When asked about effectively trainingemployees, Ron Witt a Catamount Con-sulting employee and certified MSHA in-structor with over 24 years of experi-ence had this to offer:
“The key word here is effective. Weknow that tasks are different. We needto remember that so are people. Effec-tive task training will most likely be dif-ferent for different people even thoughthe task is the same. There are manyfactors to understand regarding task
training. Task training is basically “In-structions”. One factor for example, isunderstanding when “instructions”stopped and “practice” started. Taketask training for operating mobileequipment. There are the instructionson what levers do what, how to inspectit properly and all the hazards related tothose instructions. Then, there’s the“practice” of learning the controls andcharacteristics of the equipment. Thatpart is not really “task training” it is
practice. Our job when we do “effective”task training is to make sure the in-structions are comprehensive enough toallow workers to practice safely.”
OSHA requires that all lift trucks be-fore they are run, be inspected daily orbefore each shift for operations that runequipment in shifts. Inspecting theequipment before it is run helps ensurethat the vehicle is being properly main-tained and in safe working order. Pre-operation inspections don’t take verylong to complete and they reduce therisk of injury to employees and damageto the equipment.
Below is an example of a checklist fora forklift.
This inspection checklist is used tohelp identify safety and operational readi-ness of the machine you are operating.
Your daily inspection should include,but not be limited to the following:
Before starting• Check for proper levels of engine oil,
brake fluid, hydraulic oil etc;• Check all appropriate sight glasses;
and• Visually inspect tires for proper in-
flation, wheels and rims for missing orloose lug nuts and cracks.
If there is any abnormal bulging im-mediately move away and contact main-tenance personnel
• Visually inspect the underside of the
machine for indications of damage andleakage;
• Make sure the access ladder is freeof debris and in general good condition;
• Visually check booms, forks etc. forcracks and other wear and tear;
• Check service sticker and let mainte-nance personnel know if you are close toneeding your machine serviced (usuallyat 20 hours and again at 10 hours); and
• Allow equipment to warm up 10-15minutes before operation
Before operation• Check horn;• Operate mast to total height;• Check all gauges and indicators for
proper reading;• Make sure windows and mirrors are
clean;• Remove or secure trash, tools or any
loose objects that could jam a control;• Ensure that the area around the
machine is clear, and check backupalarm and braking system before opera-tion begins; and
• Complete required inspection reports.Report mechanical problems and safetyhazards immediately, and most of all, donot operate an unsafe machine. Proceedwith caution and follow all surfacehaulage safety rules and procedures.

Local historians, basedin the north central re-gions of the CanadianProvince ofSaskatchewan recordthat in the very earlydecades of the currentcentury there was a busysawmill and a heavyequipment dealer group,both in the startup phase
and both achieving a rec-ognized portion of suc-cess.
This customer successstory will not only re-count the history of thesetwo companies but moreimportantly that of a pairof Volvo wheel loaders…and certainly nobody as-sociated with NorSaskForest Products LimitedPartnership nor RedheadEquipment Ltd. wouldwant to change or eventamper with this ‘wheelloader’ bit of history.
First the history part ofour story. In the spring of2001, a modest, family-owned company that wassuccessfully specializingin the sale and service ofagriculture and mediumduty construction equip-
ment was awarded theprovince wide franchisefor the relatively ‘new toCanada’ Volvo Construc-tion Equipment line ofheavy equipment. Thiswas the opportunity thatRegina, Saskatchewanbased Redhead Equip-ment had been lookingfor to take them takethem to the next levelwhile rewarding themwith a positive return oninvestment.
A few hundred kilome-ters away, in the forestryresources rich area ofMeadow Lake,Saskatchewan, NorSaskForest Products a moder-ately sized, very produc-tive sawmill operationwas also breaking intothe big leagues and were
in need of a wheel loaderthat would fit their de-manding requirements.
Enter Chuck Miles, ayoung customer servicerepresentative who hadjust successfully com-pleted his professionaland intense Volvo Con-struction Equipmenttraining in Asheville, NC.NorSask Forest Productswas in Chuck’s territo-ry… as a matter of fact,as he tells it, in those ear-ly days all of the Provinceof Saskatchewan was inhis territory. Chuck wasaware that RedheadEquipment had placedtheir first order with Vol-vo Construction Equip-ment and that order in-cluded a Volvo L70Dwheel loader.
Calling on NorSask For-est Products, he learnedthat this busy lumbersawmill was looking toadd a new wheel loader totheir growing heavy equip-ment fleet. The competi-tion was strong for this or-der, but Chuck was alsoaware that NorSask had alittle experience with Volvowheel loaders as they hadrecently purchased a usedVolvo L70C with whichthey were very pleased.
As a result of this posi-tive experience when heapproached the companythey had no hesitation insigning a purchase orderfor the new Volvo L70Dgiving Redhead Equip-ment a quick start withVolvo… much to the dis-may of the other regionalheavy equipment dealers.
The resultsToday, almost 30,000
productive hours later,that first Volvo L70Dsold by Redhead Equip-ment is still working dai-ly in NorSask’s MeadowLake operation.
Now, almost 30,000hours on the meter of awheel loader may not behistorically significant,but 30,000 hours of hardlabor, in what could bebest described as ex-tremely difficult workingconditions and havingthe complete drivetrainremaining untouchedand intact certainly is.
“We have never had aproblem with this loader,”states Chuck Brander,heavy equipment mainte-
nance supervisor for Nor-Sask. “It continues towork every shift and wehave never had to do any-thing to it, the drivetrainis all original, it justkeeps running. Our re-sults with Volvo havebeen very good.”
It’s worthy to note thatthe company’s slightlyolder Volvo L70C hasworked right alongsideits younger counterpartamassing almost asmany operational hoursand only has had thefuel injectors replaced.Other than that, its dri-vetrain remains virtuallyuntouched.

