![Page 2: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
When Greek soldiers came to the Middle East they brought with them many aspects of their culture.
![Page 3: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Including:
• Art• Philosophy• Architecture• Sports
![Page 4: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
And a new culture was formed called:
Hellenism
![Page 5: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
One of the central themes of Greek culture was that of Humanism.Humanism is the belief that humans are at the center of everything.
![Page 6: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
This is very different than Judaism which looks at God as the center of everything.
GOD
![Page 7: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The Greeks believed so strongly that their culture was superior to all others that they wanted to impose their lifestyles upon everyone.
![Page 8: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Many Jews became very attracted to the Greek culture.
![Page 9: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The group was small, but very vocal and very powerful
And they became just as Greek as the Greeks. They began to send
their kids to the gymnasium.
They even went through painful surgeries so they wouldn’t stand
out as being Jewish.
![Page 10: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
In many ways the main conflict of Chanukah was between the mainstream Jews and these “Hellenized” Jews.
![Page 11: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
At first their was harmony between the Jewsand the Greeks.
![Page 12: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
But then the Greeks started looking at the “bizarre” practices of the Jews, and started thinking of us a challenge to their “world supremacy”.
![Page 13: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
And more and more Greeks became hostile to the Jews.
![Page 14: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The Greek Empire split into three distinct empires:
• Seleucid• Ptolemian• Macedonian
This is where is Israel is located.
![Page 15: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
At first the Jews were under the rule of the Ptolemians, who were generally liberal and tolerant of other beliefs.
![Page 16: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
But things got much worse
when the region was
taken over by the Seleucids,
whose king was named
Antiochus.
![Page 17: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Antiochus came to the conclusion that his weakest link in defense against the Ptolemies was the Jews.
![Page 18: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
He started taking measures to force the Jews to be more like the Greeks.
![Page 19: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
He replaced the kohain gadol with a Jew he controlled, thus completely corrupting the Temple service.
He banned use of the Jewish calendar, knowing full well
how focused the Jews were on the various Jewish holiday
cycles.
![Page 20: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
He prohibited keeping kosher.
And Torah study.
![Page 21: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
The Greeks burnt Torah scrolls. And they filled
the Temple with idols and swine
sacrifices.
![Page 22: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
And forbade the practice of brit milah.
![Page 23: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Nevertheless, many Jews passively
resisted, doing the practices despite the prohibition.
![Page 24: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Often paying for their resistance with their lives.
![Page 25: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Until one day…
![Page 26: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
The Greeks marched into the Jewish town of Modi’in.
![Page 27: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
They demanded a volunteer to sacrifice a pig to a Greek idol.
![Page 28: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
When someone volunteered,
Matityahu rose up, killed the
volunteer and the Greek general, and called his
people to rebel in the name of
Hashem.
![Page 29: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Matityahu, along with his five sons:
YochananShimon
Yehuda HaMacabiElazar
Yonatan
![Page 30: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
went to the hills to fight with guerilla warfare against the Greeks.
![Page 31: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
The Greek army was 40,000 strong.
No one knows exactly how big the Jewish army got, but the
biggest estimates are 12,000.
![Page 32: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Not to mention that
the Greeks were trained soldiers with
proper fighting
equipment.
![Page 33: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
And elephants!
![Page 34: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
The war would last a total of 25
years, with many
casualties on both sides.
![Page 35: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Three years into the war
the Jews successfully conquered
Yerushalayim.
![Page 36: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
They found the Temple defiled with idols and
swine.
![Page 37: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
They searched and only found
one flask of pure olive oil
to light the menorah in
the Temple.
PURE
OLIVE
OIL
![Page 38: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
It was enough oil to last for one
day. Miraculously it lasted for eight, which gave them enough time to produce more.
Pure Oil
![Page 39: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
The Temple was rededicated on
the 25th of Kislev, so the rabbis
instituted to light the Chanukiah for eight days every year.
![Page 40: History Of Chanukah Power Point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b31a654a7959be3e8b45a1/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
And this is to celebrate the two miracles of Chanukah:
The miraculous victory against the Greeks. And the miracle of the oil.
