Early Concept Design is a crucial early step for GSA project review

Level 1
Example Early Concept Design
Model defined as :
•set of 3D space objects, carefully named
• composed on slabs – also used for roof
•exterior walls with no construction, percent glazing, with R-values, degree self-shading
Easily defined in all BIM design tools

Project Purpose
Revit Model
Bentley Model
ArchiCad Model
Digital Project Model
common IFC file format
space program review
simple energy load analysis
circulation & security review
cost estimateprovide significant automated
feedback for early stage concept design
GSA Automation of Court Design Guide5
propose to use Energy+ with defaults. Would expect that defaults could be adjusted by energy consultant for later stages of design

Energy Usage Analysis Module
ADDITIONAL INPUT DATA TO BE INCLUDED IN THE BIM
-Building North Axis
-Solar Distribution
-Location (City & State)
-Exterior Walls
-Material
-R-value
-Fenestration
-% of windows on each wall
- ratio of width to length
-Frame & mullion information
-Material
-Floors underground (or partially underground)

Energy Usage Analysis Module
2 ENERGY ANALYSIS SCENARIOS IN EARLY CONCEPT DESIGN:
-1 ZONE
- Building modeled as a single thermal zone
-2 ZONE
-Atrium or 2-story Lobby space
-Will require different default for schedule and set point temperature
- Other spaces in the building as a single zone

Mechanical Systems Narrative
GSA Automation of Court Design Guide9
Purposes of Building Shell Energy Analysis
Siting, orientation and relative shading by different sources, effect of below grade parts of bldg.Building shape and exposure of building surfaces
Shading devices on exterior – if defined
Significance of insulation of annual energy costs
Building mass – use in energy capture and dissipation
Building floor area to external skin area ratio
Provide relative energy usage comparison for assessing different design concepts
Significance of atriums, courtyards, other architectural features on energy use
Natural lighting determined by depth of spaces

Building Shell Energy Analysis
We plan to replicate this report using Energy-Plus, with interface to the model. Will allow default parameter management by experienced E+ users.
Using an efficiency factor, should just turn these figures into energy usage/yr.
GSA Automation of Court Design Guide11
Mechanical Systems Analysis
Not sure what calculations to do about mechanical system performance. we propose to default these factors, except in
exceptional projects

FOR EACH ALTERNATIVE LAYOUT, IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENCES IN ENERGY REQUIREMENTS
Provide separate energy analysis for each orientation on site.