ucts specializes in theproduction of eight andnine foot stud lumber,and has a capacity of140,000,000-board-feetannually. Over fifty per-cent of their product isshipped to and consumedin the midwest USA withthe balance being sold toCanadian retailers andbrokers. Currently, as aresult of market condi-tions the plant is runningat about fifty percent ca-pacity but that is expect-ed to experience a dra-matic change for the pos-itive as the global homebuilding market read-justs. In this economy, running a small businesssuccessfully is quite an accomplishment. MarkKrawiec has done that and more. Mark owns andoperates Krawiec Tree Service in Harmony, RI, whichdoes everything from land clearing to urban treeremoval. In addition, he has five land managementcorporations, most of which involve creating andrenting business space. None of these successeswould be possible however, if it were not for his fleetof tree removal equipment.
He says that having the right equipment hasenabled him to take on almost any job and handle itefficiently and professionally. It also allows him toprofit from each aspect of a job he undertakes. Even the eighty-footoak trees, in his own yard that came down duringSuperstorm Sandy proved beneficial. He cut and splitevery foot for firewood.
During that storm, he had crews clearing downedtrees in southern Rhode Island. Within hours, theywere able to remove storm damaged trees, cuttingand chipping the downed trees, using their Bandit200 chipper. Some of the trees that needed to beremoved were what was left of his eighty-foot spruces.
Over the years, Krawiec has worked on a widevariety of projects. Along the way, he has acquiredspecialized equipment to facilitate the new jobs. Hisfavorite piece of equipment is a two year old Alteccrane, a unit with a 137-foot boom. It can pick up aload weighing 40 tons and lift it over obstacles thatmight hinder other models. He says his crew appreci-ates having it because it is fast, efficient and makestheir work easier. Krawiec likes it because it allowshim to take urban and suburban jobs where there islimited or no access to the actual work site. He sayshe has removed trees from back yards without evermoving the crane from the front yard.
Another instance where having the right equipmentfor the job paid off, was in 2009. Krawiec wascontracted to create a wildlife habitat at Joslin Farmin Scituate, RI, a property under the management ofProvidence Water. Using his company’s TimberJack530 Delimber, Krawiec’s crew cleared seventy acres ofmature forest making the way for native grasslandand early successional species, to thrive.
He says that at the time of this project, diesel fuelhad jumped to around $5 a gallon. As a way to helpabsorb some of that overhead expense, Krawiec wasable to sell every bit of wood they harvested as cord-wood. They turned the wood chips into mulch, whichalso provided them with additional revenue.

