Welcome to the Communities for Children (CfC) Playford Newsletter, September 2015 edition! A big shout out to all of the Dad’s, Grandad’s and the other significant men who play
important roles in children’s lives – “HAPPY FATHER’S DAY” to you all for Sunday
the 6th September.
In the Communities for Children office – located at the AnglicareSA Elizabeth Mission
site we have been busy, putting in place new activities based on what you have been
telling us is needed in the community; we’ve run and coordinated the July school holiday
activities; put on different training opportunities that
included the Senior First Aid training; held our
annual State CfC Art Display event and are
planning the next lot of school holiday activities
and events. A highlight for this month that we are
very proud of within our team is the recent
AnglicareSA award won for the work we are doing
in the category of “Building a better future with
Australia’s First Peoples through Reconciliation
award”, the team were very proud and honoured to
receive this
award. At the awards function after the CfC Playford team received an award for the work we are

Fella’s and Kids Activities The Fella’s and Kids Activities Rock at CfC Playford! Last month our team in partnership with Centacare – CfC Dad’s Business activity took Children and their Dad’s to Vertical Reality, where children and their significant males in their lives e.g. Dad’, Grandpa’s, Uncle’s took their relationships to new heights. 11 Dad’s, 1 Grandad, and 17 children supported each other to overcome fears, take on the challenges and make some memorable moments. Technology the business of bonding – when we think of IT we often think of a solitary activity not
so for a group of 50 dads and their children who attended the recently opened – Game Room Essentials in the Craigmore Village Shopping centre a great retro experience. These events have provided a great ongoing support network for Dad’s and their
children. Please watch this space for more Fella’s and Kids activities

Star Bear program is a grief support program for children and young people who have lost a parent/carer, sibling or other immediate family member. The program has been running in South Australia since 1999 and a part of AnglicareSA since 2004. Each year three weekend camps are held; two camps for younger children aged 5-12 years "Star Bear", and one for teenage children aged 13-17 years “Star Bound”. Before each camp there is get together attended by the children, their parents, staff and volunteers. The “pre-camp” session gives the children a chance to meet one another and their mentor to help reduce any anxiety about attending camp. The camps run from Friday night to Sunday afternoon at set camp sites in the Adelaide Hills. The children are collected from a central location and driven to camp on the Friday evening. The camps include art therapy, group sessions, outdoor adventure activities, team building exercises and remembrance ceremonies. On the final day families and carers join the children for lunch and then a ceremony to remember the person they have lost. The next Star Bear camp is October 23-25, 2015. If you know a child between 5-12 who has lost a parent/carer,
sibling or other immediate family member please contact the Star Bear program on 8301 4208.

Water. The Original Cool Drink
OPAL in the City of Playford is proud to be launching its final campaign message
‘Water. The Original Cool Drink’.
Cool fresh water used to be a favourite drink for kids, but now there’s so much choice in drinks and many of those choices are sweetened drinks, containing large amounts of sugar. This campaign encourages children, young people and families
to choose water instead of other sweetened drinks.
Our bodies are made up of 50-60% water and for their bodies and brains to work well children and young people need water. It can come from the food they eat, like fruit and vegetables and from milk.
Soft drinks, fruit drinks, cordial, flavoured mineral waters, sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit juice all contain water, but they also contain sugar and sometimes caffeine, so they are not good for children to have every day. These drinks may
also cause tooth decay, so the aim of the campaign is to encourage families to limit sweet drinks and for children to have plain tap water instead. Tap water is also good for your kids’ teeth as in South Australia it has added fluoride that helps to
prevent tooth decay.
What else could kids drink?
Milk Breastmilk is the best way to feed babies until they are at least 12 months old, with other foods introduced from 6 months.
Small amounts of cooled boiled water can supplement breastmilk from around 6 months. From 12 months of age, offer full cream plain milk and above 2 years swap to reduced fat milk. Encourage plain, reduced
fat milk for children and teenagers as it provides the calcium needed for healthy bones and teeth.
Juice Fruit juice is not necessary or recommended for infants. Limit fruit juice to occasionally and in very small amounts for older children as it is acidic and can increase the risk of dental erosion. Fruit juice also has less fibre and other healthy nutrients
than the whole fruit provides.
Drink water not sugar
Compare these common drink choices to see how many teaspoons of sugar they have.
Which one will you choose?
For more information visit www.playford.sa.gov.au/water.

