EDITORIAL
Having enjoyed producing the BHMC monthly magazine Heritage Times for the past 2 years I
believe it is time to relinquish the role and accordingly I will not be standing for the Editor posi-
tion at the December 2017 AGM. We would like to thank all the magazine contributors who pro-
vided text and photographs for the numerous articles which have appeared in the magazine issues,
without which our task of producing, what we hope has been a “good read”, would not have been
possible. Thanks to everyone.
Charles Hodsdon and Judy Brand

RECENT CLUB ACTIVITIES . . .
Cooma Motorfest – Saturday 4th November 2017
The bi-annual Cooma Motorfest hosted by the CMHAC at the Cooma Showground was one of 3 major
events being held in Cooma on the day, the other two being the Australian National Busking Champion-
ships and the Snowy Ride where many 100’s of motor bike riders took time out in Cooma as part of their
annual ride.
It was a brilliant day weather wise, there was a total
of 350 entries in a wide range of categories in the
Motorfest, over 3000 people visited the display ena-
bling amounts of $5000 each to be donated to two
local charities. There were trophies awarded in 36
different categories which gives some idea of the
task the judges had in inspecting and assessing the
minute differences between the entrants vehicles,
all of which were immaculately prepared.
BHMC Members noticed at the Motorfest were
Gary Smith who had two of his beloved Belletts on display, Graham Peterson and Henry Petterson, Antho-
ny Dack and Charles Hodsdon. There may have been others. As well as the cars there was a stationary en-
gine display, car related retail outlets, food outlets and a massive display of immaculately prepared large
trucks with one of the timber jinkers providing a practical demonstration of the versatility of the unit to re-
duce tyre wear when travelling unloaded. A great day out.
Picnic at Member’s Shed – Max and Sue Roberts –
Sunday 5th November 2017
It was one of the largest assembly of Car Club Members outside the Meals on Wheels Building in Bega Street at 11.30am for the short run out to Max and Sue’s property
across the Bega River. Max and Sue’s property, which they have owned for 30 odd years, comprises the main house and large garage with adjacent covered area on a pleasant land-
scaped block with many large trees and shrubs. .
6
On arrival Russell directed the historic cars
to parking places adjacent to the buildings
while those with modern cars found ample
parking spaces off the access road to the
main buildings. Following introductions to
our hosts, club members set about setting up
their various tables and chairs and having
their lunch interspersed with considerable
discussions.
Following lunch Max gave an interesting
talk on the origin of the property and his in-
terest in motor sport in which he has actively
participated over many years and still con-
tinues to take part in events when possible.
Following this introduction, it was time to
have an inspection of Max and Sue’s gar-
age to see what motoring treasures were hidden away inside. We were not disappointed.
All Max’s cars are kept in immaculate road ready condition and each of the cars have a pride of place and
unique characteristics which make them quite special in several ways. First and foremost, the cars are, with
one recent purchase exception, high performance cars which are built to go fast, in fact very fast. Max gave
club members a detailed history of each of his cars, their origin and purchase, their special characteristics
and what they meant to him. One gained the impression that Max was not intending to part with any of his
cars soon in fact he confided that there were a number of other cars out there that he could be interested in
purchasing to add to his collection.
After the garage tour Trevor Page thanked Max and Sue on behalf of club members for making the visit so
enjoyable and informative, Bert handed over a photo of a racing Ford Cortina, and Col McRae made a
presentation of a John Cursley’s recommended Irish whisky and goodies to Max and Sue for hosting the
Club Members for such an enjoyable lunch time outing. Members did not immediately rush off home,
many took time out to inspect the extensive gardens, to talk with Max and Sue and to catch up with other
club members whom they had not seen for some time. It was a great days outing. Thanks Max and Sue as
our hosts and to Col McRae who made the visit
possible.
Those on the run were:- Russell & Alison Napper – Triumph Stag, Col & Pat McRae – Valiant
Charger, Ray & Pauline Ubrihien – Oldsmobile, Bert Alker & Greta Butler – Wolseley 4/44, Wayne & Sue Milford – FJ Holden, Trevor Page –
VB Commodore, Frank & Ann Sheedy – VW Beetle, Graham & Gina Peterson – LJ Torana, Neil & Kerri Wood – Ford Mustang, Henry &
Janelle Petterson – Buick 46S Coupe, Bob & Sharyn Whiting – Chevrolet, Stan Arnts & Rhon-da Leggett – Morris Minor ute, and in moderns
were, Alan Smith, Bob & Nola Russell, Peter & Joycelyn Clark, Geoff & Lorraine Exell & Joan Kennedy, Tony & Dee Watson, Andrew Duch-
esne, Charles Hodsdon & Judy Brand, Barbara Black & Lyn Murphy.

Hidden talents of the Club’s Registrar.
Anthony’s Car and Head Centre was named the best workshop in NSW for 2016 in Bosch’s NSW Work-shop of the Year awards. His apprentice Jayden Barnes was named the runner up in Bosch’s apprentice of the year in Australia and New Zealand. Anthony’s workshop proudly displays other apprentice awards over
many years which is testimony to the training that the apprentices receive at Anthony’s. BHMC Club Mem-bers congratulate you both on these awards and it reminds us how fortunate the Club is to have such capa-ble people keeping our historic cars in good running condition.

It seems appropriate for the final members vehicle for 2017 to be one of the classics owned by the hard
working club’s events co-ordinator. Read on.
The January 1972 edition of Wheels Magazine announced that its 1971 winner of the ‘Wheels Magazine
Car of the Year Award’ was the first and new Chrysler Charger.
The Charger was released in August 1971 in four models of the VH range. These were the basic Charger,
the Charger XL, the sports model Charger E38R/T and the top of the line, Charger VH770. This VH 770
model was the upmarket Charger and had more creature comforts such as a woodgrain instrument panel
with tachometer, floor lighting, ash tray lamp, dual sports horns, vinyl trim and other ‘goodies’.
We purchased our new VH770 in January 1972 and brought it straight to Bega where it has stayed in the
district to this day. Its ‘Hemi’ engine is a ‘265’ which is a 265 cubic inch or 4.3 litre hemi six cylinder en-
gine.
Another available option was the 5.2 litre 318 cubic inch V8 with automatic transmission.
A distinguish-
ing feature of
the VH770 is
the rectangular
quartz halogen
driving lights
which are re-
cessed into the
horizontal
grille. Any
charger model
after 1972
does not have
this feature.
Our car has its
original three
speed floor gear shift which was not such a success at the time and was upgraded to a four speed in June
1972. It was then that the E38R/T became the E49R/T. This was the most powerful six cylinder factory
production car of its time and was the fastest accelerating Australian car to come off a regular production
line.
In my first year of driving this Charger I found that cars would fast approach me from behind and then sud-
denly back away and sit back. The reason for this was that the police also had highway patrol Chargers in
Alpine White.
I still enjoy taking it out on the road after 45 years, especially when an oncoming driver or pedestrian gives
me the ‘Hey Charger’ finger sign which was popular from the beginning of the Charger until production ceased in August 1978 after seven years.(thanks to Col & Pat McRae for this article)