larger projects as well. He has worked on bridge andhighway projects, state contracts and FEMA jobs.
Krawiec says that finding the right equipment canbe a time consuming process. There is a dearth oflarge equipment dealers in southern New England, sohe usually begins his search on the internet. He saysthat he finds that since some of the “local” dealers arelocated up to 200 miles away, it is often cheaper toship a piece from across the country than it is to pickup a “local” piece.
When he finds a piece he likes, he does what ittakes to acquire it. For example, before purchasinghis Bandit 1850 Track Chipper, he flew out toMichigan. There, he toured both the Bandit andMorbark facilities. When he found the unit at theprice that he liked, he bought it.
There are times, however, when his equipmentpurchases are nothing short of serendipitous. Oneday he was at ECR and ran into a colleague who wasretiring and looking to unload a Morbark chipperwith hydraulic winch. The chipper’s 24 x 30-inchopening allows it take entire tree tops. Since the sell-er was an over the road trucker, it took Krawiec threemonths to finalize the deal. Just the same, he thinksit was worth the wait.
As important as the right equipment is, it is not thesole secret to Krawiec’s success. He is a firm believerin customer service. “We want to leave them happy,”he says. “The first step in accomplishing that goal ishiring the right people.”
When it comes to bidding a job, Krawiec likes to usegood judgement. If he’s going to lose money on a job,he refuses it, whether that means turning down aprivate landowner, a commercial renter, or a statejob. Many businesses go under despite the fact thatthey are always “busy;” Krawiec doesn’t want to beone of them. Once he does take a job, he takes cus-tomer service very seriously. He personally shows upat every job, managing the communication betweenthe customer and his crew.
Krawiec believes that his clients choose KrawiecTree Service because they know they will get the “jobdone right.” Doing the job right includes respectingthe property. Krawiec’s crews use mats and plywoodon lawns to prevent damage from the equipment. Asone employee says, “When we pull out, you don’t evenknow we were there.”
That fastidiousness pays off. Clients regularlyinvite the crews in for coffee, donuts and an old fash-ioned visit. And his customers pay the greatestcompliment: they call him back for repeat work. Themajority of Krawiec’s jobs are either previouscustomers with more jobs or new customers referredby previous customers.
A “new venture”Krawiec’s original passion for tree work started in
high school, and it hit its full stride in the 70’s whenhe started clearing land to build his first home. In1992, he bought his first log truck, which he stilluses every day. It was then that he started his ownbusiness. Eight years ago Krawiec began the first ofhis five land management corporations. With thereturn on most investments in this economy at a lowlevel, Krawiec saw land management as an opportu-nity with a potentially high return.
Krawiec handles all aspects of his land manage-ment corporations from clearing and building manyof the plazas to selecting renters and negotiatingleases. The success of this segment of his operationhas come at a good time because the slow economyhas begun affecting Krawiec’s Tree Service. This pastyear, was the first year Krawiec can remember notworking straight up until Christmas.

Wechange the oil and filtersalong with all coolant ele-ments every two hundredand fifty hours and allfuel, transmission and hy-draulic filters every fivehundred hours. The onlytime we depart from Vol-vo’s recommended main-tenance schedule is in thewinter. It can be minus 40Fahrenheit for days herein the winter and we willchange to a synthetic oiland grease package then.Other than that, we justfollow Volvo’s operator andmaintenance schedule.”

WEST FARGO, ND — Bobcat Compa-ny has announced a plan for Tier 4 so-lutions that include a Doosan built en-gine added to some of its equipment lineup for 2014. Development of the new Tier 4 compliant engine was a collabora-tion between Bobcat, Doosan and someof the world’s top engineering consult-ants and engine design firms — Ricar-do, FEV and others.
“These new Tier 4 solutions com-bine Doosan’s 50 years of engine build-ing experience with Bobcat’s 50 years ofcompact equipment leadership,” said R
ich Goldsbury, Bobcat president. “Add to that the combined experience of our other partners, and you have more than 200 years of experience in engine de-sign and development and compact equipment expertise.”
The Doosan built engine is a non-DPF(diesel particulate filter) engine. Bob-
cat engineers have worked together withDoosan, and the engineering consult-
ants and engine design firms to devel-op these engines that offer non-DPF Tier 4 technology.
“With these additional engines, Bob-cat will be a market leader in non-DPF Tier 4 technology,” Goldsbury said. “Ourcustomers and dealers prefer it, and itminimizes long term Tier 4 parts and maintenance expenses.”
Doosan — Bobcat’s parent compa-ny — started building engines in 1958,and since then has developed engines across several industries for construc-tion and industrial equipment, power plants, ships and automobiles.