Barrier games are a fun way to develop many skills including: listening skills, oral language, social language, clear talking, understanding and using concepts. They are great for extending the amount of information your child can understand or use in a sentence and you can play them easily using things around the house. Barrier games require a listener and a speaker, two identical sets of materials and a barrier such as a large book. You can use printable barrier games or objects from around the house. Materials can include blocks, Lego, miniature objects, animals and figures, sticker sets, felt boards, picture cards, coloured pencils and paper, real objects, maths or craft materials, pictures from clip art or catalogues. You can download printable barrier games from the Talking Matters website at http://www.talkingmatters.com.au/information/downloads Playing your barrier games: 1. Each player has one background sheet and one set of small pictures or items. Sit facing each other. Lay out a set of items or pictures in front of each player. Check that the child knows the names of all the small items or pictures. 2. Explain to your child you are going to play a game to see that you are good listeners and talkers. Explain that you will make a picture and you want your child to make their picture look the same as yours. Stand up the barrier and explain that this is so that the child cannot see what you are doing and needs to listen carefully. 3. Place your small pictures on the background and give the child clear instructions about how to put their pictures in the same position. Make sure you give your child enough time to respond before giving the next instruction. 4. When you have placed all the pictures on the background take the barrier away and see if the pictures look the same. Talk to your child about the pictures that are placed correctly. Explain that this means they have listened carefully. Fix any pictures that are not placed correctly.
5. Play the game again and this time, tell your child that it is their turn to talk. Explain that you will listen carefully and make your pictures look the same as theirs. Put the barrier up again and ask the child to tell you where to put the pictures. If your child’s instructions are not clear, you may need to cue them such as if your child says “put the car there” you might say “I've got the car, but I'm not sure where to put it”. 6. Take the barrier away, look at all the pictures that correct and tell your child how this means that they did a good job of talking and that you listened carefully. Talk about any pictures that are in the incorrect position. Model the correct instruction such as “oh, I needed to put the cat under the tree”. Once your child understands how to play barrier games, you can make your own games. You can gradually games more difficult by increasing the length and complexity of the instructions or the number of items. Here are some other ways you can use barrier games to help your child learn.
P A G E 1 3 F A M I L Y I N F O - T A L K I N G M A T T E R S
Funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services
Here are five ways that you can use barrier games to develop communication skills: 1. Listening and auditory memory. Begin with an instruction that your child can follow easily and gradually increase the length of the instructions. Begin with a simple barrier game and give your child some instructions with two key words such as “put the dog in the car“. If your child can do this repeat five similar two word instructions and note how many they get exactly right without any help. If four or five of five turns are correct try three key words “put the cat and the dog in the car“. If these are mostly correct try four “put the cat in the truck and the dog in the car“. Work at a level where your child is getting some correct, but not all, say two or three out of five. Next add some concept or describing words and keep counting key words until you find the level to work at. 2. Extending sentence length. To extend your child’s sentence length you can work through the number of key words your child can do as above but get your child to tell you what to do with the pictures. So first ask them where to put one picture, then two and so on. Practice at a level where your child needs a little help but not too much and gradually add an extra word as they get more skilled and confident. If your child finds it hard to form the sentences taking turns can help. Try ‘I’ll tell you then you tell me’ because you can model for your child how to make the sentences. If your child has a go but makes some mistakes model say their sentence back to them the right way but be encouraging and positive. 3. Developing vocabulary. Barrier games are great for practicing vocabulary. For younger children begin with games where they know most of the words and add a few new ones. Start with your child listening and then work to them using the words to tell you what to do. Barrier games are also great for familiarising children with new words for themes at pre-school or school. If your child is going to be learning about dinosaurs or Africa or insects why not make a barrier game and use this to practice the vocabulary your child will be needing to understand and use. You will be able to find the pictures you need on google images. 4. Developing understanding and use of concepts. Once your child knows how to do barrier games, can follow simple instructions and form simple sentences, you can begin to add some concepts such as size, colour and position words to your games. Remember to keep in mind how many key words your child can understand and that the concept words count too. Put the big pig in the truck would be three key words. Put the big pig under the truck would be four, because you need to pay attention to the position word as well. 5. Developing descriptive language. As your child’s skills develop you can use barrier games to develop descriptive language. One fun and easy way to do this is to make a rule that you cannot say the names of the pictures, so to “put the dog on the boat” you might have to say “put the brown animal that barks on the blue vehicle that goes in the water”. Another way to really challenge older children is to use three dimensional materials such as blocks or objects such as plastic animals, figurines or vehicles. This requires much more careful description to place the items in the correct spots. You can begin by placing items such as plastic animals onto a background sheet that you can draw or print, then move to using other objects such as trees, fences or blocks to form the background instead of the sheet. Drawing is also challenging. You might start with a printed background to help with positioning then move to a blank page as your child becomes more skilled. If you don’t have two sets of something, build something then take a photo on your phone or iPad, mix up the objects, describe from the photo and see if they match.
The Talking Matters blog has more ideas about using barrier games http://blog.talkingmatters.com.au/more-barrier-games/ as well as lots of other fun ideas to help kids learn.
