The HB-System, not a near miss ...
The HB-System is one of the mostsuccessful developments in liftingand material handling technology, combining the effectiveness of astationary hoist with the mobility of an overhead crane, efficientlyand cost-effectively.ABUS have all the resources ittakes to develop systems like theHB in-house: experience withhoists and overhead cranes, high-quality production facilities and,
perhaps most important of all, thedetermination to develop moreuser-friendly workplaces free fromunnecessary burdens. The task ofABUS was, and still is, to offer theHB-System with as many usefulfeatures as possible at as low acost as possible. Anyone whoneeds assistance with lifting andhandling loads at their place ofwork, in warehouses, workshops or factories, should have an ABUS
HB-System available, which meansthat these systems must be affor-dable. Today’s HB-Systems featurea combination of advanced techno-logy, economy, flexibility, qualityand ergonomics which has gainedfull recognition in our market. The secret of our success has beento fulfil the individual requirementsof each costumers application.

The ABUS HB-System offers tailor-made modular solutions. The components of the system are bothpractical and cost-effective and can be combined tobuild just the system which the application demands. All HB-Systems feature an extremely low-build design, ensuring that maximum hook height can be reached inthe space which is available. Three types of profilescover a load capacity range up to 2000 kg. All electricalconnections are made using an easy plug-in connectorsystem. And the system can be adapted and individually fittedto almost any type of room or ceiling design.

The practical design features of the ABUS HB-Systembring perceptible benefits for users and their applica-tions:
• With its modular design, the system can simply betailored to provide cost-effective solutions for users’applications.
• A wide variety of suspension designs are available, permitting installation in conditions which you wouldscarcely have thought possible.
• Load capacities can be defined in accordance with individual requirements, up to 2000 kg; later extension is often possible.
• The number of component parts is reduced to thebare minimum, simplifying erection, saving time andhelping to prevent errors – just what you need if yourown specialists are to erect the system.
• No special tools are required for erection.
• With the special plug-in connectors typical of ABUSsystems, electrical installation is also quick and safe.
• ABUS drives and hoists provide a variety of electricalfunctions for more rational, safer working – with lownoise, smooth starting and lifting and smooth swit-ching between speeds.
• In addition, all components are designed for opti-mum interaction. For example, a low headroomABUS electric chain hoist combined with a double rail trolley on an HB-System (types ZSB, ZHB, ZHB-X or ZHB-3) ensures optimum space utilisationand maximum hook height.
• The fundamental advantages of the ABUS HB-System continue to bear fruit in the period following initial investment. The system can be maintained, modified, modernised and uprated efficiently and cost-effectively.

Enclosed-track profile with trolley
Our masterpiece: the suspensionOur engineers have paid particularattention to the suspension, and forgood reasons too. The quality of thesuspension and connections is anessential feature in ensuring the quality and availability of the entireHB-System.A characteristic feature of the ABUSHB-System is a flexible suspensionusing ball-and-socket joints. Theselow-build systems are adjustable inheight and are therefore particularlyversatile. The pendulation motion ofthe suspension absorbs horizontalforces from the crane system, redu-cing loads on roof structures andbuildings.
ABUS has a whole range of con-nections for attaching HB-Systemsto ceilings or other elements ofbuildings. Together, the suspensionand the ceiling mount ensure thatan HB-System can be installed inalmost any conditions.
ABUS HB-SystemKeeping a high profile
Distinctive features: enclosed-track profilesAdvanced CAD1) and FEM2) systemswere used to design and optimisethe track profiles of the HB-System. The results are three types of profilecovering the entire load capacityrange of the HB-System up to 2000 kg. All the profiles are madefrom cold-rolled halves weldedtogether to form a high-grade enclo-sed-track profile, within which theload trolley is housed.
ABUS opted for enclosed-track pro-files because they effectively protectthe trolley running gear and alsooffer advantages in terms of main-tenance.They also have two additional majoradvantages. The favourable struc-tural design of the track girder system means that wide suspensionspacing is possible, even with highload capacities. And high-grade bolted joints warrant high jointfactors and improved load capacity.
In combination, these two featuressignificantly reduce the work in-volved in installing an HB-Systemand enhance the productivity of thesystem.Manual operation of cranes andtrolleys is almost effortless.

crane systems
The ABUS electric chain hoist usedin connection with double-girdercrane systems is built directly intothe crab frame without a suspen-sion eye. This will achieve optimumhook height in tight applications.
ABUS electric chain hoists All ABUS HB-Systems are fittedwith ABUS chain hoists ABUCom-pact. The new generation of ABU-Compact chain hoists feature afresh new design and convincingtechnical solutions. The 3 phase400 volt hoists units are available in three different sizes to reliablyhandle loads up to 2000 kg with a low-build design for optimum utilisation of the space availableand a precision lifting function forthe careful lifting and lowering ofsensitive goods. The small GMC hoist rounds off theABUCompact range. With infinitelyvariable lifting speed and a loadcapacity of 100 kg or 200 kg, thisunit, supplied ready for connectionto a 230 V power socket, is the ideal hoist for flexible and lowcapacity applications.
ABUS travel drivesWhen needed, the HBF frictionwheel drive provides the power for an HB-System. The drive motorhas a smooth performance curvefor soft starting and braking.Where loads in excess of 500 kgare handled and the crane girder is longer than 6 m, the HBF drive isan almost indispensable compo-nent of the system. These compactunits can be integrated in the trolleyitself if a double girder trolley isused, saving approach dimensions.
Fig.ABUCompact GM4
The motor and the gear unit are ofmodular design, allowing us to pro-duce a wide variety of versions forlifting speeds up to 20 m/min andFEM groups up to 4m at attractiveprices. The chain hoists have a number offeatures which are particularly bene-ficial in terms of reduced mainte-nance requirements; long-life brakelinings (normally, adjustment is onlyrequired after 1 million full-load bra-king operations); permanently lubri-cated precision gearbox; adjustablesliding clutch; specially hardenedlow-wear chain; plug-in connectorsfor easy installation and maintenan-ce and many other features.Where single girder trolleys areused, the chain hoist is simply suspended from the trolley and isready for operation as soon as theconnectors have been plugged in.