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ — A quick scan around therecycling yard in South Amboy, NJ, tells you thatClyde Cameron is a value conscious equipmentbuyer.
Here, at one of the two Beacon Scrap Iron & Metalfacilities south of Newark, NJ, the fleet covers a widemix of varied equipment makes, models and vintages.Against this setting, a brand new 830 R-HD scraphandler in fresh SENNEBOGEN green stands out.
Clyde Cameron III takes the lead in equipmentpurchases for his family’s 40 year old business. Heexplains, “It seems the only thing you can’t buy usedthese days is a good material handler on tracks. Theyare rare, people normally use them until they are nogood. There are lots of wheeled machines around, buteverything we saw on tracks had too many hours forthe price. When we compared the cost of a new SEN-NEBOGEN, it really split the difference between aused machine and the new cost from other manufac-turers.”
Purpose built saves costsCameron often works closely with Dominick
Vecchiarelli of Binder Machinery when he’s sourcingequipment. Binder is the SENNEBOGEN distributorin the region, and Vecchiarelli believes that thepurpose built design of the green machines makesthem the more cost efficient choice for Beacon’s oper-ation. “When you convert an excavator into a materi-al handler, even at the factory, there’s an addedexpense. It’s expensive to begin with and then it’sexpensive in fuel. SENNEBOGEN machines are madefor this job. You aren’t paying for a dirt machine, thenpaying to make it do something else.”
Cameron says, when he began looking at newmachines, he was immediately attracted toSENNEBOGEN’s purpose built features. “All the same
size class machines that I saw were around 20percent higher in cost,” he reports, “and they stillcouldn’t do the same job. Not only did we get a bettermachine, we got it for a better price!”
Running a tight operationThe engineering of the 830 R-HD helped Clyde deal
with being squeezed on space as well as beingsqueezed on costs. Between the South Amboy facilityand the firm’s other location in nearby Freehold, NJ,Beacon Scrap Iron & Metal processes in excess of5000 tons of ferrous and over a million pounds ofnon-ferrous per month. In June this year, the SouthAmboy yard was holding a lot of 15,000 ton of ferrousin reserve stock, waiting for the market to offer morefavorable pricing. On top of that, traffic lanes werebusy with a steady stream of residential and lightcommercial scrap. Furthermore, Beacon maintainshundreds of roll off boxes throughout its service area,and can receive between 400 and 500 customers intotal every day between both locations.
The two yards, which also share the use of a fullyportable shear/baler/logger, are each situated on justfour acres. In this space, they need to accommodateprocessing, stockpiling and loading. Today, both sitesnow rely on an 830 R-HD for loading trailers andfeeding the shear.
“We especially like the SENNEBOGEN units’ abilityto operate close-in,” says Cameron. “Some of ourolder cranes had three piece booms for tight quarters,but they are hard to find anymore. When we have abig pile like we do now, we have to load 15 to 25trucks a day. The 830 has a two piece boom and stickthat can load close in and it has good reach for itssize. It also lifts the same weight over all sides so

there is less need for it to move around.”A family affair
Deciding on the new SENNEBOGEN machines wasa carefully considered purchase for the family busi-ness. Clyde Cameron represents the third generationof the family to take part in managing Beacon’s busi-ness. His father, also named Clyde, and his grandfa-ther William Smith Sr., Beacon’s founder, were alsoinvolved in different stages of the purchase decision.“I was put in charge of Research & Development forall our new equipment — though I do more researchthan development!” he admits. Active in the companyfor the past 11 years, he has served time operatingevery piece of machinery in the fleet. He still spendstime operating machinery in the yard, but also workswith equipment suppliers to plan the company’s nextmoves. “I’m looking at a few new pieces to add. Nextwe will probably need a second guillotine shear, forincreased capacity.”
Hands-on inspectionWhen Cameron began to zero-in on the 830 R-HD,
he visited another recycler in Staten Island to see itswheeled counterpart on the job. He was accompaniedthere by his father, who leads the servicing of theBeacon fleet. After taking turns operating themachine, both men were impressed. “We knew theywere good machines, because every yard has themand you never hear any complaints,” says theyounger man. “At the demo, my father could see howwell built they are and how easy they would be tomaintain — everything is right there for you for serv-icing. Having ‘no computers’ on board helps, too!”
The family also gave consideration to the largerSENNEBOGEN 835 R-HD scrap handler butCameron’s grandfather, who remains active in the
company, agreed that the smaller unit met theprice/value equation for their operation. Cameronobserved that “…it’s a 90,000-pound machine thatoutlifts, outreaches and moves faster than the120,000-pound machines they replaced… it does alot for its size!”
The pair of 830 R-HD machines they purchasedfrom Binder are fitted with one-yard Rotobec four tinegrapples and with 30-inch Winkle scrap magnetsused for cleanup duties. The purchase also includeda 60-inch Winkle magnet used for loading selectedferrous and irony aluminum materials. “We’re alsoone of the top 10 aluminum buyers in this area,”Cameron notes.
The value of trustDominick Vecchiarelli has been Binder’s represen-
tative for 14 of the 20 plus years that the distributorhas been supplying equipment to Beacon. He hasknown Clyde Cameron since Clyde was eight yearsold. Cameron recalls, “I always asked every salesmanfor equipment brochures, but Dominick was the onlyone who brought me some!” Binder also suppliesKomatsu machinery and a wide variety of attach-ments as well as much of the used equipment inBeacon’s fleet. “Even if Binder doesn’t have the typeof equipment I need, I know Dominick will help mefind it.”
After working with Cameron on the selection of theSENNEBOGEN machines, Vecchiarelli is quitecomplimentary of Cameron’s purchasing process.“Clyde’s questions about the equipment are those ofan experienced operator and an experienced buyer.He has lived and worked around this machinery sincehe was just a child, and the things he asks me can bejust amazing.” The trust between the two was an
important factor in Cameron’s decision to go with thenew SENNEBOGEN scrap handlers instead of otherequipment brands.
After running the 830 R-HD machines for severalmonths, Cameron and his family are pleased withtheir decision. As Cameron reports, “When we wereusing our 320 Cats with demo grapples to load lightiron or #1 steel, it took about an hour to load a truck.Now, I’m timing it out at about 10 to 15 minutes fora load of steel. The 830s are a lot more fuel efficientthan our previous cranes, too. We’ve been able toaccomplish a lot more in less time, for less cost!”

