HELSINKI, FINLAND Arrive: 0800 Wednesday August 06, 2014
Onboard: 2100 Saturday August 09, 2014
Brief Overview: Brief Overview: While sometimes overshadowed
by its neighbors (Russia and Sweden), Finland has a
Scandinavian charm all its own. Its undisturbed lakes and
forests are a legacy of its late industrialization and agrarian
history. Yet in Helsinki and other urban centers, you’ll find a
bustling social democracy and world famous companies –
including Nokia Corporation. The Finnish enjoy top rates of
education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of
life, and human development compared to the rest of the world.
Finland is truly a winter wonderland, as most of the country is
covered in snow. Santa’s official residence is located in Lapland,
the northernmost province in Finland. The police even have an
official reindeer mascot to advocate for traffic safety! Finland’s
climate has led to the development of a number of winter
sports and outdoor activities. In summer, Finns pursue
hunting, fishing, mushroom gathering and other outdoor
pursuits in their summer homes in the countryside.
Visitors to Finland will notice a hallmark of Finnish culture:
silence. In Finland, it is agreed that if one does not have
something worth saying, it is better to be silent. Words are
chosen carefully and taken at face value. It is an introvert’s
paradise! Don’t worry though – most Finns speak English
and will help foreigners most hospitably!
