Recent parental surveys reveal again the high level of
satisfaction that parents have with the education that
Hazelwick is providing. 99% of parents agree that,
“My child is taught well at Hazelwick,” with 98.5%
stating that they would recommend Hazelwick to
other parents.
Welcome to the final Newsletter of the academic year. Once again, this newsletter is
full of information about the wide range of activities that our school community
engages in. Here at Hazelwick, we offer our students amazing opportunities, including
the chance to participate in extra-curricular sport, drama, art, science and technology
and visits both in this country and abroad. Visitors to our school, and people
encountered on trips and activities outside school, frequently make immensely positive
comments about the attitude and behaviour of our students; they really are a credit to
our school.
The last few weeks have also seen a number of celebration events where student
achievement has been recognised and acclaimed. Our Awards Evenings at school have
been enjoyed by parents, students and staff alike and I have invited the students with
the highest achievement points in each of Years 7-10, and Year 12 students with the
most congratulations on their reports throughout the year, to join me for celebration
breakfasts in my office.

News, Events & Activities... GCSE Food and Nutrition News
The Year 10 Food & Nutrition groups have worked incredibly hard
this year and have all cooked a range of impressive and tasty dishes.
Here are just a few…
Miss Maides
A Level Food Technology
On 25 June the A level Food technology group visited London Borough Market.
Their task was to investigate new and exciting food products, to help inspire their
coursework cooking tasks.
Each student was given £5 to spend on an ingredient or product that they had never used or
seen before. Their next task will be to cook with the ingredients that they bought.

News, Events & Activities... Year 9 Study Skills Day Trip to London
First we went to Three Bridges Train Station to catch the Victoria Train which took us to London. We got
on a bus to Covent Garden and we saw a lady singing and then went to the ice cream shop and got an ice
cream. We had lunch at McDonald’s then entered the London Dungeon.
It was fun.
Austin Talman
The best bit of our trip was when we went to the London Dungeons. This was the first time I've been in
the Dungeons and it turned out to be amazing because the actors played their role very well and we didn’t
really know what to expect next. The best part was the end of the Dungeons because I didn’t know what
was going to happen on the ride. The other best bit was when we went on the boat across the Thames
because it was nice to see the view of everything around London.
It was a very good day!
Kayleigh Occomore
The best bit of the trip was
when we entered the London
Dungeons. First I was terrified.
I did not want to go in but then
I manned up. Near the
entrance there were couple of
people dressed as Jesters, and
as people went in they were
trying to scare people; I didn’t
even blink.
Daniils Karamiseves
We got our tickets to get
on the train to London
Victoria. We saw the tall
building, The Shard. It was
good because we went
across the long blue
Hungerford Bridge to the
South Bank.
Gabriel Strachan
My day out with Study
Skills was a great day out.
London Dungeons was
the best bit. I mostly
enjoyed the ride at the
end. Overall it was a good
day out and I didn’t have
to be in school doing
lessons.
Laiqah Khan
My journey to London was fun. I really enjoyed everything but l mostly liked
The London Dungeons. l thought it was quite fun, spooky and scary. I really
liked the water ride and the drop ride called Extreme. I also enjoyed the live
performances, especially the lady who was standing still like a gold statue.

News, Events & Activities... Awards Evenings
During June and July three very successful Awards evenings were
held for Years 8, 9 and 10. In total, 705 nominations were
received across the Year groups, with 152 awards being made.
These evenings recognised the fantastic effort made over the
course of this academic year by students across the year groups.
Teachers from the awarding subject areas were able to explain
why each student had won their award. Recurring themes over
the three evenings were: attention to detail, resilience, support
for the learning of others, hard work, and challenging themselves
to exceed minimum expectation.
This year a particular focus was given to the Year 10 St
Catherine’s Enterprise Challenge Team, who raised close to
£7,000 for the Hospice. Consideration was given by Giles
Tomsett (Chief Executive of St Catherine’s) and Ms Fearon to
the skills, qualities and attitudes required to be as successful as
this team had proved to be. The team members won a special
award recognising the contribution they had made to the school
and local community. This award was sponsored by the Crawley
Lions, who were immensely impressed by the whole evening and
have vowed to return and support the event next year.
In addition to the Crawley Lions, we were delighted to receive
the support of local businesses Creative Pod, Homes Partnership
and Richard Place Dobson, all of whom attended one of the
evenings and sponsored the awards. If you would like to
sponsor these awards in the future, please make contact with Mr
Palmer, Deputy Headteacher.

