Where they were
● Were located across the United States during Civil War.
● Many became Americans when the U.S. expanded its
boundaries
● Forced to choose between the confederacy and the
union.
Hispanics in the south
● In the Southeast, hispanics supported the Confederate cause.
● Gulf Coast region of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana
● Mainly planters with plantations or businessmen in Mobile and New
Orleans
● Slave owners
● Many were involved with the local military
● Influenced by Confederates to secede
from union
Hispanics in the North
● Many came from Philadelphia, New York, and Boston
● Best way to become “American” was to join the army
● Many joined in large groups
● Faced racial prejudices
● Had come from Puerto Rico, Spain, and Mexico.
