FISCAL YEAR 2017
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
2 HEALTHY FAMILIES. STRONG COMMUNITIES.
DEAR FR IENDS:
Our theme this year, HEALTHY FAMILIES. STRONG COMMUNITIES, reflects our belief that healthy families are the cornerstone to creating strong communities. Our dedication to families is stronger than ever and we are proud of the achievements made over the last 105 years and during Fiscal Year 2017.
It is especially poignant to talk about family this year, because in January 2017, IWS began providing health care services to men ages 19-64. For many years, IWS staff have witnessed in our waiting rooms, the love and dedication of men to their families’ health and well-being. It was important for us as an organization to treat the whole family, including dads. We are proud that the change in our operations was heartily welcomed by patients, staff, and supporters.
This historic move solidifies the IWS effort to serve the whole family by creating a healthcare home where accessible and high quality integrated healthcare services are available to the community at large.
You probably also noticed our new logo! It reflects both our illustrious legacy as the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago and the commitment to families that we show every day at the Angel Harvey Family Health Center. We hope you like the change as much as we do.
Thanks to our supporters and closest champions—the IWS Board of Directors, Auxiliary, Associate Board, community leaders, donors, and patients, WE SHOW HOW MUCH WE CARE FOR HEALTHY FAMILIES AND STRONG COMMUNITIES.
Sincerely,
E L I Z A B E T H M . H E N N E S S Y Board President

In 1924, IWS incorporated child development and behavioral health counseling into the primary care model. Since 1970, pediatric dentistry services have been provided to low-income children. Orthodontic care was introduced in 1991 and pediatric optometry in 1995. In 2015, IWS launched the Child-Centered Health and Advanced Therapies (CHAT) program for children with special needs. IWS welcomed the whole family, including men, in 2017. This impressive history of bringing innovative services to children and families continues each and every day.

A DAD’S SUCCESS STORY Nikita Patel, D.O. talks every day with individuals and families about the risk of diabetes and how to reverse a diagnosis of pre-diabetes. This is a subject she is more than happy to talk about.
“For many of my patients, I am an acting nutritionist.” Dr. Patel says, as she reflects on the dietary information and discussions about diet she has with many of her patients.
Recently, Dr. Patel helped a middle-aged husband get his uncontrolled diabetes back under control and “back to normal” after educating him about the dangers of diabetes and what he could do to prevent it.
“He was eating a high-carb diet and was not very active; he didn’t know that his lifestyle was unhealthy”, recounts Dr. Patel.
Dr. Patel suggested he add more fresh fruit and vegetables to his diet, reduce his carbohydrate intake, limit the amount of soda and sugary drinks he was consuming, and walk more often. By following those instructions, along with lots of follow-ups and 1:1 consultations with her, Dr. Patel’s patient lost significant weight in about three months.
“I think his wife might have helped”, Dr. Patel comments with a chuckle. The wonderful implication here is that patient education, consistent communication with a primary care provider, and a positive environment all create the best chances for positive changes, healthier families, and strong communities.

AUXIL IARY MESSAGE
It is such a thrill to have Auxiliary Members Minnie Sandstedt and Charlotte Shestokas being honored with the Champion for Children Award. These two women are indeed exceptional, but I am sure they would tell you that they are emblematic of all our Auxiliary members.
Minnie and Charlotte like their 600 plus counterparts from across greater Chicagoland, volunteer time, talent and treasure to enrich the lives of the patients of the Angel Harvey Family Health Center of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. We take the time to provide patient and neighborhood families with new and gently used coats through our Coat Drive held in conjunction with CD One Cleaners. In fact, last year we warmed over 500 children and parents with coats, mitten and hats.
We take time to organize an annual See Santa party for our young patients, to the delight of their entire family. We use our talents in fundraising to raise over $600,000 not only from contributions made by the Auxiliary Members, but also by our families and corporate friends.
Minnie Sandstedt joined the Auxiliary in 1959, Charlotte Shestokas in 1976. As you can imagine, the Infant Welfare Society has changed tremendously since then, most recently, opening its doors to the fathers in the community. Fundraising has certainly changed, too. Minnie and Charlotte spearheaded much more elaborate affairs, featured on the society pages and bringing together over 1,500 Auxiliary members. Currently, the individual Chapters of the Auxiliary host their own unique fundraising events. But the goal has remained the same: to support the tremendous work being done by Infant Welfare.
Just as Minnie and Charlotte have embraced change, so has the Auxiliary as a whole. From our earliest days helping to supply clean milk to children at stations throughout the city of Chicago to now having eight volunteers on the Board of Directors, the Auxiliary has answered the needs of the families of Infant Welfare since 1913. As we honor two of our long-term members, we welcome new Auxiliary members each year- those that will lead us into the next 105 years. We are indeed a strong community, ready to serve the healthy families the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago has long supported.
Sincerely,
C Y N T H I A S C H O L LAuxiliary President
