just begging us to wage war on our messes! If you’re not sure all this really applies to you because your mother or best friend hasn’t mentioned your disorganiza-tion—don’t worry, they won’t. Chances are good they have their own issues in this area and don’t want to risk comparing messes. continued >

Consider the following
statements and decide which are
true for you:
O I can locate my birth/marriage certificates and passport effortlessly.
O I can find my 2000 tax return in less than two minutes.
O Inviting company over for dinner means unearthing the dining room table and performing careful excavation of months of paperwork, mail, permission slips, homework, etc.
O I rebuy things I know I already have because they seem to get misplaced.
O I can park the number of cars in my garage that it was designed to hold.
O I wear only 25% of my wardrobe because 75% is hard to reach, hard to see or hardly in style anymore.
O I rent a storage unit to keep things I’m unsure I, or my family, will really ever want.
O I actually use 80% of what I own at least three to four times a year.
Organization = EmpowermentThe number of statements to the left that apply to you isn’t important, but understanding the value of getting out from under your mess is life chang-ing. And while our troubled economy is unsettling, it can have a positive effect on some of us. Some studies suggest that people feel a need to clean, organize and de-clutter their homes as a means of empowering themselves when they feel

powerless over their finances. Let’s face it, being unorganized costs money, not to mention the effort and stress it causes. Couldn’t most of us commit to having more respect for our homes, families and belongings by clearing our clutter and keeping only what we really need? Of course we could. So let’s get back to the basics and look at some very manageable approaches to getting started.
ADD PERKS WHERE YOU PARKDiscover your happy place with an organized garage.

Keep up the good work and keep rolling with these tips:Set a timer to keep yourself on task. Do NOT let each phase of the project go on for too long and become overwhelming or risk going unfinished. It’s also motivating to play “beat the clock.”
Live the mantra “a place for everything and everything in its place.” When every item has a “home” there’s no reason to set it down any place else.
Don’t keep things just because they cost you money—but do consider how many hours you work to buy things you don’t even know you own or never use.
Similar items should always be stored together close to the place they are used most.
Getting organized doesn’t begin with a shopping trip, so don’t buy storage containers until you know what kind you need and how many. If you buy too many

Three basic methods used by experts to get the ball rolling with
their clients. These are intentionally
simple so as not to overwhelm us or require a major
life change to feel successful:
1Work in a circle
Starting by the door to the room, just move clockwise in a circle around the room picking up items and put-ting them away. This approach gives a method for how to proceed as you move through the space.
2Flat surfaces first
This is especially useful in a home office or kitchen. Focus on flat sur-faces like the floor and countertops first and clear only the clutter you can see before you open any drawers or closets.
3Centralize
Use a central location like the bed, dining room table (or driveway if you’re cleaning the garage) to lay out all items that need to be sorted. While the items are on the bed or table you can see everything in one place at one time and begin to sort. This method also clears the mess from a room, giv-ing fast results and a sense of accom-plishment that can be motivating.
MAKE ACCESS EASY

you will keep more items than you need; buy too few and the project won’t get completed.
Don’t confuse rearranging and tidying up with organizing because really getting organized generally requires getting rid of things.
The most important thing is just to get started and remember that “good enough” really is. If there’s one thing we should know by now is that there’s no silver bul-let when it comes to de-cluttering and organizing. Commit to being willing and you will be able to do it!

What is a bathroom if it doesn’t
provide the kind of leisure that author C. Neil
Strait describes, “Life lived amidst tension and
busyness needs leisure. Leisure that recreates
and renews. Leisure should be a time to think
new thoughts, not ponder old ills.” Indeed, Emily
Miller and her husband were inspired to recreate
their home’s master bathroom into a space that
is beautiful, welcoming, functional, and a type of
respite amongst life’s inevitable busyness.
Rarely does a homeowner walk into their new residence without thinking about how the home could be changed a little bit here and there to be more accommodating. Emily and her husband were settled happily in their New Albany home, but they wanted the master bathroom to be revital-ized and the closet space expanded. The couple decided to extend 30 feet of the home’s rear façade wall out six feet to match the rear wall on the first floor. The expansion project doubled the size of the bathroom, doubled the closet space, and created a vital center for relaxation.
“For me, the bathroom is my place to get away from it all,” says Emily. She continues to say that Todd Parker, Owner of Formula Five Design/Architecture, and Andrew Hale, Owner of The Hale Construction Company both eas-ily caught on to her conceptual ideas about the bathroom. “Hale understood what I meant by relaxation and suggested a speaker system for the shower that I could connect my iPod into,” says Miller who absolutely loves this added feature. The shower is roomy, has steam technology, and is decorated with a timeless glass mosaic tile.
Room to breatheFunctional, but not exactly inviting, the home’s original bathroom was long, narrow, and crowded with two side-by-side his and her vanities. Emily was anxious to separate the vanities across the room from each other and to add a new set of cabinetry for each as well. She selected contemporary vessel sink basins that are five inches deep and swoop up at elegant angles on each corner. The black granite counter-top has a leathered texture that contrasts well against the smooth, white sinks and contemporary cabinetry below. Each vanity has a modish reflective medicine cabinet framed by a set of beautiful sconce lights.
Beyond the shower is the newly added walk-in closet space. Hale Construction worked methodically with the homeowner to help her make decisions about how the stor-age could be organized. Careful thought was given to each set of her wardrobe. Adding newly organized closet space can relieve stress for any homeowner.

