First Reading Deuteronomy 30:15-20
The choice that Yahweh offers the people of Israel is stark. It is a life or death decision. The people are warned
that the choice between faithfulness to Yahweh and turning to bow down to other gods in the land that
Yahweh is about to give them is theirs and that their future will be determined by it. God is upholding his end
of the covenant he made with Abraham. Will the people honor their side? Are we honoring our side of the
covenant we have with God as adopted children through Jesus Christ?
Second Reading 1 Corinthians 3.1-9
Paul wrote that real wisdom is God’s: hidden, mysterious, planned and prepared from the very beginning for the glory of those who love the Lord.
Gospel Matthew 5.21–37
Jesus said he came not to abolish the law but to fulfil it. He described such fulfilment as a matter not of legal argumentation but of holiness, reconciliation and the obedience of faith. Jesus encouraged the disciples to let their “Yes” mean “Yes” and their “No” mean “No.”
Reflection
The law of Christ based on godly love does not supplant a law based on justice. It goes further. It demands the living out of what we say in the Lord’s Prayer: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Isn’t this “hard bargain” really the “tough love” of the Holy Trinity? Beginning always with love, God calls, encourages, and strengthens us to share the great mystery of divine life. By our actions we express our answer to God’s call.
6th Sunday after Epiphany
Please pray for our nominators and the diocesan selection committee for patience as they work through the difficult process of securing a Rector for this Parish.
Bountiful God,
give to this parish a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word
and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip your people for
ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Give to those who will choose,
wisdom, discernment and patience, and to us give warm and generous hearts,
for Jesus Christ’s sake.