News, Events & Activities... Art Show
Last month saw the results of all the hard work by the GCSE, AS and A Level Art & Design students in our
annual “Art Show”. Friends, family and staff were all invited to the opening night of one of our strongest Art
shows yet. It was a real delight to see how proud students were of their work and seeing them realising how
strong the work looked. The AS level and A level exhibition consisted of a wide range of photography work,
installation work, 3D work, graphics work, drawing and painting. The students themselves were involved in
hanging their own work for the show, showcasing work from coursework and final exam pieces.
We wish them all the luck in gaining the exam results they worked hard for and are hoping for in the
summer! Many of our A level students have already gained places on Art Foundation courses or on degree
courses in various chosen art fields.

News, Events & Activities... STEM Fest
Big Bang Fair South East
On 30 June, Hazelwick STEM Club, along with 32 Year 7 students, visited the ‘Big Bang Fair South East’. This
is a fun, action-packed day for over 5,000 young people aged 9-19 and is an opportunity for the Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) community to come together to enthuse and inspire
young people about college and university courses and careers in STEM.
Our STEM Club presented projects that they have been working on since January and took part in the first
round of the National Science and Engineering Competition. They faced three rounds of judging from
important figures in the world of STEM. Our students were calm and confident and the judges were clearly
impressed by the ingenuity of their projects and the hard work they have put in to them.
Meanwhile, our Year 7 students explored the festival, taking part in different activities and learning about
STEM careers. Highlights included: learning about the genetics of superheroes, meeting reptiles and
amphibians, and making skin and jumping beans!
At the end of the day, a prize-giving ceremony was held where we found out the winners of the prestigious
awards on offer. I am very pleased to announce that Shivam Patel, Krishen Mistry and Nirav Nayee won two
prizes for their project ‘PiYota’. As well as being awarded the ‘Doosan Prize for Teamwork’ they also came
first in their category for round one of the National Science and Engineering Competition. This is a fantastic
achievement and means that the group will be taking part in the grand final in Birmingham next year.
Well done, Shivam, Krishen and Nirav!

News, Events & Activities... The Enigma and Bletchley Park
On 1 July 2015 we welcomed the Enigma into school. Organised by the Computer Science department,
the day allowed groups of students to engage with the machine and have a real insight into the Second
World War.
Due to the recent biopic of Alan Turing and The Imitation Game, the Bletchley Park Enigma outreach
programme has gained massive popularity, so our students were very lucky to have had the opportunity to
see this machine.
In the session, students learnt about different ciphers and codes. They had an opportunity to crack some
simple codes and ciphers/codes in action. One student stated: ‘It was so cool to be able to use the
machine and actually experience something that was used by the Nazis in naval Germany.” The machine
brought with it a range of emotions, as it branded the Nazi swastika so neatly engraved into it, and
represented some of the darkest times in our human history.
In the afternoon, we were joined by a class of students from Tanbridge House School in Horsham. They
engaged in the session with one of our GCSE Computing classes. The two classes worked on tasks
together, showing real unity and engagement. It was great to see the session reaching as many students as
possible and allowing two schools to come together.
The day was enjoyed by all, including staff who joined the students who participated. We will definitely be
inviting them back again!

