Tradition Food & Costume
Halloween costumes
are traditionally those of
monsters such as ghosts,
skeletons, witches, and
devils.
Costumes are also based
on themes other than
traditional horror, such as
those of characters from
television shows, movies and
other pop culture icons.
FOODSFOODS Because the holiday comes
in the wake of the annual apple
harvest, candy apples are a
common Halloween treat made
by rolling whole apples in a sticky
sugar syrup ( 糖浆 ; 糖汁 ), and
sometimes rolling them in nuts.
Candy apples were commonly
given to children.

Trick or Treat Trick-or-treat is for children
on or around Halloween in which
they proceed from house to house
in costumes, asking for treats such
as confectionery( 甜食 , 糖果糕点 )
with the question, "Trick or treat?"
The "trick" part of "trick or
treat" is an idle threat to play a
trick on the homeowners or their
property if no treat is given.

Jack-o'-lantern
A jack-o'-lantern (sometimes also spelled Jack O'Lantern) is typically a carved pumpkin.
The origin of Jack-o’-Lantern
The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folk (传说) . A man named Jack, he was notorious (臭名昭著) because he likes drinking and tricking (骗人) . One day he tricked Satan into climbing a tree, then he carved a cross on the trunk, not to let the devil (魔鬼) down the tree. Then Jack made a deal with the devil, if he would never tempt(诱惑) him again, he would promise the devil down the tree.
The origin of Jack-o’-Lantern
After Jack died, he wasn’t let to go into Heaven because of his evil (罪
恶) ways, but he was also denied going into Hell (地狱) because he had tricked the devil. But the devil gave him a single ember (燃烧未尽的煤块) to light his way in the dark. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out (挖空的) turnip (萝卜) to keep it glowing (发光) longer. Jack was still walking with the lantern looking for a place to stay.

Halloween Games – Bobbing for Apples
You can't have a Halloween party without playing this classic
game! It's easy --- all you have to do is float apples in a large tub
filled with warm water. The object of the game is to grab an apple
in your mouth without using your hands.
The tradition of bobbing for apples came from the celebration
of Roman festivals. There was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman
goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple. This
Roman festival was incorporated ( 把…合并 , 使并入 ) into the Celtic
( 凯尔特人 ) celebration of Samhain when Rome invaded the Celts.
Bobbing for apples that is practiced today on Halloween comes
from these ancient practices.