Contractors and representatives from municipali-ties from all over upstate New York and portions ofNew England are making plans to attend the NewYork Hard Hat Expo 2013 at the New York StateFairgrounds in Syracuse, March 6-7. Last year, withthe weather being unseasonably warm and sunny,approximately 8,500 visitors kept exhibitors busythroughout the entire event. Companies likeCaterpillar, John Deere, Case, New Holland,Komatsu, Kobelco, PowerScreen, J.C.B. and otherswere among those on hand for the show!

“We had a near record crowd,” said Trade ShowManager, Ken Maring, following last year’s show. “Thebeautiful weather made it much easier for people toattend. Some years, winter weather is still very mucha factor during the show. We were happy to see ourshow goers enjoying themselves the way that they didlast year. Since 1988, the New York Hard Hat Expo has beenthe premier showcase for construction equipmentand services in the Northeast market area. Over theyears, the Hard Hat Expo has continued to growbecause of its quality exhibitors and the addition ofnew events for attendees. The Expo located at the NYFairgrounds in Syracuse since its inception, hasgrown to fill both the Horticulture Building and theCenter of Progress Building, the main exhibit hall forthe event. Additionally, outdoor exhibits line thestreet in front of the Center of Progress Building,where a closed off area designated for this purposeduring the two day event. Similarly, the Skid SteerRodeo, a favorite of vendors and attendees alike, isconducted outdoors as well.

and I commend you ondoing your research andexploring your options!There are plenty of ad-vantages to using bothon-premise software anda SaaS (which stands forSoftware as a Service)version of the software, soit really depends on whatworks best for your com-pany. Let’s take a closerlook at each.
On PremiseWhen you choose on-
premise software, you aretypically buying the soft-ware. Most companieswho choose this optionhave the IT infrastructureand resources in place torun the software internal-ly on their own comput-ers. This means havingcomputers, servers, anetwork and sometimeseven a tech person or de-partment to make surethat everything is run-ning smoothly. Once thesoftware is paid off, mostcompanies typically thenpay an annual mainte-nance fee that covers up-dates and phone supporteach year. Not only do
contractors then havecomplete control overtheir hardware and theirsoftware, but they alsofully own it, too.SaaS
On the other hand, se-lecting a SaaS solutionmeans that you’ll mostlikely pay on a subscrip-tion based method. Noth-ing is installed on yourpersonal computers… in-stead, you have access tothe software applicationthrough a web browser.This is a great option forsmall contractors whomay not necessarily havethe IT infrastructure orresources in place to runsoftware on-premise,plus it eliminates the
large upfront cost. Be-cause payments aremade month by month,contractors immediatelyget access to a featurerich program that mayhave been out of theirreach. Also, the softwarevendor takes care ofbackups and updateswhich ups the conven-ience factor. Overall,SaaS is a viable option formany types and sizes ofcontractors.
So, Tina, it really de-pends on your company.Consider the hardwareyour company has inplace now. Would it ac-commodate an on-prem-ise system, or would itneed to be upgraded? Do
you feel more comfortabledoing your own backups,updates and IT mainte-nance, or would yourather have someone elsetake care of it? These arejust a couple of questionsto ask yourself when de-termining which deploy-ment method would workfor you. Good luck!