News, Events & Activities... MFL Trip to Northgate Primary School
Being given the opportunity to teach Spanish at Northgate Primary school was such a brilliant experience. I
had the pleasure of teaching three lovely classes - two from Year 1 and the other from Year 3. We walked
into the classroom and they knew nothing about the language but by the time we'd left they were able to
recite the numbers back to us in Spanish. Knowing that I'd helped them achieve this knowledge was such a
special feeling. All round a great opportunity.
Rebecca Foster - 10CSA
On 29 June, a brave group of Year 10 students set off for Northgate Primary School to teach Spanish and
French to pupils from Year 1 up to Year 6. Our students wrote their own lesson plans and prepared their
own resources, having considered issues such as learning objectives, differentiation, extension tasks and, of
course, how to enthuse their pupils! As expected, our students acquitted themselves very well, and faced
their classes with amazing confidence and calmness!
It was wonderful seeing some of our most able linguists delivering their knowledge in such creative and fun
ways. Well done to all those who represented the school; I could definitely see a couple of potential
teachers amongst you!
Ms Gratton
I found the trip enlightening. It taught me not only how to communicate with younger children, but how to
break a complex language down so it was understandable for those who had no prior knowledge of Spanish.
I learnt how hard it is for teachers, who teach Spanish, to explain how the language ‘works’ and to come up
with activities that are effective and interesting for the students. Furthermore, I got to experience how
younger children learn and work within their classrooms and with each other. I feel that I gained leadership
and communication skills, as I had to teach Spanish for a 30 minute period to smaller children in a way that
they would understand but not find patronising or boring. It was a great experience and very useful to me!

News, Events & Activities... Goethe Institute Trip
On Friday 10 July, we took a group of GCSE German students to the Goethe Institute in London to take
part in a series of German language workshops.
Sophie Linturn (10DSA) put together this short report:
‘We enjoyed the overall experience of learning new skills at the Goethe Institute. The day consisted of two
workshop sessions, the first exploring ways of learning through drama and the second through sounds –
both providing enriching experiences. We enjoyed the workshops, as they not only offered alternative ways
of learning German, but also allowed us to interact with each other and have fun.’
We were extremely proud of all the students, who showed great enthusiasm and creativity throughout the
day. Well done to all who took part and thank you to Mrs Strachan for organising the visit.

News, Events & Activities... Year 7 Congratulations Trip to Chessington
On Wednesday 8 July 230 Year 7 students had a fantastic day out for their congratulations trip to
Chessington World of Adventures. It really was a good day which everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
Special thanks must go to Mrs Dennett (Year 7 Administrator) for organising everything so well.

Cambridge Chemistry Challenge
Last month, 12 Hazelwick Chemistry A Level students took part in the 'Cambridge Chemistry Challenge'.
This is an annual competition devised by Cambridge University with the aim of stretching and challenging
chemistry students. Our students sat a gruelling 90-minute exam paper, with questions on the obscure
concept of 'tetraoxygen' and also skeletal formula of compounds. The level of difficulty was significantly
beyond what is expected at AS and A2 Level. Our students gave it their best shot and even a low score is
considered an achievement. Two of our students, Kieron Southall and Kieran Elson, did well enough to be
awarded a 'Copper' certificate, of which they should be very proud! The next challenge will be the
Chemistry Olympiad in January.

News, Events & Activities... 3D Printing Workshop
Year 10 Product Designers attended a 3D printing workshop. Students were given the opportunity to watch
a 3D printer in action and to undertake a design challenge. This has given students a fantastic opportunity
to understand advances in technology, new materials and contemporary links to industry.
Miss Jones
Technology After-school Club
It’s been a fantastic year for the Technology After-school Club. Students from KS3 have designed and
manufactured some highly creative and professional practical outcomes and should be extremely proud of
their achievements!
Technology Club will be running again in the new academic year with some new and exciting projects!

