Thoughts On The Past Year
W ell it’s mid January and snow is on the ground. We are iced-in
and find ourselves wanting the weather to change and spring to come so we can at least attempt to get the trike out of the garage and get it ready for the summer riding season.
This will be our last newsletter as Dave & Dianne Smith will be sworn in at the February meeting as Chapter I’s new Chapter Directors. We feel that the chapter will be in good hands and eve-ryone will be happy with the plans they have for the upcoming year. We would like to thank all the members that have stepped up to help out.
We plan on attending as many meet-ings and functions as we can, however, we have a lot of trips planned that we have been putting off. We will ride to Miami to see the kids, ride to West Virginia so Janet can see her relatives, ride to Washington DC for Rolling Thunder since this will be the last one they have, and other places that we have been wanting to go but have not had the time.
We want Chapter I members to know it was a pleasure to serve as their Chapter Directors for six years. You members worked very hard to earn money for the chapter during the year and we believed that you should bene-fit from all the hard work. That is why we made sure we had quite a few func-tions during the year so you could en-joy yourselves and know that all the hard work was worth it.
Happy Valentines Day to all of you.

W inter seems to be in full swing. The temps have been
rockin’ and rollin’ up and down. One day the sun is shining and the next the snow is flying. As they say, that’s NC and if you wait a little while the weather will change.
Despite the fact that Humpty Dumpty is spending a lot of time sleeping in the man cave things are still moving forward for NC-I.
Your future staff held a strategic planning session recently and there is an excitement in the air for the upcoming riding season. Several changes are set to take place and I am sure that everyone will see a new face this coming year.
The major change that you will no-tice immediately is that we are changing the location of our
monthly meetings. Beginning on March 23, 2019 NC-I will be hav-ing our monthly meeting at the Country Pride Restaurant, 153 Wig-gins Rd, Candler NC, (TA truck stop, I-40 exit 37). We will continue to meet the 4th Saturday of the month. Our meeting time will be eat at 9 and meet at 10.
We are going to change the way ice cream runs take place. Our Happy Trails Coordinator, George Moxley, will be scheduling ice cream runs on a random basis. In other words instead of going to ice cream on the third Sunday of each month we will now be going on different days of the week, Monday-Thursday, and different weeks of the month. They will be scheduled rides where we will meet at a location and then ride as a group somewhere for ice cream. Watch your newsletter for these important dates.
Some things are not going to be changing. Assistant Chapter Direc-tor Johnny Johnson will still be do-ing his adventure rides.
Johnny has been working hard on the men’s ride for this coming year. Details are still being hammered out, however the dates are cast in stone. The ride this year will be
May 16-19. Guys mark these dates on your calendar as you will not want to miss this fun filled ride. As soon as you know you are going contact Johnny and get your name on the list.
Dianne and I are looking forward to putting on many miles and smiles with our NC-I family in 2019.

Important Stuff
I am your new Care Bear. I will be sending birthday, anniver-
sary, and get well cards for the chapter. Please let me know at [email protected] if I make any mistakes on the dates or ad-dresses.
Also, please keep me informed if you hear about any illnesses or sur-geries so I can send a card to show our (the chapter's) concern. BTW: I will be discreet. Unless you tell me to, I will not share this infor-mation.
PS: Rob remembered this picture of me taken during an Oregon va-cation in 2009 and thought it seemed appropriate.

A s we all get ready for the
riding season we need to hone our rid-ing skills. For most of us riding our mo-torcycles has become second nature and we are confident in our ability. Unfortunately, that is when the sim-ple mistakes tend to creep up on us. One of the easy to neglect ride techniques is lane position.
Since our motorcy-cles are so much smaller than cars we generally have 3 lanes or tracks to choose from within our travel lane. The left track (LT), center track (CT), and right track (RT). All 3 positions have advantages and disadvantages.
LT provides the best field of view to see what is happening ahead and behind. It’s also easier to be seen by other motorists. The driver in front has a good chance of seeing you in the side view mirror. This position can create a blocking for would be passing vehicles as well.
However on the down side, it puts you closer to oncoming traffic. I’m sure you’ve seen lots of vehicles crossing the center line.
CT offers a buffer left and right. For drivers that only use the rear view mirror CT gives you the best chance for being seen by the driver in front of you. A bright headlight shining in the rearview mirror is very noticeable. But, CT can be hazardous at the start of a rain as that’s when the oils on the road-way begin to float on the surface and become the slickest. This
would also increase stopping distances. CT is the dirtiest lane and is often a good way to get a nail or screw in that expensive tire. Road markings, man hole covers, etc all live in CT.
RT puts you the fur-thest away from passing vehicles. RT on multi lane roads may keep you from being in the blind spot of a motorist to
your right. However, RT is the spot the motorist in front of you is less likely to see you. Anybody know someone who never uses the side view mirrors?
Unfortunately, motorcycles are almost invisible to motorist at times and we all need to ride as if we are not seen. It seems there’s really not a simple answer to the best lane position. We need to pick the one that feels the safest and ride defensively.