A light touchEmily selected an elegant new bathtub that adds a touch of signature value to the room. “I was very particular about the type of tub I wanted. It had to be both beautiful and comfortable. So, I tested them out in the showroom to make sure I found the one I was looking for,” she says. Over the top of the tub hangs a chandelier with a contemporary style. Set on a dim-mer switch, this lighting fixture sets the right mood in the evenings for a relaxing bath.
Along with added space in the bath-room is added natural sunlighting. “This new window in the bathroom has added a lot of warmth and happiness to the space,” says Emily. The bathroom has a variety of lighting from can lights to the chandelier, and sconce lights at the vanities. “We designed the lighting so that each fix-ture is dimmable,” says Hale. “We wanted Emily to be able to have any type of light-ing she would need from task lighting to mood lighting to overall space lighting.”
Each morning, both Emily and her husband can walk onto a porcelain tile floor that is warmed with radiant heat-ing. This type of heat can reduce the load on the furnace and tends to feel more natural, making it a highly popular feature in home renovation projects. Miller says they have the floor on a low setting and that is all they need to take off the chill, even in winter.
Along with the added space, Emily was able to start to change over the inte-rior design of her home from that of a Georgian style to a more contemporary elegant style. She loves the new gray walls, the sleek fixtures, the updated shower technology with gorgeous tile, and the calm and peacefulness that come with a contemporary design done well.
“I wanted the bathroom to be designed such that when I look in from the bed-room, it would look beautiful and welcom-ing,” says Emily. “I love to see the gorgeous tub framed by the pewter wall behind it. The chandelier above even reflects specks of light that dance around the room.”

Ralph and Holly Augostini know from
experience that good things happen to those who wait. Their home was built
in the 1950s, around the time Elvis was crooning “…only fools rush in…”
Half a century and three owners later, the Augostini kitchen looked exactly as
it did when it was built, down to the original cabinets, limited counter space,
and paisley curtains. ✦ The frozen-in-time kitchen did not deter the Augostinis
from purchasing their home in 1999. Holly says that otherwise the house was
perfect for their family of five and she and Ralph knew they would eventually
renovate but, “we wanted to live in the house for a while to really know how
we wanted to change the kitchen, and then do it right.” continued >

Out of sight, out of mind After several years, the Augostinis had developed very specific ideas of what they wanted in a kitchen. They brought in custom home contractor Walt Betley of Betley Vistain Builders who, together with Stock and Stone Architects, brought their vision to life. The decision was to completely gut the old kitchen. In addition, they planned to remove the adjoining wall to the family room and create one large space. They matched the family room’s existing 2¼" oak floor planks to seamlessly make the two rooms into one. And the renovation used the home’s existing footprint; no new foundation was needed.
Holly and Ralph’s first goal for the kitchen was efficient flow, so the cooktop, refrigerator and sink were placed within a few feet of each other, forming an imaginary triangle. Holly wanted the cooktop to be in the island so she could face the room and enjoy the view through the bay window. “When I cooked in our old kitchen I always felt I had my back to everyone,” she remembers.
Next, they wanted a clean look, soft contemporary lines and abundant storage, all of which their 1950s kitchen lacked. Cooley Custom Cabinetry created their cabinets using rift cut maple and Mappa Burl, a wood from the burl of the European black poplar tree. Storage now abounds with cabinets behind the countertop to hide things like toasters and blenders. “I love not seeing small appliances on the counters,” says Holly.
Appliances are hidden, too—no clutter here. Two dishwashers, a recycling area, a warming drawer and a two-drawer Sub-Zero refrigerator dedicated to cold drinks are all inside custom cabi-nets.
Even the microwave is out of sight. “We didn’t want to have it sitting on the counter, so we chose a built-in microwave drawer,” says Holly.

Betley says his company is seeing more and more clients choose microwave drawers over wall or countertop units. “The drawers are ergonomically better,” he says, noting that often the wall units are placed too high to use conveniently.
Buying localWith the cooktop in the island, the hood became the centerpiece of the kitchen and the Augostinis saw this as an opportunity to add an artistic element. They asked Stock and Stone to design a decorative hood to cover the working insert. The design called for
custom-crafted stainless steel, but they first did a life-sized mock-up out of paper to see how it would look.
The Augostinis were thrilled with the finished result. “It’s a piece of art,” observes Holly. The hood was made by a central Ohio metal worker, and Holly says she and her husband were happy to be able to support a local artist.
Betley was pleased, but not surprised that he could find someone close by to craft the steel and says, “No matter how obscure, you can find anyone to do any-thing in central Ohio.”

Taking the time to do it right Because Holly and Ralph were prepared and knew what they were looking for, Betley remarked that the whole process was efficient. After determining layout, cabinets, and appliances, the Augostinis selected the finishing touches of wall color, granite and lighting. They found Antique Brown granite at Solazzo Marble and Granite. All lighting was through Bernard Electric, which gave them another opportunity for artistic expression, particularly the fan-shaped wood shades on the lights over the kitchen table.
Holly says the four-month renovation was fun and there was no pressure to make decisions quickly. Betley credits the fact that the Augostinis took the time to live there long enough to know what they ultimately wanted, noting, “It was probably one of the bigger transformations we’ve ever done.”
“And well worth the wait,” Holly adds.