MT. VERNON, IOWA —The Tilt-Up Concrete As-sociation — an interna-tional nonprofit organiza-tion that serves to expandand improve the use ofTilt-Up as the preferredbuilding system — hasannounced the release ofa revised guideline onTemporary Wind Bracingof Tilt-Up Concrete Pan-els During Construction.
According to Jim Baty,technical director of theTCA, the guideline is in-tended to provide a stan-dardized method for thedesign and erection of atemporary bracing sys-tem for use during con-struction of a Tilt-Upstructure. The currentOSHA requirement re-quires that Tilt-Up con-crete panels be temporar-ily braced to prevent pan-els from overturning orcollapsing during theconstruction of a Tilt-Upstructure. Since OSHAdoes not specify how toprevent Tilt-Up wall pan-els from overturning orcollapsing, the TCA devel-oped a temporary bracingguideline for use by theconstruction industry.
“The 2012 edition of theTCA Wind Bracing Guide-lines is a combination oftechnological progress inthis industry and reas-surance for the perform-ance of these systems,”said Baty.
Baty noted that the in-dustry was challengedwhen ASCE 37 identifiedit would change to adoptASCE 7 pressures as itestablished the concernthat bracing schemesmay be under designedfor the resulting windconditions. However, henoted, TCA’s engineeringexperts have been able toconfirm that Tilt-Upbracing systems are suffi-ciently designed with to-day’s standards.
“This confirmation per-mitted us to move for-ward with recommenda-tions for response designrecommendations on slabthickness and integratinghelical ground anchorsystems to this more ro-bust version,” he said.
The original TCA Brac-ing Guidelines, publishedin September 1994, sug-gested a temporary brac-ing design based on a min-imum uniform lateral
wind pressure of 10 psf.,applied over the entirepanel area. This wasbased on a 40 year historyof bracing panels thatwere for the most part,shorter than 30-feet tall.TCA revised the documentin 1998 to incorporate theanalytical procedures con-tained in ASCE Standard7-95, Minimum DesignLoads For Buildings AndOther Structures. ThisASCE standard forms thebasis for calculation ofwind forces used in the de-sign of wind force resistingsystems in completedstructures. The wind loadprovisions of section 6.0,ASCE 7-95 were followedin the design of temporarybracing for Tilt-Up panelsduring construction.
The application ofASCE 7-95 resulted in anapplied lateral wind pres-sure that varies over andincreases with the heightof the panels. The 1998guideline used a con-struction period windspeed of 70 mph as aminimum in the design oftemporary bracing. Thiswas based on a basicwind speed of 90 mph,with a fifty year mean re-currence interval andmultiplying it by 0.78 toconvert it to a construc-tion period wind speed of70 mph with a five yearmean recurrence interval.This method also incor-porated the three secondgust speeds reported bythe national weatherservice and other weatherinformation services.
In 2005, TCA revisedits 1998 wind bracingguide to incorporate theprovisions of SEI/ASCE37-02, Design Loads OnStructures During Con-struction. The SEI/ASCE37-02 standard incorpo-rates the design windload requirements of theASCE 7-95 standard, us-ing a basic wind speed of90 mph. For constructionperiods up to one year,the SEI/ASCE 37-02standard specifies theuse of an adjustment fac-tor of 0.8 to be applied tothe basic 90 mph windspeed. This adjustmentresults in a 72 mph con-struction period designwind speed, which is thewind speed recommend-ed for design of the tem-porary bracing system.
The 2012 edition con-tinues to base its designloadings on SEI/ASCE37-02, however, the windloadings are now basedon ASCE 7-10 provisions.ASCE 37-02 will adoptthe ASCE 7-10 wind pro-visions in the next revi-sion to the publication. Inaddition, it is very likelythat many, if not all localbuilding codes, will en-dorse ASCE 7-10 in thenear future. As such, theTCA decided to endorse
ASCE 7-10 as the stan-dard for temporary brac-ing of Tilt panels duringconstruction.
The major changes towind load provision ofASCE 7-10 include:
• Introduction of newwind speed maps to beused with a 1.0 load fac-tor for LRFD design;
• A 0.6 load reductionfactor for ASD design; and
• Re-introduction of Ex-posure D in hurricaneprone regions
