(U) GTIIDE TO HISTORICA,L CRYPTOIOGIC ACROI\TYMS ANDABBREVIATIONS, r94o- 198o
I. (tD Introduction
(U) The purpose of this working aid is to assist personnel in identifiing acronyrns, abbreviations, specialmarkings, and certain covernames which may be found in historical cryptologic-related records such as memo-randa, messages, reports, shrdies, and plans. Many of these orpressions were second nafirre to the originators anddrafters of the material, and often they would not include their erpansion in the texts, even on the first occumence. With the decreasing number of personnel performing records management, archives, history, and declassificationfunctions who lack furect experience in cryptologic events prior to r97o, it is increasingly necessary to providethem such workings aids as this glossary
(U/FOUO) With the publication of Executive Order P958, mandating a dmlassification review of all classi-fied records twenty-five years or older, the number of personnel and conbactors involved in the processing ofcryptologic remrds has grown dramatieally over the last several yearc. The audience for this publication includes, but is not limited to, personnel performing the following activities or assigned to concerned workcenters: declas-sification services, records management, archives selices, history, policy, public affairs,Iegislative affairs, theOffice of the C'eneral Counsel, Freedom of Information Act, and Operations and tnformation AssuranceDircctorates rvho neview relevant material in support of all the previously listed activities.
(U/Fgge) ftis glossary can also be of use to researchers from federal departments, agencies, and commis-sions with the appropriate clearances. Within NSA this glossary can support candidates for the MSSI program, professionalization, managerial, Ieadership, intern, and military cryptologic skills development programs.
{€ffsr}This glossary contains the following types of terms: acronyms, abbreviations, general equipment des-ignator-series (mostly COMSEC), organizational designators, general descriptions of SIGINT activity designatorseries, and some relevant covernames. These terms cover all aspects of the cryptologic and information securityprooesses- Most of the terms included in this glossary are cryrptologic, although a large number of terms relatingto the intelligence and defense communities, which often occur in the cryrptologic context, are included as well.
{€#sl}The time span for this glossary eneompasses the period from World War II to the early l98os. Thereis some overlap in that a number of terms which originated earlier, such as during World War I, werc still in use,or being referenced, during the 1940s and 195Os. Some of the terms in this glossary continued to be used well intocontemporary times. Also, many abbreviations and acronyms developed alternate meanings which would beaccepted by the cryptologic community. These alternate meanings have been included. In many cases, it is not amatter of "correstness" as it is one of appropriateness or cuntext.

o(U//FOUO) Despite the number of sources and knowledgeable people who checked the accuracy of the abbrevia- :tions and acronyms in this guide, it is inevitable that additional entries and corrections to the curtent listine will ttoccur. This is an integral part ofthe historiographic process. All readers ane encouraged to send such "hans-e, aand additions to the Center for Crlptologic History, National Security Agency, Fort George G. Meade, MD, Suite O6886. o
