CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condi t ion statement of weekly report ing member banks i n l eading c i t i e s

shows the fo l l owing p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended August 9: Decreases of

$449 m i l l i o n i n loans adjusted, $4?0 m i l l i o n i n holdings of Treasury b i l l s , $383 mi l -

l i o n in demand d e p o s i t s adjusted, and $1,007 m i l l i o n in U. S• Government demand depos i t s ,

and an increase of $134 m i l l i o n i n time and savings d e p o s i t s .

Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans decreased a net of $140 m i l l i o n , as compared

with a net decrease of $36 m i l l i o n during the s imi lar week a year ago. Loans t o

brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing or carrying U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s decreased

$186 m i l l i o n , and t h e i r loans f o r purchasing or carrying other s e c u r i t i e s decreased

$55 m i l l i o n . Loans t o s a l e s f inance , personal f inance , i n s t i t u t i o n s , e t c . decreased

$55 m i l l i o n . "Other" loans decreased $42 m i l l i o n .

Demand d e p o s i t s adjusted decreased $248 m i l l i o n i n New York City and $93

m i l l i o n in the Da l la s D i s t r i c t . U. S. Government demand d e p o s i t s decreased in a l l

d i s t r i c t s .

Borrowings of weekly report ing member banks from Federal Reserve Banks

increased $277 m i l l i o n and borrowings from others decreased $275 m i l l i o n . Loans t o

domestic commercial banks decreased $395 m i l l i o n .