House Update... We have reached the end of the first term of this House year, and there has been a lot going on. Last week
was the House Charity and Activity week. The House Charities for whom money is raised are as follows:
Anderson – Olive Tree
Bamber – Cancer Research UK
Bronte – Young Minds
Brunel – Unicef
Fleming – Great Ormond Street Hospital
Wilberforce – Macmillan Cancer Research
These are all excellent causes and our students really got behind them, raising over £230 across the two 20
minute cake sales. After the cake sales, our students had energy to burn, so they took part in our second
House Activities week. Following the success of the November event, which included Basketball Free
Throw, House Quiz and Pictionary, this July edition had Years 7 and 8 and Years 9 and 10 working together
in Obstacle Relays, Charades, Spelling Bees and a Tug of War. It was great to see our new House Leaders
interacting with Year 7 and 8 and developing their leadership skills by supporting the running of the event.
Our House Leaders have been instrumental in working with the Heads of House to support and arrange
the events this term. We are delighted to offer these leadership opportunities to them and be able to
watch them thrive with the challenges and responsibility. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again
in September, with more contests, activities and opportunities than ever before. We will also look forward
to appointing our 18 House Captains from the new Year 12 students to lead the Sports, Charity and
Student Voice Committees.

Sport... Hazelwick Leaders Celebration Breakfast
In July, the Hazelwick sports leaders were treated to a celebration breakfast. The breakfast was a thank
you for all their hard work this year. The leaders have helped with a number of different primary events,
including sports days, cross country, rounders and the delivery of gifted and talented sessions.
Throughout the year the students have been great ambassadors for Hazelwick School. Thank you!

Hazelwick host Primary Rounders Tournament
On Friday 10 July, Hazelwick hosted the annual primary school rounders tournament. A lovely afternoon
saw fierce competition between four schools: Milton Mount, Three Bridges, Northgate and
Maidenbower. Each team played every other team in a round robin format. Eventual winners in the Year
5/6 age group were Northgate, whilst in the Year 3/4 age group Three Bridges were the winners. Mrs
Reynolds would like to say a massive thank you to the Year 9 Hazelwick leaders, without whom the
event could not have happened.

On Wednesday 8 July our talented athletes from Year 10 were treated to a raft-building afternoon in
Tilgate Park. The students decided to divide themselves boys/girls to see who could build the best raft
and win a race across the lake. Both groups came up with the same design for their rafts and, although
the girls were considered winners in construction, the boys won the race across the lake. A great
afternoon was had by all and some valuable team-building skills were learnt along the way.

Holly Talbut-Smith signs for USA University Carson Newman
Holly Talbut-Smith (13LBK) will be heading to the USA this summer to take up a prestigious dual athletic
and football scholarship. Holly will be joining Carson Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee
and will arrive in August to study and represent the Eagles soccer and track teams. Holly will have the
opportunity to combine her University studies alongside playing high level football and competing in top
class track events for the next four years.
Holly said: “I chose to study in the USA as I felt it was a great opportunity to combine my degree with my
passion for sport. I am most looking forward to the challenge of testing myself against players and
athletes from the US and all over the world, whilst studying for my degree at the same time. The
opportunity to meet new people and experience a new culture is extremely exciting and something I have
been working hard towards. The university looks amazing with great facilities and the sunny weather is a
bonus too. The football and athletics coaches are very enthusiastic and positive and they have all made
me feel very excited to go to Carson Newman.”
Good luck, Holly!

Spotlight on Safeguarding... Recent press stories have highlighted issues relating to safeguarding and the well-being of young people. We
all share responsibility within the community to do all that we possibly can to keep our children safe. At
Hazelwick we have always had the safety of our students at the forefront of everything we do.
As part of our continued focus on safeguarding, we will be making parent and carers aware, through our
newsletter, of the many and varied issues that effect all young people in today’s society.
An excellent external resource for adults and young people regarding children’s well being and safety is the

Crest Awards Evening
On 14 July, a Crest Awards evening was held at Hazelwick, to celebrate the success of our STEM club,
Engineering Education Scheme (EES) and Student Robotics students. The CREST Awards scheme is run by
the British Science Association and recognises the achievements of students in completing STEM-related
project work. It operates on three levels – bronze, silver and gold. Three groups from Hazelwick STEM
Club were awarded bronze certificates for their projects on topics ranging from games consoles to robots
designed to complete household chores! Our Sixth Form Student Robotics team and EES team were
awarded gold certificates, the highest standard! All groups presented their projects to a captivated audience
who were all extremely impressed with the ingenuity of each project and the hard work that the students had
put in. We are extremely proud of all the students involved. Mrs Ross
