Newsletter #4 Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Dear Parents
As Halloween is less than two weeks away we will be talking to your children about Halloween safety. For
example, members of our grade 7 leadership team will be giving safety tips over the P.A. system. Please take
time to review Halloween safety with your children.
During the months of October and November, many families will be participating in Eid and Diwali
celebrations. Eid is a special time of year for Muslims. Eid al-Adha is also know as the feast of sacrifice and
marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Eid is also a time for families to come together and celebrate
with food and exchanging of gifts.
Originating in India, Diwali is celebrated by many members of the Sikh and Hindu faiths. Around the
world, this “festival of lights” is celebrated with small clay lamps and families getting to gather to share in
festive feasts and dancing. Fireworks are often lit to scare off evil spirits in order to make way for wealth,
happiness and prosperity.
Eid Mubarak Oct 15th & Happy Diwali Nov. 3rd Chimney Hill!
Your children have been and will be learning about a program called the ‘Virtues Project’. The lessons
revolve around discussions about 52 different virtues. Please take time to discuss how these virtues fit into
your family structure or culture. (The virtues poster is including in this newsletter)
Sincerely,
C.S. Baldry

Cross Country 2013
We had an excellent season in Cross Country with glorious weather and approximately 80 enthusias-
tic participants. It is inspiring to see so many students working on their personal fitness first. This year we ran
the Terry Fox route and noticed how many students improved in their ability to run the route for the entire 20
minutes. We also started our warm-up this year with lively music in the gym.
Thank you to Mrs. Hilton for volunteering her time to help organize parent drivers, and ensuring students
were accounted for in a safe manner. Thank you to our teacher and parent drivers and to our coaches Mrs.
Ramsden, Mrs. Harms, Mrs. Dayal, Mrs. Mauro, Mrs. Calbick, Ms. Johal and Mrs. Gazo. Thank you to Mr. Baldry
for overseeing organization of the event at Fleetwood Park.
We hope to see those of you in grades 3 - 7 out again this spring for Track and Field. Parents, please
continue to encourage physical fitness in your children.
A special recognition to our ribbon winners who ran exceptionally well at the meet.

A Message From Your Student Council
Your student council would like to remind you that Halloween is no fun if someone gets hurt. It's easy to be safe. Just slow down, stay together and make smart choices. Here are 25 great tips for having a safe and fun Halloween this year:
1. Always stay in well lit areas. 2. Look both ways before crossing the street.
3. Wear shoes that fit properly. 4. Don't go near a fire cracker on the ground. Tell an adult instead.
5. Stay together. Don't go anywhere alone. 6. Never run in your costume.
7. Stay away from houses that are dark 8. Put reflective tape on your costume so drivers can see you.
9. Never scare other people, even as a joke. 10. Don't eat treats that are homemade or in open packages.
11. Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries to see and be seen. 12. Never cut across yards or use alleys.
13. Wear face paint or make up instead of wearing a mask. 14. Stay away from lit candles and jack-o-lanterns.
15. Make sure someone in your group has a cell phone. 16. Never go into someone else's house or car.
17. Cross the street at a corner or a crosswalk. 18. Don't eat any candy until it has been checked by an adult.
19. Never touch, hold or use a fire cracker. 20. If you decide to wear a mask, cut large eyeholes so you can see.
21. Don't zig zag across the street. Do one side then the other. 22. Stay with an adult at all times.
23. Leave animals alone. Halloween is scary enough for them. 24. Never fight with toy weapons, even as a joke.
25. Always remember to say thank you.
